Adriano Bulla (adriano_bulla) | 10 comments Tales for the Free Mind and Open Heart

Is available free on Smashwords (but it costs on Amazon, though I'm trying to get it free there too).

It is a collection of three stories that were previously published in several magazines (there's a list in the acknowledgement a).

They are very dense short stories, dealing with sexuality and religion.

They are all based on either minor characters or episodes of The Road to London.

Each story also has it's own literary style.

Three stories, three insights into different worlds, into the minds and hearts of those some of us find 'different'.

Three perspectives on sexuality and religion for those who do not wish to conform, but wish to explore and embrace.

Three tales of love in three different ways: the love of knowledge, the love that, at least here, dare not speak its name, the love that knows no numbers and no boundaries.

Three glimpses at what's wrong, and what could be right: a cry against the misuse of religion, distorted by society and bigotry into discrimination, instead of being free to be what, well, the author thinks, it should really mean: the path towards acceptance and unconditional love.

Each story is based on Bulla's novel The Road to London, but looks at the hearts and minds of minor characters, at key episodes from a different perspective, or at what could have happened in a different dimension or world.

The Tree of Knowledge is an esoteric stream of consciousness: a Latin Teacher's thoughts as he identifies with the serpent tempting Eve in Eden during a lesson and finds in one of his students the reflection of Jesus, while he remembers a gay night of passion: he will regale the student (who is the Boy, the protagonist of The Road to London with an epiphany that will change his life.

The Housekeeper's Innocence is based on an episode which happens in The Road to London: the Priest's Housekeeper burns during mass and turns into a strange cockroach like animal in front of the congregation. In the short story, we find the past of this woman. On leaving Mass one day, after a Latin reading on Mary Magdalene, which she could not understand, when still a young woman, she is raped by a river by a man in a dark coat. She then decides to become a nun, but the day before taking the orders, another nun visits her and shows her in The Bible she can find the truth about her sexuality, and has sex with the nun. She then becomes the Housekeeper to a Priest, but when the man in the cloak appears among the congregation, she burns the church to the ground.

Stained Glass slips freely between prose and poetry and it is the celebration of the polygamous wedding of four men. each walks towards the altar thinking about the moment when he came to meet the other three.

Excerpt from Unchained Melody

‘Black lace…’ he cranked his own personal volume dial up. ‘On sweat…’
Behind him Nick lost his shit on the drums in the very best way and that energetic response to Hunter’s vocal prompts spurred him on more. He launched into the bridge, feeling that feeling sweep over him- the pure joy of getting the notes right, of everything coming together, drums, guitars, amps, bass… and then voice. His voice. Rising above them all, hitting the spots in the back of the room that drums couldn’t go. He thought of the lyrics, of the poisonous girl, the forbidden temptress and there was Callie sobbing on his bedroom floor, her bare midriff clashing with her devastated tears. He shouldn’t have touched her but he did. There was Callie, sliding into the pool in that red bikini with her tits pressed together and the tone in her stomach forcing his eyes to follow down to where he knew heaven waited between her thighs. He shouldn’t have touched her that night but he did.
He was always going to touch her and probably at the worst possible times and she could have stopped it by staying away but she didn’t. Yes she was poison, but she had the antidote to it between her ripe little thighs and Hunter had been too much of a pussy to pin her against him and take everything she had to offer. And now, fuck now she was probably somewhere with Ryan-
And then he felt her. Mid-way through the chorus Hunter looked up and there was Callie, shoving her way through the crowd like the crazed fan she’d been at The Silverchair concert in Ninety-Seven, rather than the delicate ballerina she’d become since. She was sex on legs, wearing the tightest, shortest black leather mini skirt he had ever seen, which clung to her ass, and a black top which draped from her neck, parted at the rise of her breasts and then puddled near her upper ribs showing the taut bronzed flesh of her chest and the inner curves of her champagne-cup breasts. She turned and beckoned hurriedly to someone, and Hunter almost got hard then and there to see that aside from the tiniest strings of black elastic slanting across her back, her skin there was bare and bronze and taut too. And just to make her that much more perfect-she had black Dunlop Volleys on her feet. Not heels, not boots, not trying too hard but just enough like she’d been going for glamorous but before she could complete the look, a good song had come on the radio and she’d totally forgotten that she was dressing to impress. The curve of her ankle bone was the sexiest thing Hunter had ever seen, and he loved the way she’d taken to wearing her black hair out and straight. Not iron straight like all the girls were suddenly doing, getting around with weird heat creases at their parts and going off their nuts when a guy dared touch the hair they’d spent hours to make it look like they’d done nothing to. No Callie’s black hair fell thickly and freely and ever so slightly rumpled. It was the hair of a girl who wanted something to hide behind. The hair of a girl who intended on breaking her neck to the next good beat that came along.
The hair of a girl who didn’t care if someone stroked it. Hair that wanted to be pulled. Hair that wanted to be worked into a wild fury against his sheets if not his carpet and then the shower door. A sandstorm of need ripped through Hunter. He sang louder, hotter, rougher. He focused on Callie, not deigning to give Ryan the slightest nod of acknowledgment for fear he’d smile a: ‘Fuck you the mic’s mine!’ smile and render himself a try-hard dork.
Callie looked back, her eyes widening in surprise as though she’d only just realised that there was music playing and that Hunter was the one making it happen. Then she looked around her, somewhat dazed and her gaze led Hunter to see that Callie was not the only one noticing him. The bar had been a flurry of activity but now people were stepping away, exchanging grins and nodding towards the stage; towards him.

Free from the 13th-17th

Edward, the king's champion, has just knocked off a legendary dragon, a fine end to a fine career. Now it's time for the knight to journey home, be a hero to his people, and marry a chaste lady of the court. Only one thing stands in his way—a hairy, half-naked barbarian named Gvundjar. Gvundjar thinks he's found a friend in “Eddie” and does his best to help the knight find his way back home. But it's always one step forward and ten thousands steps back, and what should be a simple journey turns into a comical ordeal.

"Planes, Trains & Automobiles" PLUS "One Foot in the Grave" TIMES the classic fantasy genre EQUALS "A Barbarian for Dinner."

About the Author

Mike Mayer has published short stories in The Tenth Dimension and Biomednet's HMS Beagle, and gaming articles in Dragon Magazine and Pyramid. His story Boundary Line won JA Konrath's "Rusty Nail" short story contest. He doesn't much like writing about himself in the third person, but he's locked into it now and can't seem to stop. Maybe, in the future, he'll revisit this bio and adopt a different point of view.

The only thing that’s kept me from being a nobody is my red hair, but most people still get my name wrong or call me: ‘Matchstick,’ instead. You know… skinny body, big red head? I’d like to write my peers off as idiots but unfortunately, I owe a teacher for that one!
Being invisible sucks. So to get some attention, I punched my boyfriend for dumping me for my best friend in the middle of math class, broke the school captain’s leg and threw myself at the delicious new guy… right in front of the queen b-cup bi-artch Sonia, who wants Saxon too. I was shameless. Trampy… and now I’m bad news with no school spirit.
...Apparently. They call it: ‘Gossip’ and not ‘The News’ for a reason!
I swear that I only did most of that stuff. I think. I don’t know… I was pretty mad so it’s hard to remember... and Saxon Clarke is so pretty that I could cry!
Well, I’m not invisible anymore. And if that American PE teacher thinks that handing me a pair of Pom Poms is going to set me straight... then she’s onto something.
It’s time for this Matchstick to light up.
Just don’t tell anyone I said that… this is high school after all, and liking yourself or hoping for anything is just asking for it...

Alec (acutter) | 1 comments New eBook: Emancipate My Life has a FREE promotion starting Monday, August 25 until Friday, August 29.

Book Link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MY49O70

In the year 2014, it is a very sad and humbling realization that we as a human family have struggled to create a world where good-heartedness and humility are the true underlying intentions of our actions, and the consequences of this reality are becoming more and more evident. Amidst such material and technological advancements in our physical world, we have simply failed to develop and educate at the same rate, on a global level, the most important qualities of our inner being - neglecting the cultivation of our most genuine and inherent humanistic elements that with them come the understanding of what it means to be good-hearted, holistic, and happy human beings.

Alec Cutter's Emancipate My Life is therefore a "humble offering to our human family" that delves to the core what it means to live a life of genuine happiness and carries with it the underlying aspiration of cultivating a future comprised of peace and good-heartedness deriving from his universal message of humanistic values and basic human goodness. Values such as compassion, humility, kindness, patience, etc., he argues are inherent to every single individual on earth and are the most essential elements of our interconnected human family. Through an unwavering positive outlook, Cutter puts forward this uplifting message with simplicity and universality; making his emphasis upon these values applicable to quite literally every sentient being on earth and thus allowing a brighter future seem like a genuine possibility. Through the cultivation of these inherently beautiful humanistic values, Cutter describes how these elements permit each and every individual to live his or her life beautifully and purposefully, allowing genuine happiness to become a true reality in ones life while at the same time becoming an integral piece of a more peaceful and good-hearted human family.

If you enjoy the book, a good review would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

I WAS lazing on the golden sands on the south-west coast of Thailand, the blazing sun beating down on my body. The view as I gazed out over the vast expanse of the Andaman sea was breath-taking. The subtle, salty scent of the sea engrossed me; the serenity of the still blue waters only broken by the sound of the waves lapping against the rocks.
I reached for my bag, searched for my book and was about to begin the latest Conrad Jones crime- thriller, when my eyes met those of a struggling hawker. She was well covered up and wore an old, straw hat over a tired, bronzed face.
A sharp pang of sympathy rattled inside of me. I didn’t have the heart to wave her away and found myself pointing to some fruit that I didn’t really want. I dug deep for some change, paid and smiled as she handed me some sliced melon in a bag with a pointed stick. She thanked me, gathered up her wares then strolled off on her way down the beach.
I returned to my book and was surfing through the pages when it suddenly felt hot. Can we turn it down to tropical? A bead of sweat rolled down my nose, stopped then dropped onto a page. I wiped it away, squinted up at the sun and strained my eyes. A rank stench in the air then aroused my attention and looking around I couldn’t tell what that was or where it was coming from.
My parched throat and desert-dried lips cried out for water. I scrambled in the sand for my bottle, but couldn’t find it. I stretched down for my things - my bag was gone and so were the melon and my book. I lay back for a moment when the back of my head brushed up against somebody’s feet. I turned to apologize, but couldn’t be more shocked; the beach was now packed. So many dirty, stinky, bodies, lying crammed together within so little space.
I covered my ears as a cacophony erupted in a language I didn’t understand. Then the stench struck again. It was stronger than before and this time I recognized it. It smelt like human waste mixed with stale sweat, repulsive body odour and cheap cigarettes. I glanced around to see who was smoking; everybody was.
Something smooth and oily ran under my right hand. It felt like a cockroach, it was a cockroach. I shuffled back and watched it scuttling off. I thought it was gone, but then another appeared and then more. I brushed them away and what was once golden sand was now a dark, hard, filthy floor. My body started to tremble - my nerves were on edge.
I glanced up at the sky but all I could see now, was thick black smoke. I coughed uncontrollably until the smog finally cleared and several stained panels emerged with flickering strip lights. It was as if the sky had transformed into a ceiling of a filthy, neglected cell, crammed completely to capacity.
Trauma and terror possessed me as I realized I had to face this reality and deal with the torment all over again. My mind had been playing tricks on me, creating a mirage of a beach, a mirage of freedom. I was in the worst-place-in-the-world. I was in a Thai prison. I was in Hell.

Pretty Girl by Amy Heugh

If there were one day that she could change it would be the day she was taken.

After her parents’ divorce, seventeen-year-old Izzy Scott and her mother move to the old town of St. Augustine to begin a new life, a life beyond the media attention and the memories of the traumatic experiences that left an everlasting affect on their family.

The former ballerina is trying to adjust to the outside world without suffering a panic attack and exposing who she is - all while getting through her senior year at a new school. That’s easy to say until she meets local boy Mason Winchester, a boy with a tragic past.

Mason has a reputation for violence, but a love for motorcycles. At the age of eleven he lost his mother to cancer and from then he has been running from something, but could never really get away.

Like any other angry teenager, he just wants to be left alone and to have nothing to do with anyone else because he believed that he had nothing to offer. That changes the moment he saw what was in the new girl eyes.

Tragedy wasn't new to either of their lives but among the secrets and the memories the one thing they both never excepted was to find hope.
