Is it surprising to learn that on the east side of Langley’s campus white laboratory staff didn’t know an all-black computing group existed? Why or why not?

At the time I suppose all black people were more or less invisible to middle-class white people. It makes me wonder if their white superiors and supervisors assumed giving them a job was enough, no need to recognize them for the contributions they make. Without knowing it, the white laboratory employees at Langley benefited from the work of the “colored computers,” but they had no reason to involve themselves directly with them.

Think of the world today. Specialization is so much a part of many large organizations, I bet most folks do not know much about those who work immediately around them.
