Annaliese (goodreadscomannaliese_marie) I've read this book before and I was glad that it was picked again! I agree with Marta that the beginning is a bit slow, but once you get into chapter 6-7 things pick up. I really like Wade's character, I think he is easy to connect to and I hope there is chemistry between him and Art3mis. The whole idea of this book is awesome! I wonder how Ernest Cline came up with the idea.
Check out the author's website (it's really cool and video game-y)

June Luu (dtl0201) | 10 comments I'm about 80 pages through, LOVING IT so far!! And I love how you can actually go to school in Oasis, it's really cool!! Haha! Though sometimes I get confused whether he's actually in Oasis or in real life. Really good so far though!! :D

Yeah, they sound disgusting! But apparently people got so used to them, after the war they didn't like the taste of real eggs!

message 56: by Brie (new)

Brie (bashfulnights) Done with level 1! A little slow getting into the story, but I enjoyed all the references even though most went over my head. I liked Art3mis for a second. Until Wade gave her that hint. It's going to frustrate me if Wade makes that mistake again. I don't trust her.

message 60: by Lorna (new)

Lorna Satchwell I agree with all that says it's willy Wonka meets the matrix!
I don't like wade or trust him. I know he's the main character but he is so obnoxious and annoying. Plus I think he lied to save face. I think he snitch about the location and they blew up his home anyway.

I don't like or trust Art3mis or Aech they both seem shady in the sense that they may be working for I0I. Art3mise has too much intell. (Why set up a camera at the tombe) Aech a glitch in your chat really?!?

Plus Art3mise has a blog that makes her a target from jump. I can't wait to see how this plays out.

Thinking about it now, it is quite fishy, yeah I have to agree. Lol, maybe it'll all unravel near the end or something. But yeah, I actually don't get why she set the camera at the tomb, that was a bit funny... :)

You know another thing i find funny. Art3mis and Aech are notorious Gunters. I mean ole girl is a celebrity practically from her blog, and ole boy is big man on campus with his basement parties. Yet no ones tried to kill them? I don't like or trust those two.

I'm reminded of "Willy Wonka" but like because their young and it's a global competition with an evil company that wants to buy out/own the brand of the bleeding heart eccentric billionaire.

Lorna Satchwell Aria wrote: "I really liked Level One. It was a bit slow at the beggining but it was suppose to be like that because it's a world building part. It's so interesting to read about OASIS and I can totally see it ..."

I can't ever imagine an oasis. I know places that still don't even have the internet let alone other forms of electricity. Plus this story is told from an obsessive lonely atheist orphans perspective.

I'm sure there will always be religious societies that won't use electricity, continue to provide for animals/nature, and protest technological advances.

message 66: by Lorna (new)

Lorna Satchwell I used to play an online RPG called "Second Life" it's sort of like "The Sims" but better because you could make up your own codes to create new junk as in places and items.

Second life reminds me of Oasis except oasis seems way more dope.

message 67: by brisingr (new)

brisingr (brisingrs) I just finished this Level One, and all I can say is that I am enjoying it so far. It reminds me A LOT of the Sword Art Online (SAO) novels, especially with the OASIS, so probably that's why I am not that intrigued by the world.
I don't like any character that much until now, I want to see more development on Art3mis' part. Aech is pretty cool until now. I really hope Art3mis won't be there only as his love interest ;w;
The refferences part is great, and Halliday's character is really amazing + his best friend. Yeah, I really like these characters.
But again, his wish to stay in the game reminds me of SAO's story.

Looking forward to see how the story goes on from now onwards, it really got me interested!

message 68: by Jitka (new)

Jitka (thiswastheveryfirstpage) | 1 comments I am almost halfway trough this book and so far I really like it. The beginning wasn't slow for me I really like the introduction of this world. I haven't read anything like this yet.
I liked Wade at the beginning but I feel like his character developed a lot and I am not sure anymore. So far I like Art3mis but I think there will be some kind of twist about her. And Halliday's character reminds me Steve Jobs story, am I the only one?

I am really exited to read the rest.

message 69: by Wil (new)

Wil | 56 comments I am only on chapter 8 but most of these references are in one ear and out the other, but I am really enjoying the solving of clues left by Halliday can't wait for the live show I have read 64 pages in only one day it's not gonna take me long

message 70: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (yasminarose) I am a child of the 80s, if Halliday was a real man he would only be 2 years older then me. I am loving the 80s references. It is hard to put the book down. I am currently on page 100, I should be at level 2 very soon.

message 71: by Naomi (new)

Naomi Greetings from Jamaica! Loving the book. Reading this makes me wish that I had something this cool to obsess over. Btw..does anyone else wish there was a list of all the movie and song references at the back? I'm a nineties kid..so most of them fly right over my head. :D

message 72: by Sierra (new)

Sierra | 1 comments Oh my gosh, just finished Level One. I love all of the 80's references, this novel is introducing me to new songs, movies, and video games, that I might not have discovered on my own. For example "Dead Man's Party" by Oingo Boingo. I'm obsessed with that song.
This book is so amazing, I do not want to put it down. Level Two will most likely be more amazing, can't wait :)

message 73: by Emily (new)

Emily | 1 comments I'm really enjoying this book so far. It did take some time for me to get into more of the book, but it really did pick up around chapter 7. I'm so excited to read more! I keep wondering how Wade is going to solve the riddle for the jade key.

Celine The Bookish Queen (celinethequeen) It's shaping up to be the best book I've read all year, not that I haven't read any amazing books ;). It makes my nerdy heart soar. I love wade and Art3mis. I can't wait to get through level 2.

message 75: by Leah (new)

Leah | 3 comments I'm loving this so much so far, it's so nerdy and cool which is what I was expecting because everybody said it would be but it's also just really fun and entertaining. The whole quest story arc is so addictive to read, especially when he found the first clue and the whole competition pretty much officially begins and you feel like you're playing along. Plus I really like the whole Charlie and the Chocolate Factory esque thing that's going on, how the protagonist is really poor which reminds me of Charlie, and then Halliday who is like a Willy Wonka type character. Especially the fact that the first key is in Ludus, which shows that Halliday gave everybody on Oasis a fair chance, even if they were a poor low level student. I thought that was really cool :')

Mona (mona_books) | 11 comments The game in the First Gate is AWESOME.
I want it to be real!!

When I started reading it, I was a bit worried because Iwas born in 90's and I don't know most of those games/films/shows/music that's mentioned in the book.
But I could enjoy the story without knowing those so far :)

And I always love it when Japanese stuff/people are in the books written in English :)

Sindre Alexander Ellingsen (repitsu) | 20 comments I'm loving this book so far! It's a crazy rollercoaster ride! My thoughts around the world building is satisfaction! I love it, even though it would be amazing if they litterally went into the game :) the characters are amazing, I love how in deptt written they are. I hope Wade get's to meet his fellow top rankers later on! i'm gonna read level 2 tonight!

message 79: by Annabelle (new)

Annabelle (tempestscorner) Okay so I can already see this book making my favorites list. I love the world and the characters are pretty bloody awesome (apart from the IOI's of course those guys are poop)I wouldn't of picked up this book if it wasn't our book of the month so i'm very glad it got voted in. I loved the moment were it went from fun game with high prizes, to golly corporate poops want to kill me.
Ps:using the word poop because didn't wanna use swear words

message 80: by Ditta (new)

Ditta Reads (ditareads) | 14 comments So this book is extremely awesome this far. OASIS is just so interesting and it could totally be a real thing it the future. Very believable.

And the competition is super awesome! It is just fantastic. I also loved how the book started. The first sentence about how everybody knew where they were and what they were doeing, just loved it!

When the stacks exploded, I just didn't know what to do to myself. I was like: omg this can't be happening omg omg. I totally stressed.

Love the references even though I don't know all of them. Love the other characters like Art3mis and Aech. (And I hate IOI).

So very excited this far. Now I have to find out what happens in level two.

message 81: by Kayla (new)

Kayla | 69 comments Onto Level Two. Level One was amazing and I can't wait to see what happens. I like that it feels like your trying to solve the codes and stuff along with Wade. So excited to read some more. *SPOILERS* When the Stacks blew up this was my face °0°

message 82: by Sweetypie50 (new)

Sweetypie50 | 2 comments I relate to this book so much!! I'm loving it! Reminds me of my Runescape days XD

The Oasis is usually a huge world I would stay away from when it comes to the video games I play, because I hate travel time but I'd probably find my favorite world and just never leave. The Oasis totally reminds me of a current game called Second Life, which people totally live in as opposed to real life. I'm finding the world presented in this book very interesting, cause I feel like we're heading that way.

The argument that Aech and our main character had about Ladyhawke versus other movies, I have that exact conversation with my friends all the time, just different movies. I loved it! Have to say, I freaking love Aech too. His and Wade's relationship is just so much fun to watch.

All the references just have me grinning, cause I feel like I finally get it! Most of it, anyway.

I swear I thought IOI was bluffing about blowing up the stacks. I was shocked that it actually happened but I felt like it was kind of brushed under the rug. I didn't feel the impact of that like I feel I should have. I dunno, maybe that's just me.

Looking forward to Level Two! I'm loving this book!

message 83: by Meghan (new)

Meghan | 1 comments I just finished Level One last night and the book is really really good and I am enjoying Wade's character and narration. I also have this theory about Aech too. I feel like Aech's name is Halliday and he was put in there by Halliday himself to do something. I'm probably wrong lol but I've got that impression from Aech.

My only problem is that I feel like I have sat down and read like 50 pages or whatever and then I look back and I've only read like 25.

message 84: by Adriana (new)

Adriana (adrianaqzada) When this book was selected for the month I wasn't happy. I would have never picked it up by myself. But I'm so glad I'm reading it. I am in love with Art3mis. She is so unique and different. I enjoy how smart the author of this book is. All of the videogame references got me crazy at one point but I was able to keep up. I have the feeling there is something weird about Aech. I don't think he is trust worthy.
I don't know why but I could totally imagine the future getting to the point of having a reality like the one in this book

Yes, it reminded me of Second Life as well! I don't play it, but I've watched a documentary on it about 2 years ago? It's practically the same idea.

I don't think I'd like OASIS in real life though. It would be amazing to go to fictional places and use magic etc. but completely giving up on real life? I wouldn't like that one bit.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Aech as most of you do, although that glitch has me thinking. But I thought someone tried to hack in, I think that's plausible, even though Aech is sure that is impossible, since he's the only one who has access to the room. Actually I was often thinking that it's weird how much privacy you get on OASIS, with all the resources that IOI has. I mean even today you can link user's computer to a certain location or hack in chatrooms, e-mails etc. People seem to really trust chatrooms and personal messages in there to be private.

So far I like Art3mis as well. I am really interested to see how this plays out and if Wade is ever going to meet Art3mis or Aech in real life.

It may be a slow read, but I managed to get through all the information dumps really well. I wasn't bored and I never had to put the book down. So far I'm really happy with it.

message 86: by Nina (new)

Nina (kriekentaart) I picked this book up a couple of days ago, and just finished level one. I had no problem getting into the story as I found the introduction and world building quite fascinating!

So far I like all the characters, not necessarily personality wise, but they're all decently written. Curious to find out more about Art3mis! And there's definitely something going on with Aech (glitch in the chatroom and him being constantly on the move?). I can't quite put my finger on it though. I don't he's spying for the Sixers, because then they wouldn't have need to contact Perzival about the bronze key, but there is something going there...

One thing I noticed was little time is spent on the trailers exploding. Wade is responsible for the deaths of several people, but doesn't really seem emotionally affected by it. Probably because the point of the book isn't to have amazing character development and introspective stuff, so it's okay. I'm expecting a good, but very to the point adventure story, without much blah blah about emotions and surviving in the real world and stuff. But I didn't pick up this book for it to be super realistic and stuff, so again, I'm fine with that :)

message 87: by Albany (new)

Albany (albanycarmona) I agree that there was a lack of impact when it came to all those people dying. I was at least expecting more of an emotional crush to come onto Wade for the death of the old lady but the author only dedicated a couple of sentences to it.

Meghan, I also had the same idea you had about Aech! Since he said his name starts with an H, I thought maybe it would be Halliday and with that glitch in his room? It could be a glitch in his programming!

I'm loving all the references in the book and the story makes me want to stop and play some videogames.

message 88: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 15, 2014 04:30AM) (new)

Just finished Level 1 and loving the book so far!

Albany, about Wade not reacting to the death of his neighbours: I'm thinking that since he's spending so much time in the OASIS he just doesn't feel so connected to the "real world" anymore. If Aech of Art3mis had died I'm sure he would've been devastated but as it is, he didn't feel very strongly about the people who died. Also, he had a lot on his mind at the time (like the fact that he nearly just died). That's how I think about it at least ;)

On a different subject; what do you guys think about the High Five? Do you think they'll team up? Personally I think they will, at least on some point and at least Parzival, Aech and Art3mis.

message 89: by Clarissa (new)

Clarissa (art3misbooks) The story is one of a kind. It's geeky and exciting and as a gamer I would like to join the OASIS soo badly. The game is awesome and I really like the Hunt and the obsession that some people have with it. It kind of reminds me of fangirls nowadays. And Art3mis is so badass, I love her. And Wade is this geeky boy who has so much potential and I want to have him as a friend and have game parties together! So all in all I am freaking loving this book and I do not want it to end!

message 90: by Albany (new)

Albany (albanycarmona) Lia, I guess I an see that real-world/Oasis-world confusion being the case with Wade. As for the High Five, I do think they will team up but only after something drastic happens, maybe one of the five will be in danger or the Sixers will find the next key before them?

message 91: by Kassie (new)

Kassie (sassyykassie) | 36 comments I'm loving it so far! I'm having trouble with the gaming references because I'm really not a gamer but i find that I'm still loving the story!

I can't believe the murderous asshole sixers! Ugh! When the high five are in the basement and all they can say is "they suck" it put my feelings right into the book lol

message 92: by [deleted user] (new)

Albany wrote: "I do think they will team up but only after something drastic happens, maybe one of the five will be in danger or the Sixers will find the next key before them?"

That sounds possible. Maybe they'll team up in the end; that would create some serious suspense because then they would have to decide who of them will get the egg, or they'll have to fight for it between themselves.

message 93: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished Level One ... and I absolutely love it! Not something I would normally pick up probably but glad I got involved in the read-along because I think it's fantastic. Loving all the 80's references (even though I do miss a few seeing as I'm a 90s kid ;) haha) and the world-building in general is just awesome. Can't wait to see where the whole Art3mis plot will end up, as well as finding more out about Aech possibly - he's so mysterious at points! I find it just an all-round quick, easy and (most importantly) really enjoyable read so far!

message 94: by Sady (new)

Sady I love this book so much. Just finished Level One and it's just perfect. At first I was a little annoyed with Wade's character but I quickly grew to love him. I feel like I'm in a video game while reading Ready Player One. Also I was extremely wary about starting this book because I knew I wouldn't pick up on some of the 80's pop culture references but that definitely isn't a problem at all. I feel like everything mentioned is explained well enough, so that the reader can understand the reference. Excited to continue on with the book!

Chu (Pikachu) | 9 comments It's really good. Even though there are a lot of information about the 80's or the world building to absorb, I think it is so well integrated in the story. It is not in the least boring to read. Usually I have a lot of trouble reading descpritions. I can't wait to see what happens in the rest of the stories. And if there will be any twists. Like a traitor or something
