Omg, I can honestly say I’ve never read or listened to anything like this before. I’m not done yet, have 6 minuets left. The quality of the video-
Well this guy gets it. 5 stars for his enthusiasm.
Ok, I had to pause. The guy reading clearly gets & loves this story. I’d love to hear him read Poe. I listened on my way to work so it’s very early. At first I thought the 5 were viruses. But now I’m not sure. I think there’s a ton more between the lines but it’s too early to think that deep. Hopefully you can break it down for me or I’ll look at the comments for the story. One thought that came to me- I wonder if Marilyn Manson has read this story. I bet he’d like it.
I wonder how old our narrator was when everything went down. 4 men & 1 woman? I doubt her sexual escapades are all consensual. Oh!! Who was that guy that had to push the stone up hill but it rolled down & he had to start over every day. OR! The guy tied to the rock only to have his liver ate out by a roc then it’d grow back every night only to repeat every day? This kinda made me think of that too.
"...I leave a moist trail when I move..." Well that was a bit of a mind fuck! I've read a lot about how influential this story has been on so many writers but I'd very carefully avoided knowing any details about it. At first I was thinking it was more science-fiction, (view spoiler) but as it moved on.....
and that sound , made it so much more disturbing. I don't think I would have got the impact Ellison intended had I just read it myself.
Writers don't always make great narrators, but Ellison was superb, obviously knowing the story better than anyone has its perks.
My only criticism was the level of misogyny, which apparently recurs throughout his work.
There were so many levels to this story, I think I need a couple of days to really let it marinate with me, that and a nice cup of tea...and I might just turn the computer off, you know, just in case...
I didn't like the sound effect. I kept having to adjust the volume. that was the author reading it himself? well that's cool. your turning your computer off and here I am on mine lol.

Even my cat was freaked out and tried to figure out where the noise was coming from.
