Today I received a deal for Don Quixote. In doing a little research I noticed there are different translations. I am wondering if any of you have any recommendations on which translation is best? John Rutherford or Edith Grossman? Any comments are welcome. Thank you.

I found this. The four "major" translations that are referenced over and over again are by Smollett, Grossman, Putnam, and Raffel.

I’m going to try and read it in the original Spanish but I came across this discussion of translations. Hopefully it helps. http://www.online-literature.com/foru...

I found a discussion thread about Don Quixote translations here on Goodreads.

My brother in law grew up speaking Spanish at home and English everywhere else. He thought he’d get an easy college credit, and took a Spanish class- and found himself reading Don Quixote in the very original Old Spanish. He nearly failed. So much for an easy A...

Melissa I was wondering the same thing, and thought I’d try to get the same translation as the group.

I know that the quarterly reads all have moderators but can't find the topic thread where this is listed.

I think that the moderator could kind of suggest which translation she is going to favor. I won't get a new book and if I reread it so that I can participate in discussion, it will be what I already own.

I found this, Dianne is a our moderator.

Don Quixote, Dianne!

Gail (gailifer) | 1534 comments The free on-line editions seem to favor Grossman but I haven't checked them all yet
