I found that name curious too. I think it means "sower" like someone who puts seeds in the ground. A darkly humorous way to describe the profession of burying bodies.

What an interesting illustration, especially when we zoom in on the “picture” on the wall. Three people hanging. Why? Is it a rather emblematic touch such as Phiz was later to incorporate so effectively in his illustrations within Dickens’s novels? What could have Dickens told Cruikshank about the arc of the entire novel?

So many questions. How valuable the illustrations are within the novel.

I love this picture! Is that a gate to the left of Dickens with the horizontal fencing, and, if so, why was Dickens climbing over the fence when he could have gone through the gate?

Just wondering ... :-))

I don't know Peter, not yet anyway. I cannot find where I found that picture in the first place. Perhaps when and if I find that place there will be more information.
