Jen, in several places you mention the start date as July 2 as well. Could you clarify which is it? July 1 OR 2?

July 2. Where does it say June 2 (so I can fix it)?

Sorry for the typo on my side... I meant July, not June. But somewhere you say it's July 1, and in other spots it's July 2... So I wasn't sure which day do we start. BTW, Max is with us again. He's Parzival now :)

Maybe it was in the group announcement I sent out. I will go see. No that just said sign up before July. I am sure you would like us signed up and listing our airport destinations.

It's in this thread in your reply "message 44", it still states that one may not start till July 1. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure I saw it on your blog yesterday... (Now it's July 2.) Unless I imagined it being that way...

As a friendly reminder...

You can play this game using non-1001 books too. The main tracking thread is on our blog but we will post updates here (copied from over there). Everyone's name is also listed in the blog so I don't have to randomize traveler events, etc. in multiple places.

So all participants here can read non-1001 books to move across Europe. HOWEVER, for the 1001 group prize, only books that are on the list will count for points.

To track score here, you'll add your list of countries and books as you travel. For non-1001 books just put the score in parentheses. For 1001 books don't use the parenthesis. Then to add up all your 1001 points you'll just add everything not inside parentheses. For your total score (that will be used for the other prizes) you'll add up all your books.

So, here's an example

Jen:
Starting point: US
England - Life after Life (1)
France - Elementary particles 1
Germany - The Safety Net 5**
Poland - Cyberiad (1)
Total 1001 points = 6
Total game points = 8

** (Pretending for a second that I can make a connection to the landmark, I'm not sure)

Make sure you double check the nationalities on this list. Some are way off. i.e. Patricia Highsmith is not Swiss and T.H. White is not Greek, to name a few.

Hilde (hilded) | 376 comments Thanks, Diane! I must confess I haven't looked that much into it, just found it convenient having the list in an excel for easy searching.

Question:
1. I am in the USA, can I read a book here, go to Canada, then fly to the UK
2. Or go to Canada, read a book there, return to US and read a book here and then fly to UK
3. or save the USA to be the last book I read?

Never mind, that is a dumb question. Of course Canada is not part of Europe.

message 77: by Jen (new)

Jen | 1608 comments Mod
Kristel, the US will be the last book you read. You’ll read it to be considered arrived. So your first country will be the place where you land first from the US (and you are right, Canada won’t count for anything).

Trying to make sense of scoring. So non list books, 1 point and list books, more points. But isn’t Elementary Particles a list book, so must not be that.

message 79: by Jen (new)

Jen | 1608 comments Mod
No. Non list books don’t get you any points here (but they do get you points on the blog version - I have additional prizes for this group only). So for tracking here you get 1 point if you read a list book and 5 points for a list book that is also linked to a landmark.

Just make sure to update the blog with your score every once in a while - if you want to be eligible for those prizes too. Otherwise, you can just post here.

as a reminder to all participants: Remember that for each book you complete, your name will be thrown into the randomizer for travel delay the following week. A travel delay will mean that you are sitting out a week (and may miss out on mini challenges for that week).

So if you read 1 book this week, your name will be added to the randomizer once, if you are reading 1-2 books per day, your name will be added 7-14 times.

Scary! But then I can’t read a book a day so that keeps my chances low! Happy to be a slow reader but a week break to catch up on other reading would not be all bad.

Jen, so am I correct to assume that if the person didn't claim/finish a book in a week his/her name won't be entered at all? Or is every participant entered at least once?

Liz M | 194 comments I am reading All Souls' Day for Netherlands (Dutch author), but I believe it is predominately set in Berlin (the end takes place in Madrid, according to the blurb). For those interested, the main character just visited Brandenburg Gate.

That is correct. If you haven’t finished a book, your name won’t be entered at all.

Kelly_Hunsaker_reads ... | 902 comments Hi Jen, I have a question. If I pass through France twice, can I take the book point the first time and the monument point the second time (but no book point)? I have 1001 book that I doubt will go to the monument and 1001 book that will but doesn't sound nearly as interesting. LOL. I am planning to pass through twice so may read both.

I’m not sure what you mean. Do you mean can you get points for Turkey twice or do you mean just traveling through Turkey once but counting it all as Europe? If the latter, then yes.

Kelly_Hunsaker_reads ... | 902 comments Yes, it was the latter. I just wanted to travel through Turkey but part of it is Asia. Not sure I am taking that path, but looking at alternatives. Thanks for the quick response!

Yes, I will allow that. I will give you the one point for travel challenge and the other 2 for diversity challenge. So you wouldn’t double down on the two challenges but you can count them for both. Does that make sense?
