I would like to recommend George Orwell's 1984. Being new to this group I'm not sure if this was nominated previously but this is definitely a book that I will be reading soon.
I agree with Julia, it would be a good idea to read a play. I'd like to nominate Death of a Salesman?

We read Death of a Salesman in June.

Then I'll second Julia's choice.. ;-)
I nominate Carmilla by Le Fanu. I've never read it, but I've enjoyed several of Le Fanu's short stories. His wonderfully lush writing style appeals to me, and this vampire novel predates Dracula by 26 years. It was written in 1872.
