Rewards of the Challenge: Effective Summer 2018

THE REWARDS: CREATE A TASK

1. Everyone who plays gets the pleasure of finding books to fit the tasks, discovering new genres and authors and clearing books off that TBR shelf. In addition, during each challenge some players will earn a chance to create a task for the next challenge.

2. To be eligible to create a task, the player’s profile must be set up to accept messages.

3. Players may pass their task to another player.

4. The players who get to create 25/30 point tasks are NOT eligible for the 20 point tasks or the Midpoint 50 point task (one task per person per challenge).

5. THE 50 POINT MIDPOINT TASK - A task idea submission thread will be opened on the day that the 5-30 point tasks become final at the start of a challenge, on or around the 12th day of the first month.

The 50 point task will require:
1. 3 options.
2. One book per option.
3. Three books totaling at least 750 pages.
4. No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
5. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.
6. No “free choice” options will be allowed. This is a challenge, so tasks that have no element of challenge do not fit the purpose.
7. A task must be accessible to the majority of players, i.e. not limited to a specific format, edition, publisher, etc. and reviewable by the moderators.

Anyone eligible* to design a task may submit an idea (or ideas- each in a separate post, please) for a task that follows the general guidelines above. Your idea should be a sketch that may be developed with the moderators.

* To be eligible to create a task, the player’s profile must be set up to accept Goodreads messages, and he/she must not have a task in the current challenge. Only one task per person per challenge.

The submission thread will be open until the last day of the first month of the challenge.

The group will vote to determine the 50 point task. All ideas that fit the general guidelines will be included in a poll that will open on the first day of the second month of the challenge and run for one week. If the voting is close at the end of the poll, a runoff poll for the top vote-getting ideas will then be opened for 3 days. The runoff poll winner will develop their idea with the moderators to refine their task. The final task may differ from the original idea submission. The task will be posted as close to the midpoint as reasonably possible. The task creator will monitor and answer questions in the help thread.

6. THE 30 POINT TASKS – Players who complete the challenge before the scheduled date for posting the new 5/10/15 point tasks get the opportunity to create a 30 point task for the next challenge.
NOTE: If no one completes a challenge by the posting deadline there will be no 30 point tasks in the next challenge.

7. THE 25 POINT TASKS – Players who complete the challenge after the scheduled date for posting the new 5/10/15 point tasks get the opportunity to create a 25 point task for the next challenge.
NOTE: If no one completes the challenge then the 3 top point earners get to create a 25 point task for the next challenge.

8. THE 20 POINT TASKS – To be eligible to create a 20 point task a player must have earned 100 points in the qualifying challenge.
Specific conditions:

20.1 MOST IMPROVED PLAYER – The player who has improved the most based on the difference in Readerboard points between the current challenge and the previous challenge. To be eligible for this task the player must have scored at least 100 points in the previous challenge.

20.2 ROOKIE AT THE TOP – The first-time player with the highest Readerboard score.

20.3 BEST REVIEW CONTEST – Each player may submit one review for a book read to fulfill a current challenge task. Reviews must be submitted by the posted dates in the appropriate Review Contest thread. A poll will be created and the person whose review earns the most votes will get to design a task. To be eligible the player must have scored 100 points on the Readerboard by the review submission deadline.

20.4 GOLDEN OLDIES - Players may earn a ticket for each book FIRST published in or before 1950. A random ticket will be drawn from the ticket pool to determine who creates this task. Challenge finishers are not eligible for the drawing. Players must specifically request a ticket in the post by claiming "Golden Oldie" and stating the original publication year. See the current season's Posting Requirements for more information.

20.5 BIGGER IS BETTER – Players may earn a ticket for each Big Book read: One ticket for reading a book of 500 pages or more; two tickets for reading a book of 750 pages or more; three tickets for reading a book of 1000 pages or more. See the current season's posting requirements for more details.
A random ticket will be drawn to determine who creates this task. Challenge finishers are not eligible for the drawing.

20.6 SEASONED READER – Each player who has never created a task for any challenge earns one ticket for each challenge they have participated in the SRC. For example, if this is your first challenge you would be awarded one ticket. If this is your third challenge, you would get 3 tickets.
A random ticket will be drawn to determine who creates this task.
Players selected for this task will not be eligible to be selected for this task again.

20.7 SHORTER IS SWEETER – The names of players who earn more than half the possible points in a challenge will be entered in a random drawing.
Players selected for this task will not be eligible to be selected for this task again.

20.8 NICKELS & DIMES – The names of players who complete all the 5 and 10 point tasks without completing the challenge will be entered into a random drawing.

20.9 MODERATOR'S PET – One player on the current Readerboard who has not made a posting error by failing to follow the "Posting Requirements" or to include task "Required" elements in their Completed Task postings will be chosen at random to create a task in the upcoming challenge.

20.10 GROUP READS –To be eligible to participate in the Group Reads process, a player must not have nominated a book in the current challenge's Group Reads. A player may not nominate books in two successive challenges.

Once a year, during the Spring Challenge, players will make suggestions in a Group Reads Category Ideas Thread. The moderators will curate a list of categories from the Ideas Thread for the next year with 2 fiction and 1 non-fiction category selections each season.

The top 30 eligible players on the Midpoint Readerboard will nominate books that fit the three categories. Players tied with the person in 30th place will be included.

A pool of 5 eligible alternate nominators will be selected from the next highest scoring players on the Readerboard. Their nominations will only be included if a top 30 player elects to pass or misses a response deadline.

Book nominators and alternates must respond within 5 days.

A poll of the nominated books will be created for each category.

Books selected as a Group Read in any past challenge will not be included in future polls.

9. THE 5, 10 & 15 POINT TASKS – Moderators select tasks from ideas submitted by participants or their own ideas.

10. See the current GUIDELINES FOR TASK CREATORS to learn more.
