Okay. I finally got up enough nerve to watch it again. Whew. Just as impactful, but it was definitely easier to watch the second time around.
I watched it again last night now that I'm home. It wasn't easy but this time I knew what to watch and listen for in context. There were little subtleties in Sam and Tobias' performances, nuances, that were extremely powerful.
I wonder why Jamie's conversation with Murtagh in Gaelic was not translated.
I wonder why Jamie's conversation with Murtagh in Gaelic was not translated.
I know a lot of people say that. Ron Moore said long ago that they were not translating because it is Claire's POV and she didn't know Gaelic. But this conversation was not in front of Claire.
When Murtagh later told Claire what Jamie had said to him...I took that to be the way of giving us the "translation" without just "translating it"...if that makes sense. The conversation was obviously intense - that came across loud & clear.
It did. I felt like that was probably Murtagh arguing with Jamie about it...trying to talk him out of it. It was interesting hearing it in Gaelic...even not understanding it.
Here's a response by DG in a recent interview about the rape scene being presented in Jamie's point of view, a change from the book.
The show incorporated a POV change so that we could see some of it through Jamie’s eyes and experiences, which changed how we learned about the extent of the rape and torture by Black Jack in the end. How did you feel about this change?
I wrote the book in first person because it was my first book, and it was easier. I thought that shift works very effectively because this is a visual medium. I understand the visual media very well as I used to write comic books for Walt Disney, and I’ve written a graphic novel. How you carry a story in pictures is different than how you do it in text. In the book, Jamie is telling her little bits and pieces ex post facto about what he went through. He’s telling very vivid, horrifying little details, but it still doesn’t have quite the impact of seeing those little vivid horrifying details. Imagine how boring a scene [would be] where the camera comes in, and it is focused on their faces as he is brokenly spilling these little bits to her. If you aren’t seeing anything but their faces for 15 minutes, you’d be bored. The way they did it is much more effective in terms of the visual medium.–Vulture

It was really riveting...it was so intimate & emotional that I felt like I was seeing something I shouldn't be. Like I should turn away but I couldn't stop watching. I think it's probably the most intense, emotional, heartwrenching scenes/shows I've ever watched. Well done!
I completely agree. Even the second watch, which allowed me to focus on some nuances, it felt like I was a voyeur.
OMG! DG did an interview in which she said that while no one knows for certain when season 2 will air, she has heard rumblings of April 2016. A whole year!
I do not know. I expected this fall. But it makes one blogger's final comment, that she would see us in 2016, make sense.
Somebody really needs to give the STARZ folks a good shaking:) Somehow, I think they're positioning this for larger purposes.
DG posted a blog link on FB called The Great Scot Blog. Apparently they have translated some of the Gaelic bits from the finale. Here is the link, hope it works. http://greatscotblog.com/2015/06/01/o...
Thank you, Dawn (yes, the link works). I needed that. Turns out what they conveyed in body language pretty much matched what they said.
I know. This is going to be a long 10 months. I thought the 6 between the two parts of this season was too long.
That is what I have read as well. But we only get 13 episodes. Not at all sure why, since this is a longer book.
I was wondering if the year long wait had anything to do with the span of time between book 1 & book 2. We'll have to adjust to the way they look 20 years later & all that. Maybe they think we need a year to get the "young" characters out of our heads & prepare to meet them older. Just a thought that crossed my mind.
Well actually, book two is really about their time before the uprising. Only the parts of Claire remembering it to Roger and Brianna are with her being 20 years older. Most of this next season should be with them young. Book three is all about them 20 years later.
I didn't want to say because I'm only about 25% into book 2 but other than a bit in the beginning, they, so far, were still young.
I just remember book 2 starting with Claire 20 years later...with her daughter. So I was thinking the next TV show would probably start that way.
Yes, I'm the beginning of the book, she is about 52. But only in the parts where she is in current day Scotland.
What about the writing? Directing? You should see the list of nominees...with some exceptions, it's just a popularity contest.
Here's a deleted wedding scene I hadn't viewed. Maybe some of you have but I thought you might like.
