Fishface | 14159 comments I have seen this meme floating around stating that most serial killers are Scorpios, and after enough repetitions of that statement it started to bother me. Could it be true? I was bound to wonder about it because I grew up in the 1970s, when your Sun sign was considerably more important than your blood type. And as someone who used to work in the field of survey research, I had a lot of technical questions about this meme.

What do they mean by "most"? Is that "most" figure statistically significant?

Are they just talking big name serial killers, or do they even know about the zillions of guys who kill 'just' 2 or 3 people and are forgotten in a week?

Are they using computer-generated natal charts to make sure that a guy like Jeff Dahmer, who was born on the day the Sun changed signs, was really born under the sign they thought he was?

What's their definition of "serial killer"? A lot of people count contract killers, spree killers and other mass murderers as SKs, and they don't fit the FBI definition.

A lot of others have never heard that they've rolled back the requirement so that you only have to kill 2 people in order to qualify. A short series is still a series!

What about guys who were clearly SK types, but who luckily got captured after a single killing? (A good example would be the three kids with the sledgehammer in Why Did They Kill?.) Should they count or not?

Have they taken into account that while an SK may have been convicted of only 1 killing, there may be sufficient evidence to show he is an SK after all? Think Steve Judy. If you go by conviction records, he's a mass murderer and not qualified for this research project. If you go by the other killings they're pretty sure he committed, then he's an SK. Unless they are wrong about the other killings, and then he's not one. Guh.

So I went ahead and launched my own, critically flawed study of the matter, simply collecting as many SK names and birthdates as I could find and putting them all on a list under the headings of the 12 Sun Signs. No computer charts in most cases, of course, and bear in mind that a lot of the ones with computer charts have them based on wrong information, or partial information that could completely invalidate their finding that the guy was, say, a Scorpio vs. a Libra. So I just did the dumbest thing possible and went by generally-accepted information on known birthdays.

I totally ignored the fact that violent tendencies are not indicated by Sun sign. There are specific indications in a birth chart that show that, and even if you have that tendency you never have to act on a violent impulse unless you have, for instance, organicity issues that make self-control impossible. I'm just testing, or -- let's be honest -- challenging the meme that says "most of them" are Scorpios.

Fishface | 14159 comments And the results are:

Aries (3/21-4/20): 29 SKs
Taurus (4/21-5/21): 25 SKs
Gemini (5/22-6/21): 28 SKs
Cancer (6/22-7/23): 32 SKs
Leo (7/24-8/23): 37 SKs
Virgo (8/24-9/23): 34 SKs
Libra (9/24-10/23): 29 SKs
Scorpio (10/24-11/22): 33 measly SKs
Sagittarius (11/23-12/21): 32 SKs
Capricorn (12/22-1/20): 32 SKs
Aquarius (1/21-2/19): 31 SKs
Pisces (2/10-3/20): 38 SKs

As you can see, the point spread is almost equal across the 12 Sun signs.

message 4: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 14159 comments Item: SKs tend to be very heavy drinkers, and I note that the sign with the largest # of SKs, Pisces, is the one I've always been told is associated with drug addiction. Jeff Dahmer needed a 12-pack a day just to get through, and on the day he killed Margery Gardner Neville Heath put away 5 whiskeys on top of 47 -- count 'em, 47 -- beers. What, then, do we do with the fact that Dahmer is a Taurus and Heath a Gemini?

Item: I was a little crestfallen to see only 29 SKs born under my own Sun sign, Libra -- we're ruled by Eris, the planet of discord and chaos, and I expect better of this bunch in the way of insanity and violence.

Item: At the same time, I was a little pleased that out of that small number, 3 SKs were born on the birthday I share with Truman Capote, the father of modern true crime. And this kind of fcrewed-up thinking is exactly how serious research findings get distorted in the first place. Not that this counts as serious research by any stretch of the imagination.

Item: I did think to check on the MOs and signatures of the SKs born under Scorpio. Almost all SKs are sexually weird, and Scorpio is all about heavy-duty lust, am I right? Well, frankly, that idea doesn't hold water either. These guys are pretty paraphilic. But they're no more paraphilic than any other SKs as near as I can tell. In some cases, they're LESS paraphilic.

Item: Some of the most paraphilic Scorps shouldn't even be SKs, except they're really dumber than hammers. Gary Heidnik, pretty sexually twisted, didn't intend either of his murder victims to die. What do we even do with a guy like this?

Maybe on some fly-by-night self-publishing platform. That would be in keeping with the seriousness of this analysis.

Fishface | 14159 comments Google! A great deal of it was on Murderpedia. If I were at the office I could copy and paste the whole Word document with all the names and birthdays, all 384 names. And I keep hitting new veins with more and more SKs, the more I dig!

message 9: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 14159 comments I can just copy and paste the whole list if you really want to see it. It's just a Word document. At this point we have:

Aries (3/21-4/20): 32 SKs
Taurus (4/21-5/21): 30 SKs
Gemini (5/22-6/21): 36 SKs
Cancer (6/22-7/23): 37 SKs
Leo (7/24-8/23): 41 SKs
Virgo (8/24-9/23): 38 SKs
Libra (9/24-10/23): 34 SKs
Scorpio (10/24-11/22): 38 SKs
Sagittarius (11/23-12/21): 38 SKs
Capricorn (12/22-1/20): 38 SKs
Aquarius (1/21-2/19): 37 SKs
Pisces (2/10-3/20): The current winner with 46 SKs -- wait, 47!

I wasn't expecting that number

message 14: by Fishface (last edited May 29, 2018 09:50AM) (new)

Fishface | 14159 comments Taurus is actually pretty low. Sorry, Erin and Bella -- I discovered that I entered 5 of the birthdates under the wrong sign, and moved them out of Pisces and back into Aquarius where they belonged. They are all once again pretty much "even Steven." But Leo and Pisces are still winning by a nose -- 41 SKs each.

Fishface | 14159 comments OK, every website I look at says WAYNE Boden was born "around 1948," but he's also on a listing of serial killers by sign and it states confidently that he's an Aries. How do they know that? Of course nobody posts his birth chart so I can get the straight poop.

message 28: by Fishface (last edited Jun 11, 2018 11:29AM) (new)

Fishface | 14159 comments Air signs are supposed to be thinkers rather than emotional types (the water signs) or highly passionate (the fire signs) or practical (the earth signs). Gemini is the Mutable air sign, meaning they are the most flexible and changeable of the bunch. They also have a reputation, for this very reason, for being two-faced, slippery, dishonest or even criminal. Of course most people under that sign use their Gemini powers for good instead of evil, being good multitaskers and communicators. My sign, Libra, is the Cardinal air sign, supposedly all about leadership, although mostly we just pick arguments with people, albeit often with the lofty goal of writing new laws or winning or preventing wars. Aquarius is the Fixed air sign, which is almost a contradiction in terms because air isn't terribly fixed, but they do tend to be fixedly attached to unconventional ideas and zany political or social movements, often being standard-bearers for marginalized groups.

I'm sure there's a lot more to it than that, but that's a decent thumbnail sketch.

message 29: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 14159 comments Added 2 more today. Shawn Grate is a Leo and Thomas Whisenhant is an Aquarius.

Dave Dahmer said on the radio he's glad he's an Aquarius because all the serial killers out there are Tauruses. Maybe I should drop him a line and let him know his sign is leading the pack by a nose... :)

Fishface | 14159 comments I'm quite vexed at the way there will be a pair or an actual team of SKs and you can only get information about one of them. The Ripper Crew and the Dnepropetrovsk Maniacs being excellent examples.

Fishface | 14159 comments I don't think there's a book I can read on Efren Saldivar, with whom I share a birthday, but there's one on Michael Lockhart, one on Dayton Rogers and several on Truman Capote, the father of the true-crime nonfiction novel -- we were all born 9/30.
