Thank you.

Margo | 11628 comments Kristie, I plan to start with The Daylight Gate by Jeanette Winterson for tree followed by Vinegar Girl The Taming of the Shrew Retold by Anne Tyler for shoe. Can you confirm that these covers are OK? Thanks :-)

message 53: by Valerie (new)

Valerie I'll probably be starting with By the Pricking of My Thumbs by Agatha Christie, and I found a picture of my cover with a flower (which is not on goodreads): https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1...

message 56: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments haha Debra - right back at'cha ;-D

Bit late to the party - it is 17.13 pm over here, but I am about to start The Daylight Gate for my evening read ;-)

message 57: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Haha well, I have discovered that By the Pricking of my Thumbs is one of the few Agatha Christie books that has to be read in a certain order and I have not read all the previous books yet. So, change of plans! Kristie, would this Endless Night cover count for moon? https://www.google.com/search?q=endle...

message 58: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Is it the first one with the moon and the bird, Valerie? If so, it will work, though I think more for bird.

message 59: by Trudy (new)

Trudy (trudyan) | 1779 comments I’ll be starting A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing by Eimear McBride (for apple) later today.

Lanelle | 4020 comments I'm 32% into my first book, A Spirited Manor (O'Hare House Mysteries, #1) by Kate Danley . The main character is going to attend a seance.

Edited to add: and a murder during the seance at 43%!

message 61: by Valerie (new)

Valerie No, it's the one with the house and moon at the bottom of the cover

Kristie | 19137 comments This one? Image and video hosting by TinyPic If so, yes, it works.

Valerie Yep, awesome, thanks!

Annerlee | 2871 comments I'm starting with The Witch of Napoli

The Witch of Napoli by Michael Schmicker
I still need to find an audiobook for later though (when washing up, walking to work etc) Not sure if this would count for flowers...??
dandelion wine - audible

What do you think Kristie?

That's weird. I'm accompanying a spiritualist to a seance too!

message 66: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments That's a tough one, Annerlee. It's more a sea of flowers than a focus on a flower. So, it sort of falls into that category of a forest isn't really a tree or a restaurant scene isn't a chair, I think.

Lanelle | 4020 comments Annerlee wrote: "That's weird. I'm accompanying a spiritualist to a seance too! "

I hope your seance is safer than mine was!

message 68: by Annerlee (new)

Annerlee | 2871 comments Haha. An evil spirit did some pushing around, but any murders took place outside, so my seances were marginally safer, but still pretty scary at times ; )

OK. I'll look for an alternative... But turning in for the night now (zzzzz)

Annerlee | 2871 comments Good Morning Team! How's everyone doing?

message 71: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Good Morning all!

It is a beautiful sunny day here in ireland - perfect for outdoor reading. Unfortunately I'm not feeling very well so won't be up to posting too much but I will do a lot of listening ;-)

I have finished my first 2 books.

Tree: The Daylight Gate The Daylight Gate by Jeanette Winterson . Very gruesome and uncomfortable as it was based on events very close to the truth.

Shoes: Vinegar Girl: The Taming of the Shrew Retold Vinegar Girl The Taming of the Shrew Retold by Anne Tyler Light read, very pleasant change of pace after the last. I always liked that play and the retelling was fun.

Next I'm going to try The Cleaner The Cleaner (John Milton #1) by Mark Dawson for gun. This was a freebee so if it doesn't grab my I will quickly but it aside.

Happy reading team

Annerlee | 2871 comments We had a couple of sunny days and now the haar is rolling in from the sea. No sun today then : ( I'll be staying inside - there will be midges!
I'm listening to Hag-Seed (Hogarth Shakespeare) by Margaret Atwood and have started reading Bubba and the Dead Woman by C.L. Bevill .
Early days for both yet, but they've started well.

Lanelle | 4020 comments Margo, I remember one Toppler where I came down with a bad cold at the beginning of it. I certainly didn't feel well, but I got a lot of reading done!

message 78: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle | 4020 comments Annerlee, I hope you enjoy Bubba and the Dead Woman by C.L. Bevill . I think it's a great story. I was thinking of putting the 3rd in that series, Bubba and the Missing Woman (Bubba Snoddy, #3) by C.L. Bevill , on my list for this Toppler.

message 82: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Whew, I am not a morning person but I woke up at 6:30 this morning and couldn't get back to sleep so decided to read, and ended up finishing Endless Night! The first two thirds were pretty boring, but I flew through the last few chapters and it was, of course, a classic Agatha Christie mindblowing ending.

I'm debating about what book to start next. I was thinking about A Natural History of Dragons or I may start on Flowers of the Killer Moon as it's my book club's choice for June, if you think this cover would count for sun, Kristie:
Killers of the Flower Moon The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann
If not, I can always read it next weekend, and instead read my dragon book I've been wanting to read or maybe Maltese Falcon :)

Margo | 11628 comments Thanks guys - only a sinus infection combined with poor nights sleep. As I said - good day for listening ;-)

The Cleaner wasn't for me so I ditched it after about 20 mins. That's another one off my TBR (but I keep finding unread books that were shelved wrongly so I'm still not managing to cut it down :-o

Now listening to The Last Family in England by Matt Haig .

Sounds like a fun book

Kristie | 19137 comments I haven't gotten too far on my books yet. I actually did take a nap! I blame Debra!! Just kidding! I didn't sleep well last night and had a migraine earlier. The nap seems to have helped though, so after dinner I hope to catch up on a bit of reading. :)

message 87: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Kristie, hope the migraine is under control - I am a fellow sufferer. I crashed out for nearly 4 hours so I will probably be reading through the night. But I needed it! Debra has a lot to answer to answer for haha

Annerlee, I have enjoyed all the Matt Haig books I have read so far. No 5 star material but all solid 4's. As you say - fun 😊

message 88: by Annerlee (new)

Annerlee | 2871 comments Re Matt Haig books: This is the first one I've tried, but I'm loving the small town mentality of the characters - it reminds me of the island mentality of where I live and it's got me smiling quite a bit.

I didn't get as much reading done as I'd hoped yesterday - our website had a problem and I spent a couple of hours fixing it, then we had a grocery delivery (and we just had to try a few things - the cupboards have been bare for a couple of days and it was so good to have goodies again), then a friend turned up yesterday evening on a surprise visit from the mainland.

Oh well, I read on the bus on the way to work and can take an extended lunch hour to make up some ground.

Yes, there is something about his books that makes me smile 😊 Do you live on one of the Scottish islands Annerlee? I have a friend that was born on one of the tiny ones - I can never remember the name of it! They sound like a different world. She didn't see a banana til she was 7 on a trip to the mainland. They would last the boat trip to her island !

message 90: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I picked up Children Of The Deterrent (Halfhero Book 1) by Ian W. Sainsbury yesterday. I will use it for eye next. There is 3 hours left in my current listen.

Today is a holiday here so should get some decent reading time but I have to go visiting *mutter mutter - interfering with reading time lol*

I've just picked it up too - the audiobook is 'deal of the day'. Lots of my books have eyes on them, something I wouldn't have believed possible.

Yes. I live in the Shetland Isles (North Mainland Shetland). That's the place where all the murders happen, according to Anne Cleeves ( not true ! )

It's a nice, relaxed toppler Kristie. I'm enjoying it very much 😄

message 96: by Trudy (new)

Trudy (trudyan) | 1779 comments Finished my first book, A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing, for apple. It was a challenging read, not the best choice for a toppler. Next, I’m reading The Crow Eaters The Crow Eaters by Bapsi Sidhwa , for feather. It’s an easier read, and quite entertaining, so far.

Annerlee | 2871 comments Just finished Bubba and the Dead Woman for shoes. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. This is despite the book's voluptious loose woman being named after me (Annalee). Oh well.
Bubba and the Dead Woman by C.L. Bevill

I've sneaked a quick read at work, so it'll be lunchtime before I start my next book. It might be The Scarlet Pimpernel or one of the many books I've collected with eyes on the front. Don't know yet.
The Scarlet Pimpernel by Emmuska Orczy

Margo | 11628 comments I've started Children Of The Deterrent. It is my first by this author and I am really enjoying it. The narration is excellent.

message 100: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I'm about 45% through The Summer Children (The Collector, #3) by Dot Hutchison and it's good, but difficult to read at points. Trigger warnings all over the place for child abuse and rape.

I also just started Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple and it's a bit weird the way it's written. I didn't realize it was written through letters or at least it's started out that that way. I listen to more today and see how it goes.
