(view spoiler)[ Names have power in some stories. I know that in some Fae lore, knowing a person's full name gives the Fae full power over them. So maybe it's the same here? The Friend might be someone magical and would have power over Legend if they know his name. But that's all speculative. Maybe it's less about his name and more about his identity like you said. Why shouldn't Legend watch over her to make sure she actually does the stuff she is supposed to do? Or everything is just one big lie and nobody is actually related to Legend. Also, wouldn't be that kinda awkward? Assuming that Scarlett and Julian stay together, and Tella and Dante are endgame, Dante would be Julian's brother-in-law but also his brother??? Chapter 1 - 27

(view spoiler)[ This story is quite different from the first book. I feel like the plot itself makes sense--Tella seeking her mother--but all the extra things throw me off. I can't remember that the Fates are mentioned in the first book (a Ctrl + F tells me they aren't there) and they seem to come out of nowhere. It feels like most of the plot wasn't really realised after Caraval was finished. Anyone could've been The Friend and the coin could mean anything. The next Caraval could've been anything.

But aside from that, I'm enjoying it well enough. I find Tella more likeable than Scarlett since she actually does things. She doesn't need a love interest to push her into action. She is aware that she is directed through the game and she is aware what's at stake. I loved her fight with Maiden Death since she actually just kept going and going and didn't really need rescuing. Well, she needed it after the fact, but not during the fight itself. (hide spoiler)]

Adopted brothers or form a brother like bond? Also if Dante is Legend than he has been alive for several hundred years and Julian is his brother he would be with for the majority of the time which makes also makes him several hundred years old. (view spoiler)[Yeah pretty much all of the focus of this book isn't really mentioned in the last book. I don't think there mom was even mentioned much in the last book other than that she ran away. The scope of the two stories is also completely different.
I also enjoyed reading about Tella more than Scarlet. All of the clues just kind of come to Scarlet while Tella is more proactive about finding clues. (hide spoiler)]

After that ending, I'm jumping into Finale right after I read some of the annotated notes of the ending from Garber (it's not in all versions) and do a review. It's 5 stars for sure.

I got the feeling that he was just faking it as a way to claim the crown. The way he just left Tella was a bit harsh, I feel bad for her. Still shipping her and the Prince of Hearts though!
