Alyssa Rose | 1 comments Reading the stories of those whose voices have been systematically silenced is imperative, especially in the age of racially charged protests, brutality, and conversations.

Harshmi | 2 comments We live in world where racism still exists and books like these give people the voice to speak up against the racism they face in some or the other way everyday

13_Books | 1 comments There is an important reason that the book, 'The Hate You Give' is important to read now (in today's society) and I will thoroughly explain why I think it is. This book is important to read today, because of a reason grounded in a lot of our society. A lot of our society thinks that our word is perfectly equal, but this book is a much needed reminder to prove that it is not. We have turned a blind eye to many societal problems, and withhold attention from them using petty excuses. Just because some things have evened out- in terms of equality- doesn't mean that it all has. And just because of the smooth spots, some people have turned a blind eye towards the rough spots that still linger in our society. We need a book like 'The Hate U Give' to help everyone- from the 'turn a blind-eye' person to the well-informed- to help understand that, 'Yes, there IS a problem.' And then- and only then- will we one day be able to all come out of our houses feeling equally safe and secure. So if everyone were to read 'The Hate U Give,' everyone would be able to understand. And since knowledge is key to success - the knowledge of the problem of police violence against African Americans will help our society better grow, and not make this a problem anymore. Therefore, a book like 'the Hate U Give ' is vital to today's society because of the important, societaly-grounded, reason described above.

Colleen Chi-Girl (colleenchi-girlakacolleensnapped) As a feminist and an elementary teacher, 'The Hate You Give' should be on everyone's must read list, certainly every teacher, everyone in education, who touches the lives of children of every color, everyone in the police force and armed forces. I wonder what MLK, Jr. would think now of our "progress". I know he would keep going and keep encouraging in a non violent way.

Alexis Jones | 1 comments In a society plagued by police brutality and narrow-minded people, literature of this type is crucial. We can read this novel, learn from it, and then go out and make changes in the world. Without works of fiction such as this, some people might never learn about other people's perspective and therefore never change anything, which is why it is so important.

message 356: by Mona (new)

Mona | 7 comments THUG deals with issues that are still present to this day since inequality and discrimination by police forces and society in general and whoever looks different is always seen as guilty regardless of the fact there is no proof or even a search for evidence/proof to corroborate that act of taking a live unjustly just because you have a badge and carry a gun does not entitle you to "Shoot first and ask questions later" as this happens a lot in America and it made people protest and gave rise to movements such as Black Lives Matter. The fact that this is issue is at the forefront of the issues troubling many is that it is being adapted into a film, which will make more people aware of the problems they face and the fact the authority and police brutality are creating a strain and mistrust between the citizens and law enforcement and affects the law-abiding cops and paint them in bad light. This proves that a real solution should be thought of and implemented to prevent more unnecessary deaths

message 357: by Maria Isabel (new)

Maria Isabel Samonte | 1 comments This book is important because of the political and social message that it gives, especially in our time wherein discrimination is prevalent. This book is inspired by the "Black Live Matter" Movement, which is an important subject to tackle especially the younger generation so that they will be more aware about equality and mutual respect for others.

Jennifer R. (jenniferruiz) | 4 comments I believe it is important to read this book because all people are valuable and we need to feel the pains and joys from other people and be aware of the racism that occurs. We also need to be aware of a true representation of the people and its culture, to avoid stereotypes.

message 359: by Emily (new)

Emily (efmbooks) This book is important to give insight for those who may not face the same struggles to learn what it’s like for others. In today’s society it is so important for us to understand each other so we stop being scared of each other.

Andrea Motta (deamotta) | 1 comments In Brazil, there is a genocide against young black lives going on particularly in the favelas and no one is talking about this. This books sheds lights to this important conversation world wide.

message 362: by Alex (new)

Alex (goodrunalex) I think that the ongoing issue of police violence against POC is now, finally, beginning to be brought into the view of a majority of citizens, globally, and I think it is important to get as many perspectives as you can on an issue in order to best understand it. This book seems to be able to eloquently do that and it is extremely important to be able to understand all sides in order for all of us to put our best foot forward and move toward a viable solution. I am so glad awareness has been raised on such a dominant issue in my culture, I hope this book can not only help keep the momentum but provide a sort of guidance in the approach for a more equal and less stressful and scary future.

message 363: by Nadine (new)

Nadine Smith (cool_story_poe) | 1 comments Because it's real life. Because it's relevant. Because we will need books like this to remind us that we NEED BOOKS LIKE THIS.

message 364: by Alysa (new)

Alysa Fenner | 1 comments This is my go to book recommendation for everyone who asks me for a recommendation right now. I truly feel like getting a “child’s view” well teenagers view can really be eye opening to others. Readers get to read first hand experiences of what it is like growing up in America as a black teen. Because although this book is fiction, it is many people’s reality in one way or another. This book is so real—it helps readers realize that just because things are okay in “their neighborhood” doesn’t mean things are okay every where. This book is SO important because it can help people realize America should be doing more to help with the police brutality, to help people who are born into terrible situations (poverty, homelessness, parentless, etc.), and to help with gun violence.

I was in constant fear throughout this book that someone else was going to die—one of these characters who I had become attached to—who were real to me. But for so many people, this isn’t fiction but their reality, those characters are their loved ones. This book is important now because people need to realize we are far more similar than we are different. And that the world would be a better place if we all tried to help lift each other up instead of tear each other down.

Majo Guevara (majoguevarad) | 7 comments It is important because it shows us what is happening at the moment and put a controversial contemporary issue on display.
