message 51: by Bailey (new)

Bailey | 4 comments The more we talk and learn about this ongoing issue, the more awareness will take place and awareness will hopefully bring about more and more positive action to change and stop this unjust violence.

message 52: by Megan (new)

Megan Gokey One will have more have empathy for people of color and hopefully be able to see the tip of the iceberg of racism they deal with in the USA.

message 53: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenanalepa) | 1 comments We live in a time when violence against black Americans is denied and ignored. Visibility to this issue is vital if we’re going to get better.

message 54: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Alberque | 1 comments The Hate U Give reminds readers of all ages that racism is a systemic issue in America. It allows readers living with police violence to see themselves reflected in literature, while also offering a window into those stories for those readers who are privileged enough to not experience them.

message 55: by Beth (new)

Beth (biblioholicbeth) | 5 comments It's, sadly, very timely - and our many in charge refuse to see a problem. In fact, they openly instigate.

message 56: by Stella (new)

Stella (stellaandstories) | 4 comments This book will always be important, not only now. Right now it's important, because this story tells what's going on in the world (specifically in the US) at the moment. It shows us that something needs to be done about it.

message 57: by Louise (new)

Louise | 3 comments We live in a world where more and more black people are being killed by the police. It's important with a book that tells the truth about how the American justice system works and how it is influenced by systematic racism.

message 58: by Megan (new)

Megan | 16 comments It’s real, and it speaks to all ages.

message 59: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Peppercorn (kiwicanread) | 3 comments I loved this book so much. It's so important to read because it helps to educate people on an important topic that some people are kind of ignorant and blind about. It can teach us all a little something about justice, equality and kindness.

This is so especially pertinent now! Police violence against minority people has been pervasive FOREVER, but is particularly rampant now that there is a US leader who is prejudiced. No one should be persecuted unfairly by law enforcement officials, whether it is the local police force, ICE, or any other public institution. All lives do matter, but it is so very obvious that for many law enforcement personnel black/brown lives do NOT matter! It seems they delight in exploiting their ability to persecute discriminately, not according to the law, but according to their own beliefs, preferences, and prejudices. At least this issue is now coming to the forefront much moreso than it has in the past. It seems to have finally entered the mainstream consciousness and let us hope that it will be changed into a more positive future for everyone, but particularly those who are most vulnerable! Though I feel that will be difficult to accomplish until US leadership changes for the better. SMH

Elpida (hopenwonders) (hopenwonders) | 5 comments It's important because unfortunately this is a problem we have nowadays. Racism is still a thing that exists and through this book people are able to educate themselves with these kind of problems. Plus it's a very diverse book.

message 62: by Katrina (new)

Katrina | 3 comments The Hate U Give is an important book to read right now because it humanizes the issue of police shootings. A lot of the discourse around police shootings is concerned with justifying them by dehumanizing the victims as criminals who deserved what happened to them. The book deals with how these shootings affect entire communities, as well as addressing the issue of whether having committed a crime is sufficient justification for someone to be shot by a police officer. It also addresses the issue of people feeling devalued by the system and how that leads to riots and protests that are often viewed by outsiders as proof that the community is unruly and dangerous, instead of the result of frustration with an unfair system.

message 63: by Yeshamaniar (new)

Yeshamaniar | 2 comments It's important because this is a topic and issue that has not been portrayed in novels previously. In order for more people to learn about police violence and brutality, we need to keep reading and talking about it more and this book aids in doing exactly that.

message 65: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (blkel14) | 7 comments The issue of police violence is extremely current and pressing right now in the United States, and THUG opens up necessary dialogues about race, privilege, abuses of authority, diversity, etc.

message 66: by Emma (new)

Emma (eh1300) My life is not like Starr’s. I live in a sheltered bubble where 90% of the people around me are white. I don’t experience what people like she does, and what people outside the fictional realm deal with. But I want to understand, I want to empathize. Reading this book brought new insights into my life, letting me learn about the world outside my own. And how I’m not so different either. I too am a teenage girl. I don’t have to deal with the same problems as Starr, but I do have my own struggles.

message 67: by Andreína (new)

Andreína (andreinaisabel) | 13 comments this is such an important book! it makes me curious because I feel it is told from a point of view I know nothing about. everyone should read narrators which they don't feel related to in order to learn more

message 68: by RachelvlehcaR (new)

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 26 comments Why do you feel this book is important to read now?

It's an important subject and book to read during these times. It's so relevant to today. There is a lot of topics this book is focusing on in with the overtone of the shooting that occurred in the book. It is focusing on how our main character has to change her identity from when she is in her own community to when she goes to school. This is a reality of what many have to do. it's about friendships, loss of friendships (through choices and death), challenges, stereotypes, stigma, teen pregnancy is touched on, drugs and addiction, systemic racism, family structure, support systems, and so much more. This if for sure an important book to read. It doesn't matter if you are a young adult or adult. This is a way of opening eyes and starting the conversation.

message 69: by CJ (new)

CJ Dawn (cjdawn236) | 3 comments Books give people a chance to experience thoughts and feelings in a way they may not normally - it brings them closer to the situation. Someone who may feel disconnected from these events in society can get a whole new perspective and understanding on them from reading books like this.

message 70: by Rhiannon (new)

Rhiannon | 9 comments Now more than ever the world needs to recognize how race is constructed and constructs the world we live in. This book is vital for all communities, but especially American ones. White audiences obviously need to read it in order to see this issue from the side they probably haven't considered. People of color need this book as validation and representation of their stories. The fact that it is geared to a young audience further elevates its importance. Young people witness violence frequently in this country and it can be a source for coping with the trauma and grief and anger that comes from senseless acts of violence.

message 71: by [deleted user] (new)

Police brutality is a very hot topic right now, and it's important to be educated and learn about police brutality because it affects every single American. As a person who really loves history, I look back to the past and see police violence happening throughout time--I think back specifically to the iconic image of John Lewis getting beaten by a state trooper and how that image could've easily been taken days ago. Something needs to be done about police brutality, and opening up the conversation about it is where the change starts.

message 72: by Ally (new)

Ally Baum | 3 comments This book is important to read now because similar events are occurring in our society today and we need to learn from them so this doesn't occur since we are all equal and there shouldn't be racial profiling or discrimination.

message 73: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 2 comments It’s an incredibly important book that creates pause for all readers.

message 74: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Kaisen (leighkaisen) | 1 comments This book is important now for offering a perspective to readers that can expand views of what is happening in our world and create awareness of prejudice in our nation and offer a call to action to raise our voices for justice in our communities.

Because right now we are in the sad position of believing we are free and that everything that previous generations have won is guaranteed to last forever (see the right to have a safe abortion, for instance). Many people like to quote "we have equality now what more do you want?" but it isn't true is it? Black people are still targeted by the US police, I think this book can be more relevant than ever.

message 76: by Marissa (new)

Marissa I would love to win The Hate U Give because I feel it explains extremely pressing & relevant topics in today’s society. This book has been in my TBR for a quite a while. I’m so excited to read it.

message 77: by Kate (new)

Kate Sokley (thelibraryofkate) We live in a world where this is no longer fiction, but Day to Day life for so many people in our communities. How can we grow without trying to understand their points of view?

message 78: by Mama X (new)

Mama X (mamax) | 7 comments With incidents like this happening often, it is enlightening to read a story that brings the problem to light. Learning about cultural differences, both race and class, is very important so that we can find ways to overcome these problems.

message 79: by Tine (new)

Tine | 1 comments Living overseas, we hear a lot about the whole political police vs African americans, but not a lot from the latters side. I would love to read this book and educate myself about the perspectives of other people. I’ve heard so many great things about this one!

message 80: by Sam (new)

Sam I think this book is important to read now because of how divided people are when it comes to race-related issues. I think it’s necessary for us to read from authors with different backgrounds and different perspectives so that we are better able to understand each other. I also think a book like this is a great way to start a conversation with people in order to teach them about police violence against African Americans.

message 81: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (mimjarvis) | 1 comments Because it's sadly such a relevant topic today and we need to spread awareness and stop this from happening. It's a book with an extremely powerful and important message that needs to be read.

message 82: by Lori (new)

Lori (greeneyedgurl) | 1 comments I think it’s important for me to read now personally because I live and teach in a predominantly African American community. Thanks for the chance!

message 83: by Yana (new)

Yana (nurliyanaahmad) | 1 comments Every human that breath (not authoritative figure alone) should treat everyone else as a human being - with respect. No human deserves discrimination, & definitely not by their physical appearances. African-American being mistreated by the police is just one of the ethnic discriminations that are happening worldwide. It's important to acknowledge this as a very important issue and start seeing the whole population in a more humane way.

message 84: by Elise (new)

Elise | 3 comments It’s important because it’s a perspective different from my own.

message 85: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 4 comments It’s important because there is power in this world that is abused. It has happened all throughout history and will continue to happen. When it does happen, we need to learn how to conquer it and build something better.

message 86: by Bárbara (new)

Bárbara We live in a world dominated by hate and violence. As an 18 year old just starting out her life now, I don’t feel like I have any power to change the world or even have any impact on it, on people. Because of that feeling of impotence, I am absolutely terrified everyday of what will happen, not only to those around me, but in the world. Unfortunately, we have come to a point where that worry is not even recognized or “worth it” anymore, because something horrible will surely happen every single day.
This book is important, as well as any other book, message, speech or form of expression because in a world dominated by hatred, we have to keep being optimistic, innocent and naive to think that there’s still a way to change the reality we live in. Because it’s when that hope disappears, it’s when these books stop existing, and we stop recognizing the problems in our society that need to be fixed, that we lose ourselves to the bitter, unfair behavior of humankind.

message 87: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 0 comments Our country is in denial about the depth of our existing racism. Our leadership is creating revisionist history and vilifying people who speak truth to power.

We need to hear the voice and perspectives in The Hate You Give.

We need to know better so we can do better. We must demand better from our leaders.

To do so effectively, we must have our eyes open to realty beyond our personal, limited experiences.

For those who live this reality, they deserve a voice.

message 88: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 2 comments The Hate U Give is important to read now because it is relevant. It tells a story of what is happening today in the United States.

message 89: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 4 comments The society we live in unfortunately continues to show us why books like this are relevant and necessary. The hope is that we learn and grow from this reality to a newer, safer, and more just world.

Sheryl_at_Ubookquitous (ubookquitous) This book is an accurate, important story about the still rampant racism that exists - not just in the obvious shooting incident but in the myriad of systemic roadblocks Star and others face as well as the microagressions face daily. This should be a standard in schools!

message 91: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 8 comments This book is not only needed and necessary, but it is just good! There are so many "important" reads out there that broaden our social awareness and understandng, but not all of them are un-putdownable. I did not want this book to end.

message 92: by Belinda (new)

Belinda | 3 comments This subject matter is just so important for what is going on in our country today. Would love for our book club to read and discuss!

message 93: by Liv (new)

Liv | 2 comments I believe this book is important due to today’s climate. Just yesterday in the news, it was reported that teens that are people of color are arrested at rate of almost 6 times more than their white peers. The relationship between law enforcement and people of color is extremely turbulent. Something needs to change to save lives, not only physically but also in terms quality. Arrest records follow you and impact your future opportunities.

message 94: by Janine (new)

Janine McNamara | 4 comments The Hate U Give is vital at this crucial time in history in order to bring awareness to police brutality, racism, systemic oppression, and to focus the lens on the African American experience in the United States during a time of what is believed to be great technological progression and enlightened thinking but underlying this is great inequality, brutality, and lack of civil rights. A powerful light needs to continue to shine on the fact that this really is not the land of the free, and I believe The Hate U Give helps to do this in a powerful way.

message 95: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mandy1892) | 3 comments It's important to understand the background and origin of fear for every young African American teen in our social climate today. To be black in America is to be a target of contradicting ideals every day. "To serve and protect" is what police do, but some may be torn by their upbringings and by stigma that exists about black Americans. That uncertainty, that little memory of someone saying negative about a cultural and racial community, in general, speaks at the wrong moment and that's when people make mistakes. It's very important to educate our youth by sharing stories like Star's- these are the stories that will teach humanity and compassion when others may say otherwise.

message 96: by Kate (new)

Kate TerHaar Implicit bias is real and most people do not realize it exists. This book helps us see what we have within us and hopefully change. Also, power/authority is not always right nor does it exempt from consequences of the law.

message 97: by Adriana (new)

Adriana M. (ailovecafe) | 3 comments It's important to educate the present and future generations about discrimination in all its forms. By reading about these experiences, people can learn how to act or speak up against these discriminatory actions, making less silence and creating more support for those discriminated against.

message 98: by Tati (new)

Tati Oliveira (tati_oliveira) | 4 comments I believe it's important to everybody realize how things really are, how things haven't change as mush as we think. A book is a very good way to show that, especially for young people and people from different countries. Till recently I didnt realize that this sort of thing still happened in countries like the US

message 99: by Elisabetta (new)

Elisabetta | 2 comments The Hate You Give is an important read in the current socio-political climate, especially for young people because it gives an insight into the power dynamics of our society and the struggle and fear people of colour face.

message 100: by Aisha (new)

Aisha Ayoosh It provides an insight into the lives of various people of all ages, genders and races of how discrimination is affecting them from the inside.
