SunnySkies | 1 comments Read a book years ago, not super clear on the details. It was a library book in the late 90's or early 2000's. It seems like it might have been an older book even then. Not near-future, but space travel, space ships, other planets. Different planet, society. Psychic powers are forbidden/hunted. The MC develops and hides them. It seems like the MC (or his parent?) had clairvoyance of a spaceship not coming back, someone dying while away on a space voyage. At one point MC goes to a library to look for info but gets spooked. He's some kind of military/cop job. One person knows/suspects his powers. Sent to another planet to investigate (hunt?) a missing person (fugitive?) with powers. Planet is mostly empty. Windy. Finds the young man's sister and dog. There might have been a romance thread with the sister?

Potential Spoilers: the psychic-power-having person he was sent to find can jump bodies, is at one point in the dog, then at the end in another person. Fakes his death. It turns out there is some weird aliens dying out that are helping/teaching the people on the planet with their powers. At the very end he goes back (temporarily?) to his original planet and tells his (mentor?) about his powers.

I've thought that they called the people with powers "beyonds" or something like that, but I could be misremembering that bit. (Could be misremembering lots of details, it's been quite some time since I read the book, but I've never been able to find it again.)

SunnySkies, are you still looking for this or did you find it?

Ky | 449 comments This sounds like The Beyond by Jean Sutton. Sent by the Social Administration of the Federation, Alek Selby goes to the planet Engo to investigate a spaceship captain's tale of telekinetic (or psychokinetic, the word used in the novel) activity. Any kind of psychic ability is illegal in the Federation.

On Engo, he meets Lora, Lora's younger brother Johnny, and Johnny's dog Rok. The spaceship captain had seen Johnny playing fetch with Rok, and the stick levitated in the air at one point. (view spoiler)

There are very ancient aliens on a distant planet helping anybody with psychic ability teleport to that planet, beyond the Federation's reach, so that the aliens can teach their ways to psychic humans.

So could this be your book, SunnySkies?
