Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments i wasn't going to reread this buuuuut it's so short and seanan is so amazing. anyway i got up to the end of chapter 4 today. and i just absolutely love this world, it's pure genius because she has basically taken EVERY fantasy world and mashed them all up together [in a way that actually makes sense no less] so she can literally do anything with it. I love Seanan's imagination.

also really love the part about why there are so few boys at the school. i think the quote about how 'we notice the silence of men. we depend on the silence of women' is probably my favorite line in the whole book.

will probably post more thoughts tonight but it's hard for me not to get ahead of myself since i've read them all before lol

I think he has two reading personalities, one who reads fiction and fantasy to live over again his world, and the second one reads non-fiction - to understand the real world (view spoiler)

oh I'm sorry, I did see your previous post, I just thought we waited for other people's thoughts x) I won't have much time on Sunday (or Monday even, I just realized), so it would be great if we could start on Saturday...?

is this okay for everyone? - I will take longer reading #2 and won't rush through it in two days like with #1, so it will be okay if some of you only joined in a couple of days later (if you're even interested in continuing the series)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments i personally feel like it's better to space them out more but then again i've read them already so i don't have the same sense of urgency i guess lol but i'm fine with whatever. i can only do the first 2 though bc i read the 3rd one earlier this year so it won't count for me for tower teams :(

I agree on everything you say. This book convinced me of the genius of Seanan McGuire. It's truly fascinating how she analysed and described each of the worlds, whilst not passing any judgement on them. Every world is amazing in its own way. Like an underworld where you wouldn't expect to like, she was able to make us understand why and how Nancy was able to feel at home there. I love the way she classifies them too; nonsensical vs high-logical. Amazingly well done.

Whilst reading it I couldn't help but think about all the portal fantasy I've read and watched. Particularly I thought of The Magicians TV show. And I kept comparing the worlds described with the ones in these books/tv-shows.

ClaireB | 4265 comments I have a fun little question for you all !

There are many kinds of doors described in the books: it goes from an actual door to mirrors like in Alice in Wonderland. What kind of door are you most likely to go through?

Personally, I think a portal I'm most likely to fall into, and I don't think it was mentioned in this novella, would be if it was in a book; like actually being absorbed into the book.

message 71: by Dev (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments @Claire one of my favorite things about seanan is that she really can write just about any pov and make it believable. and she can write characters that you have like nothing in common with at all and would not normally be able to relate to but she just makes them so unique and real that you find yourself totally relating anyway. she's just really great.

also yeah it kind of makes you take all your favorite books / tv shows and try to classify them by the rules set out here so that's pretty fun.

message 72: by Dev (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments and i'm not really sure what kind of a world i would want to go into. a lot of the separations that are used in this series are very rigid, like a place will either be very bleak or very colorful, it will either be very logical or completely ridiculous, and for me that would just get boring having everything so far skewed in one direction all the time. i mean i love jack and jill's world bc they basically just fell into a victorian horror dracula/frankenstein world, but also i love the bright colorful nonsensical worlds too because it really just depends on what kind of mood i'm in as to where i would feel like i 'belong'. and like nancy is always so still and sometimes i am totally still but sometimes i'm pacing around and can't settle so idk ...i need some kind of really out there world that combines it all somehow lol

Elen | 1274 comments I could not stop reading as well, it's so fascinating and you just can't put the book away. Btw, I finished this book too.
Omg, Seanan can truly write really complex and different worlds in one shortish book. I don't even have words to describe my feelings. I have to read her other books too now.

Devann, as I understood you have read some her book, what would you recommend?

While I find all the worlds she describes fascinating, I don't know if I'd like to go in any of them. lol. Especially not in a nonsensical world. They sound really interesting. But I don't think my sanity would survive. I like logic. haha

message 78: by Dev (last edited May 17, 2018 01:36PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments @Elen um ...literally all of them lol. i know that's not particularly helpful but i have read all of her book and i liked every single one and haven't rated any of them below 3 stars so i guess it just depends on what you want?

incryptid and october daye are similar in that they are both longer ongoing series and are both urban fantasy. october daye focuses on fairies and is also kind of a detective series as she's usually trying to solve some kind of crime. incryptid focuses on a human family that protects cryptids so there are a lot of different kind of creatures and currently there are 7 books [3 for verity, 2 for Antimony, and 2 for ...their brother. i forget his name lol]. october daye has the same protag throughout. ghost roads is also urban fantasy and it's about ghosts [duh] and there's only one book of that out with another coming this year so that might be a good place to dip your toes in? that one isn't one of my favorites just because i don't like rose as much as verity or toby but it's still a really good story.

then under mira grant she writes newsflesh [zombies / reporters] and parasitology [uh ...sciency ...thriller ...horror?] which are both really good. i hate zombie stuff but i love newsflesh because she has made such a believable world and really put a lot of thought into how zombies would affect people in different areas of life beyond just oh no run away lol. parasitology honestly was a bit much for me at times bc there is some medical horror going on but still a very good series.

she's got some standalones too. final girls was not my favorite because for once she didn't really sell me on the world and i couldn't suspend my disbelief, but ymmv. uh ...there was one that came out last year ...boneyard! it was a standalone in a series that is apparently based off some tabletop game? but you don't need any background for it and it's like a wild west horror thing which is great.

oh and rolling in the deep is another sciency one with really awesome killer mermaids. honestly i just love everything she does, she is so amazing.

oh!!! and i almost forgot the velveteen vs. series which is about superheroes and like ...ok look no offense to any marvel fans but it's like civil war but if civil war was actually good lol. there's a lot to do with superhero marketing and like what defines hero vs. villain which is really great.

so ...yeah. she's awesome. read all her stuff lol i am like her one woman marketing team in this post XD

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments @Claire to me even the nonsense worlds have a lot of logic because like ...there ARE still rules and idk it makes sense to me but i guess maybe not to someone like nancy. but you see more of that in the third book so i don't want to spoil anything now!

yes yes yes, everything you said! "Underworld" sounds so definite, like we all know what to expect more or less, but the fact that Seanan McGuire devides in so many different parts of underworlds, and it all makes sense! it's absolutely beautiful!

I would probably be sucked into a Nonsense world? I always need to have something in my hands... if it isn't my phone or a book or whatever, it's food. so I always have to distract myself to keep myself from eating x) therefore I wouldn't do well in the Underworld either - I love food, I need to eat!!!

So I finished part one (chapters 1-3) and I agree with everyone else. The whole idea of Nonsense, Logic, Wickedness & Virtue is so interesting ; the gender imbalance in the house ; and just the whole Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children feel about the book.

Then stepping into chapter four

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments @Christina well i think it was only that particular underworld where they didn't really eat so there is probably an underworld where everyone is eating all the time or something and you could go there lol eat always and never gain a pound because you're dead! thats the great thing about this series - there is literally infinite worlds!

but would dead people eat? I don't think they'd still feel hunger, or thirst, for that matter. unless they're a zombie :P and that would be scary as hell (no pun intended), and I get scared easily! but skeletons definitely don't eat...

message 92: by Dev (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments well you're applying an awful lot of logic there so maybe there's a nonsense underworld where they can eat 'because reasons' lol

Christina (chrissy__) | 3013 comments Devann wrote: "well you're applying an awful lot of logic there so maybe there's a nonsense underworld where they can eat 'because reasons' lol"

maybe they'd want me in Logic then ... (I think I'd even prefer Logic, I get frustrated when things are all over the place and don't make sense x))

message 94: by Dev (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments yeah, honestly my opinion is that you can make ANYTHING make sense if you just think about it long enough so that kind of makes nonsense wrap around into logic, which makes it hard for me to separate the two concepts. but for the sake of the book i understand and accept what she's doing with it.
