Camille Moranno | 1 comments I just finished I'll be gone in the dark. I wanted to know if anyone has read the Steven King book "the outsider"?? I wonder if Peter has and if he will add it to the list. Best book I've ever read, in the "thriller" category.

Michelle (chellatrix) | 32 comments Hey, Camille, I'd love us to do something by Stephen King. I really liked The Outsider.

If I could suggest a Stephen King book, I think I would pick Different Seasons -- 4 stories and at least 3 were made into movies.

Or maybe Carrie since it was his first published novel and is a classic King. :)

Sandy Mcneal | 22 comments I’m almost finished with The Outsider by Stephen King and I can’t put it down. I’m listening to it on audible In the car and reading the book at home. I would recommend The Stand but it’s just such a commitment due to the size.

Well I’m off to read before bed I hope to start this months Peter’s Book club selection by the weekend.

Happy Wednesday everyone.

Sandy

Michelle (la_medusa) I'm due to reread Carrie.

I think The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon might be good for this book club. Or maybe Gerald's Game.

My favorite is The Stand, but no one wants to read a 1000+ page novel for a book club lol.

message 56: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (52gatos) | 73 comments i love the stand, probably my favorite book ever. 11/22/63 is another amazing King novel. However, these are huuuuge books, and i doubt most people will want to tackle.

message 57: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (la_medusa) I liked Under the Dome too. It was such a quick read.

Who'd think anyone could say that about a trillion page tome?

message 58: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Cann (jekacann) | 27 comments I would love to read a good long book!!! Shocker...but I've never read a Stephen King book at all. I've watched It. It terrified me when I was a kid. I am planning to read that one as well as others by him though.

Fela Velez (islandandbooks) | 5 comments I wasn't sure about giving The Outsiders a try but after reading all of your thoughts, I'm going to try and get it this weekend.

message 60: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (52gatos) | 73 comments my mom has under the dome and hasn’t touched it. guess i’m snatching it from her next time i’m over there haha!

Sandy Mcneal | 22 comments I finished The Outsider today and was not disappointed. I highly recommend the audio version if you can, it was an experience. I liked it so much I picked up Mr. Mercedes. Guess I’ll be reading on two books this weekend.

Someone said they haven’t read Stephen King... IT terrorized me and I couldn’t finish it. Just No. LOL but The Stand is one of my all time favorites, along with Tommy Knockers and Needful Things. I hope you enjoy King’s writing.

Is anyone else ready for the weekend. This has been a long, long week.

Jessica Cann (jekacann) | 27 comments I'm terrified of clowns because of the movie IT lol. It was probably a horrible idea to watch it so young. But I refuse to see the new one 😂😂. For some reason I can deal more with books than I can with movies. I want to read IT bc I've heard such good things about it but I'm scared to try and read it lol.

I'm just ready for the rain to stop around here. But I am excited about having some time to clean and read in peace this weekend.

IT is my favorite King novel, and I've watched both versions of the films multiple times now. I haven't read Pet Sematary yet, and I've heard a lot of fans say that is the one that scared them the most.

I plan to read it for the summer reading challenge. It'll be my campfire choice bc I'm pretty sure it will scare the crap out of me lol.

Sassy Sarah Reads | 14 comments OMG A Stephen King conversation! I love King and I have had a weird past with him. I read him too young and a lot of his books went over my head, but reading him as an adult, he is hands down my favorite author. The Stand is my favorite by him, but I don't think that's the place to start with him because it's so large. If you aren't familiar with him I would recommend his novellas or short stories. Different Seasons and Full Dark, No Stars aren't his usual paranormal stories. There are horror and questionable times of sanity combined with horror in Full Dark, No Stories, so if that's your style go for that one. If you want creepy crawly then go with Night Shift. It's his first short story collection and it has a ton of gems. IT also traumatized me growing up and I'm currently rereading IT. I read the book when I was twelve and years before that at a sleepover my friend's stepsister pretended to be possessed by IT. Also, someone who likes The Tommyknockers! Everyone seems to dislike that one but it has aliens and it is just so fun!

I am terrified of clowns but I love IT the novel as well as both movies. The mini series was fantastic and I thought the Movie was great. The fact that I am afraid of clowns made it even scarier!

I am torn between IT and The Stand as being my favorite Stephen King Novels.

Jessica Cann (jekacann) | 27 comments I'm a big wuss since I've gotten older when it comes to horror movies. You would think it would be the other way around lol. I feel like my mind doesn't take me to the scary depths like movies can.

In my teens and twenties, I watched horror movies like crazy and without flinching. Now? Fingers over eyes, peeking through the gap.

I read IT when I was eleven! So awesome to meet someone who also read it when they were young :D.

message 70: by Jen (new)

Jen (jncahill) If we're going for the chunkier SK books, should probably have longer than two weeks. lol. King fan as well but I think Peter and new-to-King readers would do better with a shorter book first.

I always recommend Carrie, Firestarter, Misery, Pet Sematary, or short story collections for beginners. People who aren't such horror fans may enjoy Gwendy's Button Box or The Green Mile. The Mr. Mercedes books are fun and more horror/crime.

message 71: by Sandy (new)

Sandy Mcneal | 22 comments I’m reading Mr. Mercedes after putting it off for years. I am really enjoying it. Believe it not, I couldn’t wrap my head around a book titled Mr. Mercedes. I should have just believed in the magic. It’s really good.

Jem Sopp | 9 comments Hi Everyone! This may be a really stupid question but please bear with me because I'm a book club virgin. Are the dates next to the book titles when you're supposed to start reading the books or when they need to be read by? I've always wanted to be part of a book club and can't wait to get started!

Emmie.Reads.Books | 95 comments Jem wrote: "Hi Everyone! This may be a really stupid question but please bear with me because I'm a book club virgin. Are the dates next to the book titles when you're supposed to start reading the books or wh..."

Hi! The dates beside each book are the start date for those books. So for instance, we start Endless Night by Richard Laymon next Sunday (June 10). Peter scheduled two weeks for each book, and he usually does a live bookchat once the time period for that book is over for everyone to discuss it. I hope you enjoy the book club!! :)

I started reading Uncle Stevie's stuff at about 13 or 14. I remember a lot of my fellow teenagers lugging his big ol' books around school too.

YA wasn't really a thing until I was in my mid to late 20's. (Twilight-era, when "young adult" became a buzz word.)

So some of us geezers had to cut our teeth on stronger stuff.

I skipped to King after dabbling in some Fear Street and Christopher Pike. I was the only student lugging around IT in middle school, but I was so proud to carry it around with my noodle arms. Then I went back to YA because I kind of got burned out. It was weird, but I did enjoy the King I read when I was younger. I started reading him again as a senior in high school and have been reading him since. :D

Sassy Sarah Reads | 14 comments ENDLESS NIGHT by Richard Laymon was 99 cents on Kindle in the American Amazon today! I don't know how long it'll be like that or if it's a forever price, but I just thought I'd share since the 10th is quickly approaching!

Jen (jncahill) Seems Laymon's books are difficult to find. I managed to find a copy on Thrift Books and another book of his in a thrift store but none of the libraries near me or Overdrive have any of his stuff.

message 80: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (52gatos) | 73 comments same here, nothing from my library or overdrive. i found my copy on thrift books as well.

Emmie.Reads.Books | 95 comments J.N. wrote: "Seems Laymon's books are difficult to find. I managed to find a copy on Thrift Books and another book of his in a thrift store but none of the libraries near me or Overdrive have any of his stuff."

It looks like a bunch of his stuff is really cheap for Kindle (US) right now. Endless Night is only $0.99 right now as are a lot of his other works.

message 82: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (la_medusa) Another vote for: "wasn't at any of my library branches, had to get it from thrift books."

I wonder why.

Kinda sucks, because this isn't a book I really need to own. My shelves are already overstuffed. And I know I'll just hoard it for the memories once I'm done.

Ooooh. That's good to know.

LittleDeadRedGoddessPersephone | 30 comments I have Kindle Unlimited so I am just getting it from there for nothing. I am reading another e- book so I will have to jump back and forth between the two! I am looking forward reading "Endless Night" which is funny since I think Peter mentioned something about cannibalism which is the one thing that really, really grosses me out besides vomit.

message 87: by Ginny (new)

Ginny Grzech | 3 comments I am able to read this current book for free with Kindle Unlimited so this will be nice the first one I get to read since the book club was started. I was so confused that my library didn't have either of the past 2. Oh well at least I am on the mark now. Hope everyone is having a great day and Happy Fathers day.
