Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) Alright. 678 page book coming up! Is that fat enough?

message 1152: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
Fabulous!! Thanks :-D

Astronomy books are rewarded 0.02 points per page so your 678 page book is going to give us a few more points than the books we currently have slotted in for that class.

Natasha | 1140 comments I finally finished Playing with Fire (Tales of an Extraordinary Girl, #1) by Gena Showalter . So glad that's over!

Woooh! You did it, Natasha!!

message 1155: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments I finished it because I really wanted to master the charms class and we did!

Yes, we did!! :-D

Classes Mastered:

Astronomy
Charms
Defence Against the Dark Arts
Divination
Herbology
Transfiguration

======

What is left:

Arithmancy:
- Kathleen is almost done with her chunkster for 901+ pages.
- LaurLa will read hers in July.

Care of Magical Creatures:
- one more book for the body (Natasha mentioned the possibility of a horse?)
- a name for our fabulous creature (yes, we do get points for this)

Potions
- cauldron (Em is currently reading for this.)
- scale (Cathy has one coming up for this.)

======

Astronomy can still be buffed a little! So if you have a book with a celestial object other than sun/moon/stars/neptune/northern lights in the title with a lot of pages... ;-)

And of course, we need to write our History of Magic essay (7 books).

Annalisa and Kathleen, would you two like to work on this together?

Also, V Nerd, you used to be good with writing gory stuff for our massacre challenges... want to join these two for a bit of crazy creative writing?

Kathleen should be back from her trip soon, I think?!

So anything not marked as used and without a note next to it is up for grabs and you can juggle those around as you see fit. I trust you to make it awesome :-)

(With LaurLa being on vacation, this is your moment to steal aaaaall her books :-p)

Natasha | 1140 comments I'm going to the library tomorrow (I have overdue books to return) so I'll look for a book with a horse tail on it for our magical creature.

message 1159: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments History of magic should probably be something I attempt over the weekend. However, i do have a middle of the week holiday. I'm good to write or co-write something. Are books with difficult letters U, I, X marked? I wouldn't want to take one that is hard to replaced even if it isn't placed yet.

message 1160: by Em (new)

Em (emmolga) for Astronomy, would it be okay for me to take up Don Quixote since there is an asteroid named after it, or would that be stretching it too much haha

If you can't find one, don't worry about it, I have a few horse books lying around. I'm sure I can squeeze one of those in somewhere :-)

Yep, U/I/X are all marked on the spreadsheet - there is a note in the I column. There aren't that many, and for most of the I's, it's pretty obvious since it's the title.

Thanks :-)

Hahaha, now that is a good question!

Honestly, I kind of love that idea :-)

And asteroids have been approved as celestial objects. Besides in the description of the class itself it says that the homework assigned by Professor Sinistra often included learning the names of stars, asteroids.....

I'd say, go for it!

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments Are you sure northern lights work for astronomy? Aren't those connected to atmosphere and not to space?
(It's been reeeeaaaaally long since I've studied this so I might be completely wrong!)

message 1168: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I think they are an atmospheric occurrence as well.

message 1169: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) If we aren't sure, then I don't want to take the chance.

message 1170: by Eldarwen (new)

Hmm, if you put it that way. I only know there are various particles involved in their occurrence.

But I guess the fact that it is an occurrence rather than a more permanent thing like starlight.. (Yep, thinking out loud here.)

Mmhh, sorry Stacie, but Tea is right. Might be better not to go with that one.

As I said it was supposed to be quidditch book so I wasn't keeping track of who is in the book.

Great!

Yeah, that's why I read over the list and went back to my own review, which didn't mention him, buuuut that's what amazon's Look Inside feature comes in handy for hehe. Couldn't quite remember if it was this one or next. Since Ian isn't in all of them, I think?! And I wasn't sure how long it's been since LaurLa read them so .. yeah ;-)

I'm starting to ramble, so I should probably head to bed haha. And try and read a few more pages in Red Sister - so so far behind and the new BOM started today *sigh* so slow, so slow. And instead of reading Red Sister yesterday as I actually wanted to do, I read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which I shouldn't have done. It upset me :-p At least it's another book crossed off the TBR and an additional BR.

Right, REALLY going to bed now haha.

G'night!

No, sky doesn't work as it isn't an actual celestial object.

message 1182: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I was hoping I would find something naturally. However the only book I have is Seduce me at Sunrise and it is only 360 pages. I'm guessing it should be longer than that. Is there a celestial object that would work for Feast or Crow? A Feast for Crows is over 1,000 pages and that would really help if there was. I'll have to do some research tomorrow.

Or maybe Gemina is a celestial object. That's 659pages. I think I may have checked because being set in space I was hopeful the title would be a space object.

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments I'm back!! 😊

The Luminaries in hardcover is 848 pages. Will luminaries work for astronony?

Wikipedia says...
The luminaries were what traditional astrologers called the two astrological "planets" which were the brightest and most important objects in the heavens, that is, the Sun and the Moon.

Unfortunately 360 is lower than most of the books we already have (if only very little) so the sunrise one wouldn't improve the points for the class.

Feast or Crow.. not that I know. There's a raven constellation (Corvus) but that isn't the same despite crows being mentioned in the explanation somewhere.

Gemina won't work either, I don't think. The constellation is Gemini so unfortunately not the same.

But this is all just after quick checking and (very) minimal memory of school.

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett is huge. I'm not sure I would volunteer for it. I think I may have come across a few more with earth in the title as well.

We are looking for over 500page books, right?

Hey Natasha,

Ella Enchanted and The Tale of Nefret were both used for Quidditch, right?

Could you please post a quick completion post for all your Quidditch books? Just read date and page numbers.

Thanks!

message 1193: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments If we want to master Astronomy we need 120 points that means the books need to give us 17 to 18 points each. That means we need to be looking for books that are at least 826 pages long. Really to bad A Feast for Crows doesn't work.

message 1194: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I just noticed that Phoenix is a constellation. Is anyone reading the 5th Harry Potter book?

message 1195: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I should really get off of the internet and get things done. However, I wanted to see what other teams had read for celestial objects, I noticed that the "Class Mastered" function of the spreadsheets was different for all of the Slythern Houses than it was for the other houses. I'm not sure if that was on purpose or not. The others say "Class Mastered" when there are 7 books read. For most of the Slythern houses it is when there is a total of 120 points. However, one of the Slythern houses was 44 points. Thought I would mention it since I noticed.

i've found that the full moon is sometimes also referred to as crow moon or full crow moon. this might be reeeaaally stretching it, though? would it be okay to read The Feast of Crow even though there's only crow in the title, or should the title contain the complete term?

ETA: also i'm not too sure since the term is referring to a phase of the moon... and not the name of the moon itself. i'll try to research some more.

No, no 120 points needed. It's a formula copy/paste thing that didn't get changed.

We only need to read 7 books.

Don't think that would work since, as you said, it's a phase of the moon and not the actual celestial object itself.
Besides, if it did work, I think you would need the actual expression in the title and not just a part of it.

Nice try though! :-)
