Em (emmolga) i ended up reading mine since i couldn't seem to get my hands on any thicker ones, but if you feel like reading it, Natasha, i'd also say go for it!

sorry i haven't been around much, work has been quite hectic this week.

Natasha wrote: "That's fine. I didn't know that. Half of it is poetry and the other half are literary essays if that makes any difference."

Unfortunately it doesn't make a difference since it's still considered a poetry book. But oh well, I hope you enjoyed it at least! :-)

Ah you finished, cool!

Completion Post please! Also, if you could put the book as read and with a date onto your TT shelf that'd be great, thanks :-)

message 1104: by Em (new)

Em (emmolga) done, E! now i can move on to my cauldron book, which i hope i can finish sometime this week. then i'd have more chance to participate in more BRs, my firsts have been quite fun :)

also, good luck and have fun to all of you who participate in the Quidditch match!

Thanks, Em!

Also, you did good with the MCs from the short stories :-)

message 1106: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments So finally got Playing with Fire (Tales of an Extraordinary Girl, #1) by Gena Showalter checked out to me. I'll be reading that along with my books for Quidditch so it may take me longer to finish that.

Stacie

could you please check Instant Temptation?
The edition you shelved has a different page count than what you wrote in the completion post.

Thank you! :-)

Will do!

message 1113: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) It should be 273. I don't know what the heck I was doing when I wrote the other count. Do you need me to update over there?

message 1114: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
No no, all good. I usually go off what is on the shelf anyway, but prefer to double-check.
Letting me know here is enough for me :-)

Thanks!

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments E, please change my 901+ book to The Way of Kings. I'm almost done but I'm leaving tomorrow for a weekend trip and I won't be bringing the book. It's heavy!

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
Sure thing!

Annalisa, you were right. Wizard of Earthsea is suuuuch slow (and incredibly passive) reading. But it isn't a bad book. It just takes me ages to slog through the writing style.

message 1118: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments Would you read the second book? I don't think I will because I just didn't care for the writing at all.

message 1119: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
At the moment, I'm thinking no. The writing just isn't engaging enough for me. And while the same can be said for stories like Narnia, those still read much easier and nicer than this.

message 1120: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
Besides, for the first three chapters, the main character was a bit of an arrogant ass, despite being really young.

message 1121: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I have to agree. Sparrow Hawk is a bit of arrogant. He wasn't a character I really liked. I think Yarrow was the only character I really liked at all. I wonder if those reading the second book will find it moves quicker, but I'm not curious enough to read the second book.

message 1122: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
Maybe you could just head over to the BR thread once it starts and see what they think about it instead. Someone might comment on the pacing and writing.

It's just weird. High fantasy stories or those more oriented towards the younger generation are often written in this kind of style, and yet I enjoy them much more and feel far more engaged.

message 1123: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments That's a good idea. I always hear good things about her books and I really like her children's books when I was young but like you said this one didn't work for me. I would like to know if the series gets better as it progresses.

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments One of her books, Lavinia, is a favorite of mine. It's not popular but I really liked it.

message 1125: by Natasha (last edited Jun 29, 2018 11:42AM) (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments I'm a third of the way through Playing with Fire and it's painful. The main character is currently getting jealous since the man who kidnapped her (who she wants to have sex with) has a female friend. Apparently, and I quote, "after all, men and women can't be friends without sleeping together. Just a fact of life." And she also considers her kidnapper her property. I've wanted to throw my phone (reading it on the Kindle app) a number of times. I'll still finish it though.

message 1126: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
Eh..... that sounds like an incredibly terrible book!! o.O

Are you sure you want to finish it?

Of course, rants about crappy books make for fabulous reviews hehe, but still, you don't have to force yourself through it if you don't want to :-)

message 1127: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments It's easy enough to read though stupid. I can read it on my computer or read a few minutes here and there. Plus it's so perfect for the fire making spell that I want to finish it.

can you put Real Vampires Don't Sparkle on your TT shelf please?

Thanks!

message 1130: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments We are getting very close to having all the books we need to complete classes and spells. We have 72 books that haven't been used for something yet, 78 books left for spells, and 14 for classes.

I think I saw an ARC that could finish Divination. I thought I might try and read something that was missing. However, I really want to read something mindless and I don't think I have a book that fits any of the class spaces that are open.

message 1131: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
Mindless books can work really well for spells though! :-)
(Or it might be an interesting title for History of Magic?)

Also, guys, if you want to go through the unused books to see if you can work out an essay for History of Magic - go for it!! :-D

If you want to read for specific books, here is what you can hunt down:

A fat book that works for astronomy so we can replace some of our lower page counts - and if they have a different celestial object in the title than the ones we already have, it would be even better. So preferably not: sun, moon, star(s) as we already have two each of those.

We need one more ARC for divination.

For Spells: Any book that fits for U - title, author, character. There are a large number of Us floating around in those spells and it is a rather elusive letter.

message 1133: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I'm not sure if you are saving this ARC books for some reason, but it isn't used for something yet.

I think I Love You link is to the completion post.

Nice catch! Didn't see Stacie's note at the bottom. Figured we'd use it for one of those I's we still need.

Thanks :-)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I am currently reading a book that will work for an i. I'm not sure how many are left at this point.

LaurLa is going on vacation now and she'll update latest when she gets back. She'll let us know then what is still needed :-)

What we certainly need more of is U. For I, we might be nearing the amount needed.

message 1137: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I don't know if any of my upcoming buddy reads or fun read have U. I will keep an eye out.

That was the last one we needed - just something to keep in mind so you don't have to squeeze an extra one in if it doesn't fit with other challenges :-)

Keep those books coming, ladies!! :-D I love it hehe.

Couple of things:

Stacie - duly noted, thanks! I put a smudge of colour onto the spreadsheet so I won't forget that there's something to check.

Sunshine - can you please put They Both Die at the End on your TT shelf? Thanks!

Sunshine - for Take, the book on your shelf has a different page number than the number you put in your completion post. Can you please check and let me know? Thanks!

V - the edition of Part-Time Lover on your shelf doesn't have page numbers. Purpose or no? Can you please check and let me know? Thanks!
(Psssst, and Tattooist needs a read date, but you're still updating so... hehe)

I'm only doing two challenges other than this one right now! GASP!! It gives me some freedom with what to read which is both helpful and not.

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) Can the word be embedded? Like moonstone or moonlight?

message 1149: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) Also, what about Northern Lights? Will that count? If so, I have a 678 pager I can read

message 1150: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
As for embedded words, yes, they work to a certain extent. As long as the embedded word still relates to a celestial objects, it's fine. Words such as "sunday" (sun is a celestial object after all) would not work.

"Stardust" and "Starlight" have been given as acceptable examples of objects existing in the universe, i.e. being celestial objects.

By that same logic, northern lights should work.
