If I start Children of Blood and Bone on the 12th, I'll get points for page and BOM participation... right?I'll be reading Magic Binds for another challenge so might as well join the BR for it here in NBRC. It is 30 pts after all, now I just hope someone from another house joins. OR else it's goodbye 30 pts!
Yes, Sonia accepted that as a possibility. The DQ will just have to be answered within a month of the start of the BOM, so basically, you'll have to answer them before the end of this month.

I'm pretty sure someone will join. You could always ask in the prechallenge chat? Maybe someone was thinking about it but not sure if someone else was going to participate?

Just popping in to say hi.
No, sorry Kathleen, just the book points for this one as the BOM started before Towers.
Yey! I'll start on the 12th then so I can get page pts.So, I just made a realization. BR gives 30 pts! So, I shall buddy read all books I plan to read this TT round. Haha it amounts to more points!

hmmm, missed that post Sorry.
Alright, Kathleen (and Cat hehe), here's your official answer:
1) If you joined the BOM discussion of the book and/or write DQ's BEFORE Tower Teams starts, then you get just writing DQ's and or answering DQ's points.
2) If you start the book after Tower Teams starts and before June 2nd, and answer DQ's, then you'll get the correspondent book points and participation points.

I like that plan.
I like that plan.
Thanks for the clarification E!I knew there was a reason I kept putting off reading Children of Blood and Bone despite the hype surrounding it.
Last question before I go sleep (I'd say I promise but then I am in Slytherin House afterall hah!). For the spell it out, which would you you prefer? Claiming letters beforehand or read and then captains can just adjust books accordingly?
Welcome, Kathleen!
Ah, I don't mind either way. Claiming is often easier though so we know who is going to read for what. It avoids more than one person reading for the same letters, which could be handy especially for the more difficult ones.
What does the rest of the team think?

Dial down your expectations! It's not bad, just pretty standard YA fantasy-fare, the quasi-African setting notwithstanding.

You could still participate in the discussion after the 12th and get some points?

I get all my books from the library, and I'm not sure if I will be able to get the BOM books. I'm 63 on the hold list on 4 copies for Children of Blood an Bone and a similarly long wait for Lilac girls. Maybe with more time if be able to get a copy but that seems like a 2-3 month wait.

Wow, 63rd! Crazy how long those waiting times are at times!

It's actually on the shorter side, if a book is really popular it's longer. I have one hold and I'm 103. That book has already been on hold for 2 months. I might have better luck if I was not using the digital library for some of the books, but I've waited upwards of 6 months for one of the Thrown of Glass books for a physical copy. That will teach me to read popular books. That being said I'll do my best to participate in BOM but it is going to depend on the books picked.
Oh wow!!
We don't really have a lot of libraries here and generally none carry the books I read so I haven't used a library since primary school. That is insane! But at the same time, it's really cool as well. Means lots of people still read and that is just awesome :-)

We have an amazing library system here, North Carolina. Almost the entire state shares books, so if my local library doesn't have a book chances are another library does. I've come across a few books that I can't get. I created a goodreads shelf for them. It's a little sad because it is often the last book in a series and I assumed if they have the first two books they'd have the third one. Not always true. I'm pretty lucky though and for the most part I don't mind waiting for a book. There are plenty of other books to read while I wait.
That is pretty cool! Shame though when they don't have all the books. Is there a possibility to ask them to order a particular book? Especially if it's part of a series they carry, they might not mind?
You're right, though! Lots of books to pass the time while waiting for other books :-)

I've made requests but that doesn't always mean they will get the book. It depends on how new it is or how popular the other books in the series were. If a book isn't popular to save space they go through the collection and remove them after it is a few years old. It's unfortunate when it happens to books you want to read but it does seem to happen.
When I worked at the public library, I wouldn't get rid of a whole series, but I'd sometimes stop ordering the newest book in a series if readership wasn't high enough. I ordered science fiction and fantasy so that meant a lot of series that might not get completed.
That's a shame! But from the point of view of a librarian, I can understand the reasoning behind it.
So true. I know that my library does the best they can but they had the budget cut for ordering books.
I reserved Children of Blood at my libraryThe book #41 and waiting
The audio #27 and waiting
I placed the audio on hold

Cat (my nickname's Kat but with the K!) that sounds a bit discouraging! They promised a unique premise blablabla. Well, an enjoyable YA is still better than bad YA. A little off topic, did you read the Lumatere Chronicles by Melina Marchetta?

Eurgh, so many interesting Buddy Reads popping up all over the place! I cannot possibly (re)read all those books D:
Who is going to (re)read the Harry Potter books?
Is anyone going to (re)read the Kate Daniels books?

I've not heard of that Lumatere series - any good?

YES! I highly recommend it. Also, The Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner. I can't recommend it enough. It's so good!
Haha, a few of my bestfriends call me cat(the animal) in my language and it makes a funny nickname. It started out as a joke buy then it stuck. People sometimes look when we're out in public and they call me.
For spellsI think we could have a google sheet to keep track of what everyone is reading
...your thoughts
Sunshine - we will have a TT spreadsheet and I'm sure all the different challenges will be represented on it... If not, then we'll come up with something ;-)
E and I talked about it and we want to use every book possible for the spell-outs. There are 191 letters!!! So simply claiming letters probably isn't the best approach. Instead, for each book you post a completion for, include what letters it works for and E and I will place the book where it's needed. Obviously we will concentrate on filling in the higher point words first and will call for letters we need when we get close to completing a word.Below is a breakdown of the letter by total. There are a large number of the vowels (as usual) but especially I, O, and U, which I find the hardest to find. You might keep those in mind when you are choosing books to read! Remember, title/author/series/main characters all work for this one :-)

I've still got 4 books to finish by the end of the day. This has been one busy week for me. I'd really like to finish all these (the start for uno mini and then oops someone else filled that task, so start a new books) before started the next group of books. I saw there was a buddy read for A Wizard of Earthsea the author would cover a U. I just read it. (I wouldn't recommend it actually. It didn't feel like it was a great work my Le Guin.
I'll see if there are any of the buddy reads I'm interested in. I've seen a few that I already read the books listed, first in series, and I would be interested in the second book.
I'll check when I get home from work or on a break.
Fingers crossed that you'll manage to finish all of them or at least most of them!!
Hmm.. yes, I was planning on joining that Le Guin buddy read. I tried reading The Dispossessed at uni but couldn't get past page 20. Now though I'm not sure whether that was because I wasn't in the mood for it or because I thought the writing was terrible. I've been told a few times though that Earthsea was a good series for those who didn't enjoy her other writing, so... Guess I'll just have to give it a go? Shame though that you didn't like it.
Lots of buddy reads up already and a lot more to come, I'm sure!

You might even be able to start reading in the evening - depending on your time zone! But waking up to the start of a new challenge is awesome :-D

Eldarwen, A Wizard of Earthsea is a very slow read. I, at least, felt removed from the story and I kept waiting to care about what was going on with the characters. The first book does a lot of setting up the world, characters, and legend of Sparrow Hawk. It doesn't have action or any excitement. The best way I can describe it is like a plow horse plodding along, slow but steady. I have no idea about the rest of the series it could be amazing. I won't be reading it though.
