I enjoyed them - popcorn, but half and half, which is my favourite!

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 914 comments I do have another orange book that is definitely orange enough: Frogs & French Kisses (Magic in Manhattan, #2) by Sarah Mlynowski

I am also working on Crooked House by Agatha Christie so you can drop the house on a witch :-)

Oh dear:(. Bad books or just out of sorts?

you’ve brought in stupendous amounts of BR points , you know. Which will be the eventual differences between teams

I'm glad! I'm probably gonna read a few more HP books, hopefully!

No, the book is really interesting. I'm just having a little reading dip, stupidly inconvinient to get it now. =_= But I'm soldering on!

Don't feel bad... with company all weekend and other real life nonsense, I haven't gotten any reading done for June until today. Hopefully I can get back to my usual pace quickly. I have too many challenges going on to lose almost a full week of reading time.

Hurrah!

Melinda finished her long brown book, so that the first class complete! and it's the one I inspired - Herbology, so double-yay!

Potions: we only need a red book and we've got all the colours of brewing done :)
Melinda's found a knife book - and it's Terry so that'll be fun :), but we've nothing pencilled in yet for romance with water on the cover or scales on the cover. Katie indicated she might be able to do scales, but I am not holding her to anything, as I expect a massive post-Quidditch crash from both her & Marie!

They've been doing SO well! I think we did a pretty good job at finding most of the issues with the initial rules, so whilst it was a bit frantic at points there (I'm master of the understatement, me!) the next rounds are going to be improved with all the feedback & lessons learnt. high five, chaps!

In other exciting news, a couple of Marie's books that were read in the hope of scoring goals can now be used in DADA. What creatures do you want to defend against using:
Sweets & a Stabbing
Quiet Killing
We've got zombies, vamps, weres & fae....

Would this qualify as water on cover or is that too little?

is that one you've already read?

Melindam | 8288 comments Some thoughts concerning Quidditch ...

I have my doubts, even after the "teething" problems will be removed.
I have been trying to follow the beater and chase threads as well as announcements, just to see how it's all working out and I am still completely bewildered, but at the same time totally AWED by the present team's -including coordinators / announcers - stamina and courage. You are all AMAZING for playing, scoring and being able to retain your sanity!

On the other hand, I don't think I would like to be part of any games, unless maybe if we do 1-day-shifts and the total playing time gets curtailed drastically (not more than 3-4days for keeping/chasing/beating altogether + extra days for seekers).

From what I see on the sidelines is that the players' online presence and reading time/skills is required 24/7, which I am simply unable to give with my work and family requirements. Generally, I couldn't read more than 1 short book/day and that only if I can start in the morning while commuting to work and finish while commuting back in the afternoon. Maybe I could squeeze in an extra hour after I put my son to bed, but no more.

I joined TT for the fun of it - but, honestly, this quidditch game is not fun, it's madness.

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
Quidditch is for sure a game for faster readers with flexibility!

We're waiting to see what Sonia's fertile mind will come up with for the next matches, but I suspect it will remain a niche sport.

Please don't feel like you have to be involved - it is for fun, and if madness doesn't float your boat, then that's cool.

Everyone's contributing in their own ways, and there is still Tri-Wizard coming up - no one has any idea what that will entail, but I suspect there's a lot more structure in that game, so it might work for everyone. Though that is airy conjecture on my part!

OK, Cat, thanks for setting my mind at rest.

It's just that I hate letting the side down - true to my HuffPuff! nature :))))))

Maybe I could be used as occasional reserve.

message 416: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
You are not letting the side down! No one is letting the side down! The only way anyone could let the side down is if they vanish on us with no warning!
(if RL happens, please let Katie or I or the team know. There's nothing sadder than seeing the other captains wondering where their teamies have vanished to :( )

Everyone is contributing in their own way:
you are bringing in the long book points
Emelie, Elena and Sarah are out there chattering to other team readers about books for BR points
Katie & Marie are reading like blue-arsed flies for Quidditch
Amy is quietly getting on with it, filling class tasks
Me, I hope I'm steering this ship OK!

message 417: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments You are a great Captain! :)

message 418: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments Which may be a good point to say there's been a small amount of vanishing from me at the moment. I've been (still am, but microscopically better than yesterday) very ill and have barely read the last two days. Little bits of audio and I've read maybe half an hour all told of the Fantastic Beasts screenplay and tried to chat from my phone for the buddy read.

Frankly I'm hoping to get back to my normal level of incapacity soon, or it may be better for the team if I quit as my book numbers may plummet.

Cat- there's a donut book on my shelf from 3 June that I haven't done a completion post for, and I won't be (physically) able to get on the laptop for the foreseeable. Can you pick it up from my shelf? Thanks.

It's sad it's this weekend you are up, cos if I wasn't in Wales we could have tried to meet up :(

I'm off to Wales for a birthday weekend (mine) with the family, which will be fun fun fun, which my liver will hate, and which won't see much weekend reading outside of the train journey.
And I totally decided to go on the train rather than squish in a car with the niblets so I could read! #bookworm

Sonia's wondering how everyone feels about Tri-Wizard:
should it be a House game (i.e working with other Hufflepuff teams - like Quidditch but without the time pressure!) or a team game.

Her question's here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Pipe up if you have a view.

I said House, because I've enjoyed the chatter with the other houses, but I'll be just as happy if it's team only.

We've not had much info still, though Sonia did drop some teases about it being inspired by:
- genre challenges
- character challenges
- bringing the HP magic to other NBRC challenges.

Make of that what you will....!

message 435: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments Thanks all. I didn't want to leave but also didn't want to let the team down and I really don't know how long it'll take until I can read the same as before.

And thanks Danielle for popping in.

(I'm no better today).

I shall smile to myself over the weekend thinking of Marie and Cat living it up in London and Wales. Have a fabulous time both.

The mods are looking at team numbers again, so I can ask them to reduce your #books read per month to 1 or 2, if you want? that way you can still contribute without feeling you've let us down (cos you haven't!) and we might get another reserve reader too...

Sarah | 2131 comments When do the mods need to know by? I'll see how tomorrow goes and reassess where I think I'll be. I would be very sad if I managed less than one audio book a week, so worst case would still be 4 books a month.

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 914 comments Halloween Rain (Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 1, #1) by Christopher Golden by itself
OR
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #2 Halloween Rain; Bad Bargain; AfterImage by Angela Darling which is a 3-in-1 and contains the aforementioned title

message 444: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
I’ve asked about the second one, as the individual book doesn’t have Buffy in the title, which is where the defense needs to be found - cover/ series won’t cut it :(

I’ll let you know what the others think

message 445: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
re Buffy, one of the captains/mods has chimed in with a yes, so if you want to read the second version (the 3-in-1) that'll work :)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
and that means that DADA is coming together very nicely.

Here's where we are at. I've noted possible books & readers, but this isn't set in stone

1) Vamps: Bite Me If You Can (read - Katie) & Buffy book (Buffy tbr - Amy)
2) Weres: Prudence (read - Amy) & Spinning Silver (Spinning Silver tbc - Cat)
3) Witches: The Book of Life (read - Amy) & Crooked House (Crooked House tbr - Amy)
4) Fae: The Darkest Part of the Wood (read - Amy) & Iron Gold (tbr - Cat)
5) Zombies: Boneshaker (read - Cat) & ????

We can repeat dark arts, and we have two generic defence books to use:
Sweets & a Stabbing and Quiet Killing (both read by Marie)

So we need to find two more "dark arts" creatures in books and one more defence :)

ETA, or we could use Children of Blood & Bones - Sonia's mentioned the use of bone charm ward defence in the Kate Daniels series as a valid defense

message 447: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments I love Buffy as a defense! And dropping a house on a witch is inspired. Brilliant ideas, Amy. :)

If I could make requests for the next couple of weeks, it would be:

1. Katie, can you finish Red Dirt Heart 3 for potions?
2. Can people be on the look out for scales on the cover, that they'd read or recommend to others to read?
3. Katie, can you do a pair of hunky man with clothes + hunky man without clothes for the banishing charm?
4. Everyone have a thing about the History of Magic class: we need to make a story using 7 book titles. I think we've some good options in our sheet to at least make a start.
5. Think about Us! we need lots of them, and we haven't got many. I'm not stressing yet, but it'd be good to get on top of them soon
6. Think about longer books with celestial objects in them (sun, star, moon, comet etc). Page length drives the points on offer here, so I'd ideally like 500ish page books... (a girl can dream!)
7. Keeeeeep reading!

The next BOMs have been released!

Rosemary and Rue - 2 July

I Hunt Killers - 12 July

The Tattooist of Auschwitz - 22 July

Head here if you are interested in reading for any of those. Don't forget that we get extra points for BOM involvement - including writing DQs :)

Buddy Reads continue to be busy - check out the options already running or planned, or even request your own in the request thread!

If you have read a BR book during TT, do pop over to the thread and get involved with the chat for those points :) (and then come & let us know that you've done so ;) )
