Katie | 1634 comments That's nuts, Cat! A good vacation, though, right?

On another note, I'm sorry I haven't been getting my books on the sheet or even posted in our completion thread. My mind is solely focused on Quidditch, but if this is a big problem or super inconvenient for you, I will carve out the time to get them where they need to be! :)

No no, it’s absolutely fine! Quidditch plus family leaves no time for anything else. I think I’ve caught up on everything but quidditch books, which I’ll tackle on Monday :)

I’ve put in a pair for summoning charm, and 2 for prophecy (Circe & Elbunden (soz if that’s spelt wrong, I’ve not checked the original!))
Count of Monte Cristo went into arithmamcy
I’ve also completed a spell out of Morsmordre :)

Looking at DADA, I’ve saved some books with Dark Art options:
Bite me if you can (vamps)
boneshaker (zombies)
Prudence (vamps, weres)
Hobbit (dragon, elves)
darkest part of the forest (fae)
Book of life (vamps, witch)

We need titles with defences.... so looking for silver, cross, stake, fire, gun, iron

For witches, I thought about fire and also water / house (from Wizard of oz). For dragon, sword, arrow, magic?

Any other dark arts / weapon suggestions gratefully received!

@Emelie, can you give me some info on the prophecy in Eldbunden, please? Or say if you think it's better for the "uses divination tools" section

Shall we transfigure Dewey The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron into Max (Cold Fury Hockey, #6) by Sawyer Bennett ? (or vice versa)

The prophecy/the palm reading fortune telling is that the MC will always live a life of 2 - 2 parallel lives (normal human & her supernatural world life), have 2 lovers/love interests going at the same time, that she'll be torn between these 2 things always.

Also managed to complete sectumsempra, so only the many many basic spells to read.

As well as cat -> man transfig above, what about
Chocolate Crunch Murder (Donut Hole Mystery #15) by Susan Gillard -> Geekerella by Ashley Poston
Doughnut to tyre?

I do also like the idea of Drift The Unmooring of American Military Power by Rachel Maddow to a man. Just need a man on cover book....

message 358: by Emelie (new)

Emelie | 415 comments Awesome job, Cat! Love all the ideas. One of the books I'm reading, Fallet Samir ( am on phone rn, don't know how to link book then) has a male body and what looks like a man driving. If it would fit!

message 359: by Melindam (last edited Jun 06, 2018 12:40AM) (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments I finished "How (not) to date a prince" today but will be able to post it to completion thread tomorrow. It is definitely fluff/chick-lit, so it could be used for herbology ... or different types of food are mentioned so it could be used for magical creatures.

message 360: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
Ah, let’s use it in chick lit

message 361: by Elena (new)

Elena | 1403 comments I like all the transfig ideas too! And thanks for keeping an eye on the spells for us, Cat!

If we don't already have a book to match Drift, I can read The Forever War (The Forever War, #1) by Joe Haldeman - it has a dude in military outfit carrying a weapon :) It'll be at least a few days before I can get to it though.

Yay! It’s low energy but fun :)

I didn’t finish this season :(
Hols with niblings prevented furious reading last week.
But the fun of the hols makes up for that!

Eldarwen | 13645 comments Mod
Holidays are a good thing and sometimes very necessary! Shame you didn't finish the season though.. oh well :-)

Low energy can be fun, too! If I have a gazillion individual challenges to update, I'll go nuts but this is just one and it's different so should be fine. Besides, the tasks are really creative and interesting.

message 365: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments Marie / Katie / Cat - you are doing an amazing job for Quidditch. I am trying to follow, but honestly, I am totally bewildered by it all.
I find it rather daunting.

And btw, I will finish HP and the Goblet of Fire by tomorrow

I wonder if I have the courage to sign up for the next game as anything. You seem to be sooooo on top of it all.

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
I think they need to work out a way to slow it down.
Cos I can’t read at that constancy- I’ve got to work! Even announcing next week might be tricky, with work meetings & such And you guys will burn out.

message 369: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments I am also currently reading Peril in the Old Country (Terribly Serious Darkness, #1) by Sam Hooker .
Don't know if the cover could be used for transfiguration?

message 370: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments I agree, Cat, maybe they'll come up with some rules to make it so that people who have commitments can play, too.

I think we can probably also be smarter about who we put in what position? We can probably be more efficient that way. :)

message 371: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments I hope they modify the rules after some "lessons learned", because I simply cannot commit the way you are supposed to in the current match and yet I would feel bad to let the team down

Gooood afternoon chaps!
how's it all going? any good books coming up? (don't answer that one, Marie & Katie!)

We're rolling along nicely, I have to say.
- Herbology: waiting only on Melinda's long brown book and then that's complete :)

- Divination: we need three books: 2 with use of divination tools and one not-yet-published ARC. I'll check out what Amazon's Kindle First program has for June

- Potions: I am SO happy here! We've got 7 books to read, but we've covered off most of the colours. We need two orange and one red cover/title; plus a romance with water on the cover, a book with a knife on the cover and a book with scales on the cover. That last one will be tricky, I think.

- Transfiguration: we've completed four pairs, we need three more, but - if Elena will be a doll and read Forever War (which is very good & worth it!) - that'll be another one finished. (there's no rush Elena). I'll keep an eye on possibles as you report books in, but if anyone wants desperately to read a pairing, go for it!

- Charms: we've two completed, but lots still to work out

- DADA: I've got my eye on books with dark creatures in them, but we've not got any defensive titles yet. We're looking for things like Iron / Silver / Cross / Gun / Sword etc I'm kinda into the idea of killing a witch with a house or water too!

- Others are as yet (basically) untouched. I might start canvassing you for longish books with celestial objects in the title for Astronomy - that's the only class where size matters!

- Spells: I'll keep an eye on books for spells. I might put some of the dark creature books in slots so I can see what's what then, 'cos we can shift them about later if we change our mind.

so: great reading team!

oh, should've asked too: does anyone want to be a sub for beaters / chasers in Quidditch this round, to give Marie, Katie, Trinia & Amanda a chance of a breather?
We think the quaffle is about to be broken, so I suspect you wouldn't be needed until tomorrow.

No worries if you don't fancy it - I'm not that desperate to "lose" more books to the quidditch maw! it's ravenous

I'm currently a Gryffindor beater - having a blast (even when the book I have to read is, well, not one that would usually hit my tbr ;)

message 377: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments Cat, I know I've got a couple books with scales on the cover, though I don't know if I've read them in the last 6 months or if they meet the page requirement. I'll have a look after I'm done with quidditch if it's still needed. :)

message 385: by Elena (new)

Elena | 1403 comments I'm reading a book that I think can work for orange cover - The Chalk Man by C.J. Tudor , and yes, I'm definitely up for The Forever War! I'm trying to cover sci-fi staples for one of my personal challenges this year so it's a win-win :)

I want to help with Quidditch but I'm just too slow! I'll step in if there's no other volunteers, I just fear I'd be more of a hindrance than help :)

Melindam wrote: "It may be a dagger, not a knife, better have it cleared. :)"

pah! Wiki says: A dagger is a knife with a very sharp point and one or two sharp edges, typically designed or capable of being used as a thrusting or stabbing weapon

so long as it isn't a sword or cutlass or fork, it should be fine!

message 388: by Melindam (new)

message 389: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments Jingo (Discworld, #21; City Watch, #4) by Terry Pratchett

I'll assume it's this one, Melinda? I think you're safe with that one since it also shows the sword the dagger goes with. :)

message 390: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments No, actually it's another edition where a guy is holding a dagger in his hand (it's corgi but it's a charicature-like; coloured drawing)

message 391: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments Ah, Jingo (Discworld, #21) by Terry Pratchett , this one???

message 392: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments I'm thinking I see 2 daggers on that cover, so doubly covered! :)

message 393: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments Hey everyone. It's been quite a week (some good, some bad). I gave up following quidditch and am in awe of our amazing players; and the little bit of the match thread I read had brilliant announcements from Cat.

I do plan to read a book with silver in the title soon- this week possibly. I'm considering getting Gardens of the Moon from the library if it's still available as it's a monster - not sure which edition but I vaguely think I already checked and it was 800 + pages.

I can't take any more donut mysteries (have one to post tomorrow) at the moment, but if we don't come up with any more orange covers I'll persuade myself to read an orange one. They are really quick. I just need a week off them first!

message 394: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
I think I've an orange cover!
I don't need three people reading crap books just for this game! ;)

message 395: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments @Katie, yuss that's the one. :)

message 396: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments Thank you Cat! Very happy to give the orange a miss.

I wouldn't read them - but high series numbers that I don't care about reading out of order are very useful for the nrpg. And I fitted quite a lot of them into last season's SRC for easy points.

I so have a problem with reading solely for challenges.

message 397: by Amy the book-bat (new)

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 914 comments Haven't read these yet, but I have them downloaded. I just need opinions.

red or orange?
Solo by Kwame Alexander The Devil's Highway A True Story by Luis Alberto Urrea

enough orange?
When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

enough yellow?
Drag Teen by Jeffery Self

if these work for colors, I can read them sooner. If not, they can wait a little longer. I'll get to them all eventually.

I am ready to support the chasers this afternoon, if needed. If not, by tomorrow I will finish my big, hardcover brown book for Herbology.

For divination, I have an ARC by Netgalley to be published July 10.
Shelved Under Murder (Blue Ridge Library Mysteries #2) by Victoria Gilbert

And I will definitely read Jingo (Discworld, #21) by Terry Pratchett for cover with knife! I will add the book links to the team tracker.

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
@Amy, I agree with your colours - and Melinda does too, which is added relief, as I'm often off-base on colours!

Colours we need are:
orange *2
red *1

Elena's reading one orange book, so if you want to read another that'd be great!
I've got in mind to read Red Dirt Heart 3 for the red (I used 1 & 2 for Herbology), but that'd be at the weekend probably
