Emelie | 415 comments Oh, no, Cat! I hope your laptop can get fixed swiftly enough! It's such a stress having a computer broken, especially when you have important stuff on it.

Re the classes: I like all the ideas you've presented! I'm on board with them.

Fab.

I went ahead and put that 2nd transfiguration pair in!

also added Wyrd Sisters & Behind Her Eyes to Potions

I'm thinking about Sarah's A Gentleman in Moscow - set in a hotel, and it is really tickling me to have a magical creature that can only be found in hotels - can I do that??! Would you guys mind??

message 253: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments Lol! That would be funny. The hotel gnome/sprite/pixie/phantom or something.

So, we are into the 2nd week now. I feel like it's starting to come together - just in time for Quidditch to upend everything!

We're doing really well - 32 books read (though I suspect Katie's got a batch to report when she finally gets kid stuff sorted!); 1 Spell complete; 15 Class tasks complete and another 7 in active progress; 2 BOMs read for; 3 BRs read for; 10th on leaderboard (despite having read the fewest books!)

All in all, a great start, I think!

Have you got any picks from last week, and what are you plans for this week?

For me, I read Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie, and thought it brilliant. A modern day riffing on Antigone by Sophocles, it's also an exploration of modern Muslim life in Britain. I've not read Antigone, and my enjoyment of the book wasn't diminished by that. I suspect I'd've got more from it if I did know the plot, but as it was I loved the characters. Well, as you aren't supposed to love the Home Secretary, that's maybe not the best word. But they were all real & believable. And the story worked. I totally recommend it, and was moved to actually rate it (which I generally only do if I have strong feelings about a book, being lazy)

For this week... I've got a load on, in a push to finish SRC. That means finishing:
- Lincoln in the Bardo - BR-ing this
- The Return of the Native - sheeessh... this is Hardy at his most lyrically descriptive about a blasted heath. Not to mention his unlikeable main girl.
- The 12:30 from Croydon
- No Is Not Enough: Resisting Trump’s Shock Politics and Winning the World We Need - I'm taking this one slow, as there's only so much analysis of Trump & the causes of Trump a gal can take, ya know?
- Lyrebird

and starting (& finishing before the end of the month!):
- Circe - BR starts Friday
- Rosemary and Rue
- The Mysteries of Udolpho - probably. It's this or some other long 18thC book
- A.N. Other tbd *2

That's doable, right? Right?!

the only ones I think I've got spots for TT are
Lyrebird by Cecelia Ahern - feather for fire Charm and
No Is Not Enough Resisting Trump’s Shock Politics and Winning the World We Need by Naomi Klein - for potions, though is it yellow or orange?? plus possibly
Circe by Madeline Miller has a prophecy...

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5922 comments I am reading Territory of Light next as it works for Scrabble

I have the two buddy reads
Behind Her Eyes which i will do very soon
The Count of Monte Cristo which i might start but i want to finish it in SRC rules so not going to be for a week or two

I also have the Naomi Klein which tin eye says is Yellow about 65%

I also have a Z book if we need that for spells and i would like to get to it soon

I have tons of ARC net galley books so I can cover that if needed

I also have hardbacks from library - the Naomi Klein is one of them

However i tend to read on impulse just hoping that they fit

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
Impulse reading is great, and we will totally be able to use them!

I'm just trammelled at the moment by my desire to try & finish the Spring SRC. I'm not quite sure why I'm so far off completion at the point :(

message 259: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8289 comments As soon as I finish "Thud", I will start or rather catch up with HP4 informal BR with some TT members from other teams and will also start on Monte Cristo BR. Paralelly I will read the HU version of "Origin" for Herbology task.

and once I finish The 12:30 from Croydon (this evening) I'll be reporting another completed spell, which, having assigned Sarah's A Gentleman in Moscow to Magical Creatures, means that almost all books completed will have been put to work against a spell or class. We've got Sarah's Lies saved for History of Magic - figuring on that being a good title for the essay :)

To get the spells to work I did a little swap, putting Disconnected into a C in CRUCIATUS to be able to use Eye of a Needle in IMPERIUS:

I	Lilac Girls	Marie
M Midnight Alias Katie
P Painted Faces Katie
E Eye of a Needle Marie
R White Hot Melindam
I In This Grave Hour Marie
U Győztes kerestetik Melindam
S The 12:30 From Croydon Cat

Katie | 1634 comments Looks good, Cat! I do have a few books to report (hoping to get to that tonight). :)

Hope everyone is having a great day! I'm making my first pitcher of sun tea of this summer and am super excited about it! :P

message 262: by Elena (new)

Elena | 1403 comments Hello everyone! I was hoping for a more productive weekend but we had a first day without rain in almost a week and couldn't pass a chance to get out for a hike yesterday. I did finish Behind Her Eyes at least :)

I'll try to finish The Maze Runner today and Grey Sister later this week. I'll be starting Indigo next and if no one has a skinny book task covered yet I can read The Time Machine (112 p.) or some other short classic that fits.
I'm eyeing a few BR threads right now but haven't made up my mind yet.

I have a question about transfiguration and charms classes - we can use either cover or title for the tasks but can we mix and match them for a pair? Like title for before and cover for after or do they have to be cover-cover/title-title? Hope that makes sense :)

message 263: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
oh! that question about Transfig & Charms has been asked but not - I think - answered!

Let me go check on an answer / prod gentle for an answer!

message 264: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
Ok, first off, Transfig is a pure cover search, titles not in scope, so that has to be cover -> cover

I've put in a reminder about the need for a ruling for Charms though, will update as I hear.

message 265: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments I would say what I'm planning to read this week, but it will probably change...

I keep seeing buddy reads for books I already own or I can get from the library, and then think that I really should join in for the points, and so the previous plan goes out the window. All while juggling library books expiring and SRC reading.

It's probably best if I don't claim any tasks at the moment because of this, even though I am thinking about options for them.

message 266: by Emelie (new)

Emelie | 415 comments I'm planning on finishing HP3 and Budori that I'm reading - haven't decided what to tackle after. I'm going to scan through the classes when I'm done with my current books and see if I can find something that can match to a class too.

What challenge is the SRC? You all talk about it, maybe I should check it out next year / next time it runs! :)

Seasonal Reading challenge.

It's a solo challenge that runs constantly, in 3month blocks, the next one starting in June
There are different levels of tasks with points assigned, and completing gets you the ability to set your own (Marie's got a 30point one to set :))
There are a lot of rules, and the mods are pretty strict if you don't meet the reporting or task requirements.

New season starts 1st June.

I've just spotted Marie's task is up, so I must go look at what she's got for us this time!

Edit - aww Cat, you got a mention. :)

Cat and Marie are speedsters who usually finish (it's a lot of reading), and I only managed to finish once and usually have no hope of doing so, but still have a lot of fun with it.

Melindam | 8289 comments I will finish Thud! tomorrow and will start reading
Harry Potter és a Tűz Serlege (Harry Potter, #4) by J.K. Rowling .

Maybe we could use it for transfiguration: Harry is holding an egg in his hand and his wand (DAF ??). Sorry, am fairly clueless this morning.
It is also a hardcover edition.

I have added it to tracker sheet as well as the The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas .
Would you believe it?Tineye -madder than a box of frogs today- confirms it as brown!?

hahahaha! "madder than a box of frogs" - noone I know apart from my mother says that! love it! :) her other one is "mad as a wet hen"

honestly, I can see that more comfortably brown than Origin, which my eyes now see as a dark pinky-red.

yeah. there's a captain's thread for checking things like colour & task fits, to which I might take both of your brown books - as we aren't officially using Mad-Tineye, getting human eyeballs-on & a view from fellows is a good idea - and it doesn't risk us being penalised for asking questions

if you fancy it have a look at a few tasks from this time and see just how much you could have done from what you have read since March. I think next season starting June is going to be massive but there are lots of things you could set as a personal challenge.

Finish all the 5 and 10 point tasks - thats 20 books and gives you a chance at winning a task setting
Read at least one book over 500 pages and one published before 1950 and claim big book / golden oldie ticket you get another chance at winning the chance to set a task
Write a review on one of the books you read and there is another chance
Post carefully and you could win moderators pet. You could ask any of us who do it already how to do that. I think your first season its about getting a feel for the challenge

I think I'm going to read After Bees for one of my remaining SRC tasks.
I think it is a bee on the cover After Bees by B.C. Nyren - perhaps we could transfigure Harry's egg into the bee?

But... is it sufficient obvious that it's a bee??

or we could use Goblet of Fire for use of divination tools? they muck about with tea leaves / crystal balls right?

message 276: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8289 comments Yes, I will check but Sybil Trelwaney is mucking about + Harry has several visions about Voldemort.

message 277: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments I'll be finishing Birds of a Feather by Jacqueline Winspear in a few days.

Could the birds in flight be used for the levitation charm - if we get birds not flying to pair with it? Or would this not count as birds don't need a levitation charm to fly?

Maybe they could be transfigured into/from something or be a part of our magical creature.

message 278: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
I'll double check via some stalking etc, but the charm task is to illustrate the effect, rather than actually be cast, if that makes sense. So, yes, a sitting bird would work

Katie | 1634 comments Hi guys! Things over here should be calming down after the upcoming holiday weekend. I have a few books to post. Here they are, if you'd like to start plotting. I'd like to get them on the sheet by Friday for the mods. :)

message 283: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments Ah, sadly I don't think that's water. However, I have a few coming up that have water on the cover.

Ocean Light (Psy-Changeling Trinity, #2; Psy-Changeling, #17) by Nalini Singh comes out mid-June and I will definitely be reading that one. Actually, now that I'm looking, I have a few with water on the cover. Do we need a few?

You should.
To keep yourself sane: Just see how many points you'd get without tying yourself in knots to do all of the tasks. And remember to read & reread the rules, posting requirements & task requirements! It's a massive effort for the mods, so they understandably give fairly short shrift to people who don't do that...

Touch wood, this season is the first time in about 3 yrs of my doing it that I've not made a mistake!

Yeah I skimmed briefly and it seems like it takes a lot of time to go over everything, so I can really see why they're strict on all those things. I would be too if I had to double-check all the completion posts!!

But yeah, I think I'll take some time today to read over it all, compare my books to the current set of tasks and then just not stress over it one way or another if I do decide to give it a try. I mean, it's a challenge, but if I don't manage to complete a lot of tasks, then so be it.
