I'd say the first one is purple and the second turquoise!

Claimed does look pink! Is it obvious enough pink? Maybe just enough.

If the books fit for a task and nothing better at the moment, I think we could use them for the banishing charm. I'm sure we can manage to do the rest anyhow. :)

I am quite keen to get rid of the colour tasks ASAP!
I hate colour tasks!

If I can get a couple more views on the Wildfire / Leah book colours I can put them in Potions. we need 14 coloured covers / titles / series for that part. So far I've got 4 filled in, which'd go up to 7 with Wildfire / Leah / Claimed. That'd make me feel like I've done some good work on that front.

I'm not sure what to do with Pancakes and Corpses (Peridale Cafe Mystery #1) by Agatha Frost

It works for two Potion tasks: knife on cover or cosy mystery with berries on cover. I'm included to the latter as I personally detest cosy food books and so taking that task of everyone else's plate struck me as A Good Thing. Obviously, if cosy food books are your thing we can use it elsewhere.... Maybe our magical creature only eats chocolate cake?

I read it only for an SRC task. It wasn't totally awful, except for the love interest who was constantly smirking. He even managed to smirk and frown at the same time. Honestly, a face can't do that!

message 204: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments I'd call Wildfire purple. Leah on the Offbeat...I could see that as turquoise. I don't know about pink for Claimed...it's kinda a 1/2 and 1/2 pink and purple.

message 205: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments Yeah, I'd use it for the food task. Those are annoying in the extreme...

I realised that I have already put a pink book in, so not urgent anymore :)

Elena | 1403 comments I agree with Emelie re Wildfire and Leah, I'm on the fence about Claimed, I think it might be contested and personally, I'd look for a safer option but will go with what team decides :)

Cat, I feel the same way about food cosies and for me the book is good where it's at. Thank you for taking one for the team! :)

message 208: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments Colours definitely purple & turquoise

message 209: by Emelie (new)

Emelie | 415 comments Yeah, use the book for the food option! It sounds much easier finding a cover with a knife than something with berries on it that is a cozy mystery no less!

message 210: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
yay!

Potions is shaping up nicely now, with 6 colours filled in (one to be read still). We still need a few, including another turquoise (someone else want to read Leah for this & BOM points??), plus indigo (apparently there's at least one series out there with Indigo in it) and two each of yellow, orange and red.

We'll also want to think about finding covers with cauldron, knife, mortar & pestle (or other smash-y grind-y thing - heavy rock and baseball bat were mentioned in the info) and scales - eyes peeled for books with any of those on the cover please!

message 211: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments Lol - those cosy food mysteries! They aren't my favourite but I think I have a higher tolerance for them, as long as they are spaced out between better books.

Cadbury Creme Murder (Donut Hole Mystery #3) by Susan Gillard
How about this for indigo? Mad tin-eye moody says it's 60.6 % Vivid Violet.

I'll try and knock out a few of these (helps my SRC as they are so quick) and they are quite good for cover colours.

message 212: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments @Elena - saw you just finished the first Flavia book. I love that series! Well, books 2 and 3 dipped a little for me, but then they get really good again.

message 213: by Elena (new)

Elena | 1403 comments I can do indigo - I own a copy of Indigo by Graham Joyce, I read it before but it's been years and I don't mind rereading. And one less food cosy to worry about! :D

It was really good and I put a request for the second book already! I loved Flavia, she is so devious and brilliant - is she Slytherin? or Ravenclaw? :)

message 216: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments For cauldron, I can read Wyrd Sisters (Discworld, #6; Witches #2) by Terry Pratchett .

Cat, I added read dates for my last book, hope GR doesn't mess it up again.

Melindam | 8288 comments And I could also read Thud! (Discworld, #34) by Terry Pratchett for a bat.

Fab! Thank you!

Melinda, your name is against cauldron & smash-y grind-y pestle & mortar
Elena, you've been pencilled in for Indigo

Melinda, GR has got over itself, and your book is all present & correct as it should be - thanks for double checking :)

Maybe a Slytherclaw. Lol.

I finished listening to book 6 just before TT - plot twists! Soo good. Unfortunately it doesn't look like my library has any further on in the series on audio, so I'll have a long wait before I can continue. The narrator gets Flavia's voice spot on, so I want to listen to them if I can.

Some thoughts on the different Class tasks:

Requiring Creativity
Care of Magical Creatures: 5* cover items plus 4* book information
History of Magic: 7* titles to be woven into a mini story

That Might be Tricky
Potions: scales on the cover
Herbology: brown 500+pages
Arithmancy: page count in ranges 501 - 650; 651 - 800; 801 - 900; 900+ (I can take that one with my The Way of Kings 1000pager)

Requiring Co-ordination
Charms: pairs of before & after covers/titles linked to the charm
Transfiguration: pairs of before & after cover item changes (we can come up with our own ideas, not just those in the books)
DADA: pairs of books: baddie in content & the defence item in title (eg vampire with a book with Cross or Stake in the title)

I am very happy for people to claim tasks in advance, but please, no more than 3 claimed, but uncompleted tasks at a time! If you finish a book that fits for a task someone else has already claimed, priority will still go to the claimer - we'll be able to use books freely at the moment. As we get closer to the end I might change that position.

I don't know how you want to go about the really creative ones: the magical creature & the essay. Shall we save them for mid-June, when we might want a little perk-me-up fun?

Melindam | 8288 comments Cat, put me down for the 500+ brown cover. This will be my 3rd for the time being.

message 222: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments I will also read "Carpe jugulum" by Terry Pratchett, which both has a vampire on the cover & vampires in the story: that could be one of the books for dada.

Awesome!

I'm currently reading:

1. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter, #2) by J.K. Rowling which has a snake and phoenix on the cover - could work for Magical Creatures.

2. Bundori (Sano Ichiro, #2) by Laura Joh Rowland - blade on cover. Can be used for Potions - Salamander blood

3. Eldbunden by Ylva Lee Lindell Orangey cover. MC can conjure fire. Supernatural beings in the book.

Edit: Have added them to the sheet, but not finished reading yet, so I can record names and other stuff that might be important. Didn't think to do it from the beginning *sigh*

Tina ❣ (nutrinut) | 2000 comments Hello to all Hufflepuffs!

Quidditch season begins soon. May 26th to be exact. Try-outs for the Hufflepuff Quidditch team will begin shortly.
We are looking for 3 Chasers, 2 Beaters, 1 Keeper and 1 Seeker to start us off in the first match. If you are not selected in the first match, you will have a chance to play in the following matches.

Please let your captain/co-caption know which position you are trying out for (can be more than one), your availability (just one match, two matches, only July, all matches, etc.), whether you're a speedy player and how your stamina (how many books/pages you can read in a day).

Thank you.
Go Hufflepuff!

Re Tina's message about Quidditch try-outs, here's the link to the early teaser info

There still a lot to be fleshed out I think, but we're not bothering Sonia about it (too much) until she gets the Classes tab on our sheets finished.

message 229: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments Cat, I was thinking that I could be a chaser. If the task is still to spell quaffle by reading books, I could read Hungarian books that never got translated so not much chance for other players to read them as well. While it's a bit wicked, I guess, it is also practical. Let me know what you think. Or maybe the rules will be more complicated than that?

I think I love it! It's possible that the rules might catch that loophole, but lets cross our fingers!

tie on child or stethoscope into snake

message 239: by Elena (new)

Elena | 1403 comments I like the 'stethoscope into snake' one :)

Before we do, are there any laws of transfig. that we have to follow? Like turning inanimate objects into living things and vice versa? I can't remember if there was anything in the books about it.

message 240: by Emelie (new)

Emelie | 415 comments My reader is working fine sfsin! I guess it needed a little rest, but now it's all nice again haha. Thanks for worrying and your empathy!

No, I don't think there's any law. In the books the kids get to try to turn beetles into buttons or vice versa, so Cat's suggestions should be valid!

There are certainly no probs with inanimate into living - they were always doing that in the books!
I'm not sure about the living to inanimate - though that feels pretty Dark Arts to me.

I'll check to see if there's anything in the rules about constraints on transfiguration

So, my home laptop has died following a security update :(

I don’t think it’s terminal, but does mean I am without decent web access at home for a few days. So I can’t do spreadsheet updates until I get back to work tomorrow. :(

But... we have two potions tasks finished & ready to report, in Melinda’s Wyrd Sisters cauldron & my flobber worm in Behind Her Eyes. And, if you guys concur, another transfig in the stethoscope &snake as above.

If we can get a romance with water on the cover, a super short book (sub 125p) and a knife on cover we’ll only have coloured covers to finish that class! ETA: oh. and scales on cover. I keep forgetting about that!

I think I’ve got a pair for fire making charm Lyrebird by Cecelia Ahern & Iron Gold (Red Rising, #4) by Pierce Brown
Feather->feather on fire. Won’t be starting Iron Gold until June though, so happy to be gazumped!
