It's such a good idea, not to buy more books, but there's always a book that I really want to read, right now! or that the library doesn't have :(

I do try.....

Zorro - I'm not that bothered about reading the Isabel Allende version - she's not an author I always get along with. I couldn't really tell you why, unless it's the magical realism elements to her books - it's not a genre I always gel well with... (and thank the mods that the Maze hasn't kicked that up as a genre!)

Don't jinx it o.O

I have never read an Allende book actually. My mum read several but I can't remember what she thought of them. But considering she read more than one, she probably didn't find them to be too bad ;-)

I know that I liked one of her books, because I picked up a 2nd with positive vibes, only for it to just not work for me.
She's not a bad writer in the least, and I certainly don't have the violent reaction to her that I do to Salman Rushdie, for instance

I have a couple of Rushdie's book on my shelf but for some reason, I'm really hesitant to pick them up..

What causes the reaction to his books? Subject matter or writing style?

ummm.... a bit of everything?

I managed to choke down Midnight's Children, felt pleased with myself (it ticked off a "best of" book list) and swore that I'd read no more of his stuff...
until RL book club picked another (Enchantress of Florence)
I got about 2/3rds through - and it was taking a ice age (as had Midnight's Children. I think I actually started it twice) and gave up as there was no way I'd finish before the meeting.
Happily just about everyone else also hated it and we have agreed never to pick a Rushdie title ever ever again!

< rant >
It's magical realism at it's most annoying, twee and contrived. Rushdie just comes across as being all smug about himself, and doesn't bother to write characters or situations that you can care about - trying for cleverness and failing there too.

And I get the impression that he's not that nice a person either, which doesn't help!
< /rant >

But you might love...

message 1056: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13645 comments Mod
You know that rant part, I heard that about him. That he's so intent on being all clever and awesome (in his opinion) in his writing that the rest doesn't really matter all that much to him and thus falls flat.

I'll have to try it though at some point to see for myself. Might just end up giving away my copies if I hate his writing haha.

Sometimes I enjoy it when a book takes its sweet time, or rather when it takes me a long time to read because I like to savour them (Red Sister for instance) but sometimes it bugs the hell out of me when I read and read and just don't seem to progress.

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5922 comments I have just finished the "picture on cover" book Wondered who was reading for other tri wizard tasks.

I can get one of the YA from the library but it is far from my favourite genre. I have nothing that obviously fits any of the other tasks and family visiting at weekend but i could look up KU for at least one task if I know which task needs doing

message 1060: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
Off the top of my head we need pink title writing, snake on cover (or in title), iron in title, silver in title

Most of the tasks that I know have been claimed are marked as such in the planning sheet.

Don't worry about the YA book, someone else will cover it, no probs!

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5922 comments For now i will read New World Order: The Mad Tyrant for order in title its quite short so shouldn't take long

the kindle edition doesn't have page numbers on GR the Amazon edition paperback is 187 pages - does anyone have librarian status ? if not i will ask in SRC librarian thread

I don't think anyone on the team is a librarian.
If needs be I have been adding comments to identify page count sources, but if you don't mind asking in SRC that would help ;)

Is your husband going to come out of the weekend unscathed? Or do you predict having to patch him up again?

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5922 comments we spent yesterday in A &E he has a slipped disc which may take weeks to get better. BUT A&E doctors are no longer allowed to give sick notes so i spent yesterday afternoon arguing with the GPs receptionist who can't offer an appointment to see the doctor to get a sick note until mid September and she cant offer one then because the appointments have not been released on the computer system. The only way to get an appointment is to turn up at the Gps and queue to see the receptionist who if she likes the look of you MAY give you one on the day. There i was at the surgery 0745 this morning second in the queue she studiously ignored us until 0800 and then proceeded to give appointments out to telephone callers first. Fortunately i did get one for him (otherwise there might have been all out war) and he is now off for at least 2 weeks maybe more. He has been given strict instructions about this weekend if he fails to observe the rules I WILL shoot him

I've put my name down for "spider in title", "wand on cover" and the LHS of the YA quarilateral

We're doing super well, with just ~25 books to finish TriWiz!

The tasks that haven't yet been grabbed are:

HP&HBP 4.4 Read a book with a heart on the cover
HP&PoA 5.2 Read a book with woods on the cover
HP&HBP 4.1 Read a book with "Love" in the title

Tasks that people have claimed are:
Amy
HP&OotP 3.4 Read a book with a cat on the cover
HP&HBP 4.1 Read a book with "Love" in the title

Cat
HP&PoA 5.1 Read a book a wand on the cover

Melinda

Tricia
HP&DH 5.3 Read a book with a snake on the cover

Shout out if you can't read any that you are signed up for, and if you want to grab any of the outstanding ones. I'd prefer to complete the partially started sets, mind you, prioritising the top three two over the others.

We've also got lots of letters (like, over 100), so don't worry that you have to read for tasks! U remains the favoured letter to find ;-P

The Case of the Silent Partner by Erle Stanley Gardner

has chocolate on the cover. If it's not too late, maybe we could use it for the "chocolate"-task and I'll just quickly read another Perry Mason mystery for the lawyer task.

Let me know if it's doable.

Just FYI - it's been confirmed (to howls of anguish in other teams) that the YA Quadrilateral books need to be read by different people.

Happily we've got that covered, with Elena, Melinda, Amy & I providing books, but if Elena can't get around to reading Delirium, then someone else will have to fill in the D - M gap.

I'm not worried, though :)
