Excellent work! The page count will DEFINITELY be helpful! And some decent vowels for spell-out letters :)

Melindam | 8288 comments Maybe I did not try hard enough, but dud nit find anything about the spell-it-out rules. Are they the same as in Uno?

message 53: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
I put the Spell out under a spoiler in one of the first few posts. but, yeah, basically the same as Uno - title (articles can be ignored) / author / series name / character (should be speaking role)

Hellooooooo!

Popping in from team Severus Snape - I know, I know, not everyone's favourite teacher, but let's face it, he's awesome anyway ;-)

Snape is a rubbish teacher, from what we see. Though maybe he's better when he's not teaching a class he favours (his own house) with one containing someone he has a fraught relationship with. Maybe the Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff classes are fabulous??

But Rickman was flat out amazing playing the part! He's sooooo good at villains! :)

Wait...

This isn't a good way to teach a class??

Emelie | 415 comments I've never done a buddy read before so that could be interesting to try out - I'm gonna look and see if there's a book I've been wanting to read for it already!

I've been trying to find Lilac Girls in my libraries but nobody has it. It's a book I've been wanting to read anyway, so maybe I'll even go out and buy it.

Can we still participate and get points for the BOM that's going on right now if we start the book after the game begins? It's another book I could think to read.

message 63: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments Good morning, everyone! It's a beautiful, sunny day here in PA...perfect for playing outside, which my kids are already begging for. :)

I'm not much of a buddy reader, but glad we have so many willing to do so on our team. Can't wait for this thing to start!

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5922 comments I will go for Behind Her Eyes there are 2 copies available from my local library
Laura is from team Newt Scamander

message 66: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments I've never done a buddy read before either, but I'm (at least going to start) rereading all the HPs for them. Except for DH, which I read in January, so I'll have to work out when the 6 months are up.

I think I'll give Monte Cristo a try too. It's one of those 'one day I'll read it' books, so it's a good incentive to try and crack it.

I'm hoping the library will play ball for the BOMs. I have a hold on Children of Blood and Bone, but there is one person in front of me, so I think it unlikely I'll get it before the time runs out for points. I can keep my fingers crossed though.

message 67: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5922 comments I may try the The Count of Monte Cristo
according to goodreads- the above edition - Robin Buss's translation is the best and from some recent classic reads i now understand that the translation can make a huge difference

Melindam | 8288 comments Wow, for such a small,Team, we do pick big books! :D

message 69: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments BTW, what are you all planning to read as a kick-off book for this challenge?
Just curious.

message 70: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments I'm not sure. I might go for Dark Queen (Jane Yellowrock, #12) by Faith Hunter . How about you?

message 71: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments I just finished "Burn for me" by Ilona Andrews (sorry, the mobile app does not allow links) and I will start Book 2 - White Hot.

I double checked this, and yes, if you start after TT starts, and answer the DQs within 1 month of the BOM start (i.e by end May), you can get page count and DQ answer points :)

Sadly I will only get DQ setting & answer points, not page points, but it's all good stuff!

Katie | 1634 comments Melinda -- That's such a great series! I love anything by Ilona Andrews, though. I'm really looking forward to and also dreading the last Kate Daniels book.

Danielle -- I'm so excited to read it! This is definitely one of my favorite series. I think I have you to thank for recommending it to me! Also, I know you rec'd the October Daye series which I'm also in love with.

message 75: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments I also love Ilona Andrews. The Hidden Legacy series is a re-read for me. I also read "The Edge" and "The Innkeeper chronicles". I am going through the Kate Daniels books for the first time, though. I have finished book 4 and will read on during this challenge.

message 78: by Elena (new)

Elena | 1403 comments So much happening already! Can't wait for this to start!

I think I'll join Behind Her Eyes BR too, my library has it available and reviews look very intriguing.

Monte Cristo is so good from what I remember! It was one of my favourite books in my school days and is overdue for a reread but I already have a few chunksters lined up for this year so will probably skip. I hope you guys enjoy it! :)

I think I'll start the challenge with Grey Sister, second in The Book of the Ancestor series. I read the first book in March and really liked it, looking forward to this one! I was lucky to notice an unclaimed copy on the new releases shelf in the library! :)

message 79: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments Elena, I heard about this series by Mark Lawrence (??). I may give it a try later this year.

message 80: by Elena (new)

Elena | 1403 comments Melindam, that's the one! I only read one book by Mark Lawrence so far and I really enjoyed his writing, the world and characters he created but it is my understanding that he tends to be pretty dark as well.

I read Red Sister earlier this year - it was pretty great. I do have Grey Sister (thanks NetGalley!) which I want to read - but I'm holding it off until the next season of SRC. I suspect that my first TT book will be an oldster, to meet an SRC task!

The Spells and some of the rules are up!

Spells can be found here

I've added this information to the top posts on p1, and I'll keep that updates with the answers to any questions that pop up.

I've also started work on a spreadsheet for us to plan & suchlike on, but it's a vague work in progress not fit to see the light of day yet!

Hi everyone! Popping over from Pomona Sprout to say hi!

You seem v organised thinking about buddy reads and what you're reading first already!

message 86: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments Hey Sophie! We are a small team (curiously the smallest, I think) with organised Ravenclaws Cat & Katie at the wheel. :)

message 87: by Elena (new)

Elena | 1403 comments Sophie!! Hello and thank you for dropping by! We're just a little impatient to start reading here so planning is how we deal :))

Diamonds, Sophie! We are diamonds!

Which is probably a little opaque if you've not read the whole thread...

My short mother has a Favourite saying: "they don't cut diamonds big!" So we are really Cedric "Diamonds" Diggory (the fact that R Pattz went on to sparkly diamond vamp film is serendipitously pleasing!)

I skim read the thread, but missed that! I like the idea of you being diamonds! Think we are going to aim to grow something impressive in our greenhouse

message 92: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments Look at all those difficult letters! I can contribute one of the X's. I was contemplating starting off with a v short book (for SRC), and I'll feel better if the measly 5 points for pages is offset by providing a difficult letter for the spells. ;)

Otherwise I'm not planning on planning for the spell-outs. Let the letters fall where they may - until we really need a U or something, anyway.

Melindam | 8288 comments We'll totally manage it, Cat. :)
The Diamond HuffPuffs (RavenPuffs/Huffclaws) to the rescue or whatever ... :)

message 95: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments Hey Sophie!

That IS a lot of books. I'm not planning anything. I'm just going to read and whatever I find, I find. I read a lot of romance/fantasy so I come across those obscure letters more often than you might think. Though, now that I've said that I'm not going to find any during this challenge... :P

Vowels. I hate hunting for the vowels!

I'm gonna be quiet tomorrow through to Sunday evening - timeout with my brother, his husband & nephew, including EUROVISION on Saturday evening!!!!

We get to start reading Saturday morning! So near!
I totally misunderstood what Sonia meant by midnight 12 May, and thought we'd start reading Sunday morning - taking midnight 12 to mean when the date flips from 12 to 13, but I'm not complaining that we get to start earlier than was in my head! :)

We've no official spreadsheets yet, so I've merrily nabbed one off Halli from Tonks, that covers the spells & general books.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

I think I've set it so that you can add your own books to the Books tab - if you want; but the Spells tab should be locked.

Re the spell-out: there are a lot of letters, so I reckon the easiest thing at the moment will be to shout out if you are reading for a specific rare letter, but otherwise, just report possibilities when you report finished books. - Cool?

As we get closer to the completion of the Spells we might change that.

And now I'm off to read some more of Children of Blood & Bone - I'm aiming to finish it tomorrow night so I have a new book on Saturday - whooop!

message 97: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments We have a load of 'U's and from my Uno experience I think that's the toughest letter + Xs.
We may have to hunt for them a little, but the rest shoukd be OK.

message 98: by Katie (last edited May 11, 2018 11:24AM) (new)

Katie | 1634 comments Hey guys!

We're going to be using a different thread to post our book completions. It can be found HERE. Cat's also linked it in Msg. 6 of this thread.

This will make it a lot easier for me and Cat to see the completions and get them in the sheet. :)

Can't wait to start soon!
