Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5922 comments I have a question about the "has a baby" book - this is the book i am reading Future Popes of Ireland

There is no real narrative about the birth - triplets are born and mother dies in childbirth leaving grandmother to bring children up.

Is this enough to make it count?

I am going to put to one side and start the "three" book for now but what do you think

Was the mother about in the story a bit before croaking?
If so then I think that'll work

the book starts with popes visit to phoenix park - she is there for that and that night grandma babysits so she and hubby can have alone time she gets pregnant - next mention she is dead

I think that'd be Ok, but am checking with the other captains for some reassurance

@Amy - would you say Thirteen Reasons Why might also work for "story within the book" task? - are there diary entries or something telling a story?

Just looking to see what flexibility there might be for the books :)

I think it could. Hannah is already dead at the beginning, but she leaves a set of cassette tapes that tell her part of the story and Clay is listening to those tapes and visiting the places mentioned as well as commenting about incidents mentioned in the tapes.

View from the captains is it won't work. Which is fine, it will stay in "Number in title" task, I was just hoping for some flex. nvm!

MAZE!!

if anyone is nearly finished a book with Contemporary MPG and title starting A-M (include articles if you wish) shout out - we need one for the maze.

Alternatively, if you want to volunteer to read one (quickly), head over : here for maze chat & planning

Note that reading for the Maze maybe be bumped if someone else pops up with a finished book before you get yours done - we'll of course put the book to good use elsewhere though!

message 864: by Tricia (new)

Tricia Schneider (triciaschneider) | 115 comments What does MPG mean?

I also have some dragon books that would fit any of that category if you need. And I might have a book with a feast on the cover. I have to double check first just to be sure.

And for couples dancing on the cover, does this one work?

Jane Austen's Guide to Good Manners Compliments, Charades Horrible Blunders by Josephine Ross

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
MPG is Main Page Genre - the list that pops up on the RHS of a book's "landing page"

I think that's a couple dancing - the formal group dance type rather than a waltz, but it's still a couple dancing! - so yay! tick!

Dragon in series name / title would be awesome, but any old dragon book would do as well! we've covered both of "dragon in book" and "dragon on cover" tasks now. Need dragons in title & series please!

And good to know you might have a feast - I think I've found one that I could read, but it's a way down my plan at the moment.

Now, what does RHS mean? lol

I think I understand what you're talking about though. The list that pops up under the Genres section, yes?

It's been a long while since I participated in a team reading challenge and this one is more complex than others that I've done in the past. I just want to make sure I'm understanding all of this. Thanks!

on the Right Hand Side of the page, yep! ;-)

This one is complicated, it's true. If you don't want to engage in the full complexities then you don't need to in the least!

The mods have tried to organise it so there is something for everyone:
for fast readers who like challenges there's the maze & quidditch (which I recommend as a spectator sport, but it's high maintenance reading!)
for readers who like tasks there's the TriWizard tasks
for readers who just want to read whatever there's the character spell-outs

Katie & I look after the spellouts, and I can use books in the TriWiz (especially after we finish the core taskset requirements), so those are easy going.

Basically, once we've got the first 36 books read for TriWiz it'll be much plainer sailing :)

Also - don't worry about asking questions - we're here to help & make sure it's fun!

a slight preference for His Maj's Dragon

I'm checking with Mods to see if they are going to be relaxed about the construction of "Dragon in title" et al, and allow for "embedded" words to be OK (like DragonKeeper) - hopefully they will, but if they aren't, at least the Temeraire book has Dragon standalone.

I told myself I wouldn't join any more challenges, too, Marie! When I first joined GR, I was addicted to reading challenges. I loved them! But, then I kept having all these kids and my reading time was replaced by diaper changes and Cub Scout meetings. I miss my reading time though and my TBR shelf is seriously overflowing, so I thought a few fun challenges would give me a reason to put reading back on my list of priorities again. I liked the sound of this one and the team reading sounded like a lot of fun. Plus, I just finished reading the Harry Potter books to my kids last year, so I thought this fit nicely into my plans.

and updated our TriWiz core task status: see here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

We've completed two task sets, which I've reported to the main sheet, and are a good way through all the others too!

Excellent reading guys!

FYI, we can read for the other tasks too now, if we want. BUT we don't get points until we finish the core tasks picked above, so main focus is on those for now still, please :)

My nephew loves those books! He got a set of books 1 - 8 as a present, and his poor Dad had to read all of them - he was glad when they ran out of books in the set, but keeps grumbling about having read 200k words in the process!

I actually introduced the niblings to the concept of audiobooks when we were on hols, which was a win for everyone (though The Wind in the Willows was not a hit... luckily I had a couple of others to hand that were!). I should probably feed that back to their parents - audiobooks a really good way of having quiet time :)

I'm on tenterhooks to see what Melinda's read for us during her hol, but have reported another set to the main sheet - we've now completed two of the sets for DH! :)

Maze is going swimmingly too, with excellent contributions from Cedric - it's great that everyone who wants to is playing along there :)
