Alright, listen up chaps! We've got just about a day to finish up Buddy Reads & Classes before Tri-Wizards kicks off, including the last Quidditch game against those big bruisers in Slytherin!

Can I get a role-call of everyone, plus confirmation that you are playing on! :)

Karla - we're sad to see you go, but real life first. and I suspect that Tri-Wizards plus new job would be unbearable, so enjoy the job! Do pop in to say hello if you fancy :)

Can you all check that all your read books are shelved, and that all your shelved books have been recorded on the main sheet? (easiest way is to check the number of books on your shelf against the number of books on the Overall tab, and investigate any differences)

We'll need a Cedric main player for Quidditch - Marie, you are totally off the hook, don't worry! I'm looking at workload and going to see if I can take a couple of days off to volunteer to read read read, but no promises. Melinda - reserve player, check!

Tri-Wiz.... We need to start planning this properly.
We need to complete three sets of four tasks across three different HP books... I've put a cut-down listing of the tasks in our team sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Can everyone have a look and identify tasks that they can/want to fill? Ideally, pick a complete set of tasks, but that's not essential. What'd be ace is if you could put your name against the tasks you can fill (up to 6 at the moment) so we can work out which we are going to complete to get our points :)

Thanks!

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5922 comments I am continuing But i will be away when quid ditch starts IF you get stuck i am willing to sub for someone i can do keeper or chaser roles

I would quite happily look for books to fit and i liked doing the title chain las time

I can do LL in title
I can get KU baseball on cover The Game (The Carolina Connections #4) by Sylvie Stewart
Troll Wall The Untold Story of the British First Ascent of Europe's Tallest Rock Face by Tony Howard
and i can find a 5 word title

that is all the tasks in Sorcereers stone task 1

I can probably do all in task 2 as well

I dot know how easily i would find similar covers but the others in chamber of secrets task 2 would be OK

essentially i think i could fit any task

Wow, Marie! Here it is, it shows you have 104.

Question for the captains - can we use books we already started but won't finish till after TW starts for the tasks?

message 805: by Elena (new)

Elena | 1403 comments I can read at least two books for The Prisoner of Azkaban Task 4 - Go back in time. I don't mind claiming the whole task but will have to see what I can find for the other two first :)

message 806: by Sarah (last edited Jul 30, 2018 11:46AM) (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments I have 44 books on my shelf, spreadsheet says 43, but I only just posted one, so that looks right.

I'm here until the bitter end, but I'm really not sure about Quidditch. I'm just not a speed reader, and will never read alien-dragon-shifter-sex. It was really fun following the last match though.

I can probably fill a lot of the tasks. I know I'm reading a book with a funeral in right now (and I won't finish until after TW starts), but I'm not sure about finding all the other tasks for that (book 7)

message 807: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments Depending on how the other parts of TW pan out, are we trying to read as many tasks as possible anyway? As once the big point character spell outs are done, it's more points per book than for a minor character.

Obvs, we want to get the required tasks done first, of course.

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 914 comments I'll continue playing. I know I can do quite a few of the tri-wizard tasks. Not sure about quidditch. I don't think I can keep up with the reading for it.

Did you notice that there are two characters misspelled in the spell-outs? I saw it mentioned in the Leaky Cauldron. Parvati and Voldemort both have extra "R" in them.

Just updated my books. It is correct now :-)

Tri-Wizard (to start) I can definitely do:
CoS - set 4
Read a book where the characters attend a party
Read a book with Ghost in the title
Read a book with Death in the title
Read a book where they celebrate Halloween

CoS - 2.1
Read a book with “Witch” or “Wizard” in the title

PoA - set 3
Read a book with a moon on the cover
Read a book MPG Paranormal
Read a book with a wolf on the cover
Read a book with 'Wolf" in the title

PoA - 1.2 & 1.3
Read a book with "Night" in the title
Read a book with a predominately purple cover

PoA - 2.1 & 2.2
Read a book with a shapeshifter character
Read a book MPG Humour

OotP - sets 3 & 4
Read a book with a predominately pink cover
Read a book where the title is pink
Read a book with a teacher character
Read a book with a cat on the cover
Read a book MPG Mystery
Read a book where someone dies
Read a book with a large battle
Read a book where there is a "rescue"

Ok, so I think we can safely say that we will read three tasks in PoA

Elena's said she can do two of Task 4 - Go back in time (Read a book with time travel / Read a book with a clock on the cover / Read a book with "Time" in the title / Read a book a form of transportation on the cover) - Elena Let us know which one's you can definitely do, and we'll see if we can fit in others around that

Amy's up for Task 3 - Write a report on Werewolves (Read a book with a moon on the cover / Read a book MPG Paranormal / Read a book with a wolf on the cover / Read a book with 'Wolf" in the title)

I thought that GoF was reasonable too? Thought of setting Katie on the Task 3 - Yule Ball, which has a few romances. I've got a book with mermaid in it, so Task 4 - Retrieve Treasure could be doable?

And if Sarah's got a funeral, can we fill in for DH? (the first two seem easy)
In particular, can others read for Task 3 - Shell Cottage (Read a book with a funeral / Read a book a cottage on the cover / Read a book with lots of people staying in one home / Read a book where someone has a baby)??

Sarah wrote: "Depending on how the other parts of TW pan out, are we trying to read as many tasks as possible anyway? As once the big point character spell outs are done, it's more points per book than for a min..."

We will be, I think, but we MUST finish the core 9 tasks before we can fill in for other tasks, so I want to focus attention on getting those tasks & books filled in & finished ASAP :)

message 814: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments I've also got MPG War for the last task in DH.

I've been considering quidditch. If Katie and Marie are quidditched out (and I'm not surprised if you are!) then can anyone else play on weekdays, or is it weekends only?

I could have a go at chaser, and as I couldn't manage the full match, let the reserves play over the weekend or whenever they're available (they could pick what suits them and I'll fill in the gaps). I can do any day, just I'll need a break (or two).

I'm not so fast as those who've already played though. :(. I just worry we need a player who isn't just a reserve. Will happily swap with a faster reader if anyone can/wants to play.

@Sarah re Quidditch
I'm thinking of taking a couple of days off work to volunteer for Quidditch, but I can't read on 11th. I'm not sure whether I'd take 10th, 13th & 14th or 13 - 15th, though inclining to the former.
If you'd be happy to be reserve and maybe cover Saturday 11th, that'd be ace?

Tricia Schneider (triciaschneider) | 115 comments I'm in! Although since I'm new, I admit that I'm still a little confused about what needs to be done. My preference is romance and nonfiction, but I'm willing to read just about anything. I took a look at the list and I have many books that would qualify. If there's something out there that needs to be filled, I can probably read it.

Ok, can people start identifying which tasks they can cover from the list above - ideally to fill in the part-claimed ones first, and then we can work out which other sets to complete.

message 822: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8289 comments I can take all tasks in PoA Task 2 - fighting boggarts.

message 823: by Elena (last edited Jul 31, 2018 06:41AM) (new)

Elena | 1403 comments For PoA task 3 I can definitely read
3.1 - Read a book with time travel
3.3 - Read a book with "Time" in the title
3.4 - Read a book a form of transportation on the cover (or will work for PoA 1.1 - bus on the cover)

And Task GoF Task 2
2.1 - Read a book with "Dragon" in the title
2.4 - Read a book with a Dragon in the book

Is there a countdown to the TWT start? Or has it begun already?

For Quidditch I can't do weekends, won't be home much but will jump in on weekdays if needed.

message 824: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments @Cat re Quidditch- sounds good. Any day you like is fine with me. Although I think Melinda should have first refusal on whether she wants/is able to cover for you as it's her second (or is it third?) time as a reserve.

Just realised I'd already started (although I did put it aside temporarily) a book with "Treasures" in the subtitle, if plurals are acceptable. I can start it back up. Got a week before the library loan is up, so I'd have to hurry up anyway. ;) For GoF, to go with Cat's mermaid.

Roseena Peralta (roseenaperalta) I can do this one from PoA

Task 5 - Defeat Dementors

AND

DH Tasks:
Task 3 - Shell Cottage

I don't think there's a countdown for TWT

Oh! in Caps' thread it says books finished today can work for TWT :)

message 830: by Elena (new)

Elena | 1403 comments Sweet! Thanks, Cat!

Can we bank books for tasks outside our chosen 9 to be used after we complete the 9 or we can only start reading those after completion? Hope this question makes sense :) The reason I'm asking is I just finished a book that works for a couple but not the ones we picked.

message 831: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments I'm here and can read whatever you need me to read. Let me think about Quidditch. I don't know if I'm willing to play or not...when do you need me to decide? Or are we covered?

Sorry I've been a bit absent these past couple days. I will find the time to look at the TWT today and hopefully map out a few books I can contribute.

message 832: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
It does make sense, and the answer is no: books for bonus tasks must be finished after completion of the core tasks :(

but: which does it fit, we could switch to that book / task set instead?

message 833: by Elena (new)

Elena | 1403 comments Nothing too rare :)
It's this one - The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henriquez , works for

OotP 4.2 - Read a book where someone dies

HBP 3.4 - Read a book where someone tries to protect someone (character Mayor tries to protect ch. Maribel from the bully)

and can possibly be a half of CoS 2.2 - Read 2 books with similar covers (I've seen a couple of similar cover designs floating around)

There's also two Q characters if we still need it.

It fits the following tasks:

HP&PoA 4.2 - clock on the cover

Hp&OotP 4.1 - MPG Mystery

I have plenty of Perry Mason books that would all fit:
Hp&OotP 2.1 - the MC is a lawyer
Hp&OotP 2.2 - MPG Crime
Hp&OotP 2.3 - someone goes on trial
plus one fits Hp&OotP 1.3 - bird on the cover

TriWiz update:

we've got the PoA tasks (2,3 & 4) covered - names against tasks, at least - assuming Melinda is able to cover the balloon on cover task - that's Ok, right?

for GoF, I am working on the basis that we will attack tasks 3 & 4 plus another TBD.
for #3, I need Katie to read her single shoe on cover, please!
We'll also need to find a book with a fave romantic couple (ideally one already published!), a couple dancing and a book with a feast / dinner on the cover
for #4, I'm still waiting to see if plural will be accepted for Treasure (hopefully it will, and Sarah can cover that); Katie read the book with water on the cover and then we need a book with someone swimming....
I think that we'll look at the Dragon task too, unless others have a violent preference for a different set?

for DH, I think that tasks 1 & 2 are easiest, plus #3.

for #3 we already have Sarah's funeral book, Roseena, can you read the "lots of people staying in a house", please, then Marie / Melinda cover the "has a baby" (and just being preggers won't be enough) & "cottage on the cover"??

I'm pencilling in names in our planning sheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...) - please do put your name & book against tasks that you are reading for! :)

So far, I'm planning on reading Year One by Nora Roberts. That one can cover a book with a number in the title or a book where multiple people die (it sounds like it from the description anyway). I'm not sure where you'd want this.

Also, I have no problem with reading the favorite romantic couple book and a couple dancing on the cover.

I have lots of Dragon books, too, so if you need I can read some of those.

Tricia, don't worry, there's been a lot of flurry all round, and not much clarity, probably!

You can start reading immediately! If you have finished any books since 15 July we can use those too :-)

I prefer if you post completed books in the specific thread - here, but will cope if you forget ;-P

Oh, if you could prioritise "couple dancing" over favourite romantic couple, that would be great - I think I will put Roseena's Kindred in Death against the fave couple (Eve & Roarke <3 ! ), as we're already working on three sets of tasks for PoA. ETA or possibly the "method of transport" one

Roseena, I hope you don't mind about that - the book will still be used to get the core tasks completed :) - and turns out to be helpfully flexible too!
