Katie | 1634 comments Hope you both have wonderful vacations, Marie and Cat!

I'm still in awe of you, Marie, and your SRC finishes!

message 752: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8289 comments Congratulations, Marie!!!

I am also going on hols from tomorrow on with scanty internet so please forgive me for going incommunicado.
I will finish 2 books today (plus finished 1 already yesterday) and will post them later to the thread.

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 914 comments Hope everyone has fun on their assorted trips, etc. I will be staying home... might go to the library (that's as much vacation as I get to take... LOL). I will be participating in the Read-a-Thon in the AMMP group starting tomorrow, so hopefully I will get lots more books finished in the next week or so. :-)

message 754: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments You have a great time as well, Melinda!

I might do that read-a-thon as well, Amy. You always have great badges. :)

message 755: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8289 comments Thank you! I am planning to read as many books as possible, but cannot do much reporting until next Friday.

message 756: by Elena (new)

Elena | 1403 comments Congratulations on your anniversary, Marie!

And safe travels to all who are travelling this weekend, I hope you have a wonderful time!

It's supposed to rain over here for most of the next week starting tomorrow :/ We might catch a little sun before it starts tomorrow morning but looks like we'll be seeking our entertainment indoors for the most part :)

message 757: by Emelie (new)

Emelie | 415 comments I wished it would rain here too!

We're having the most extreme weather Sweden has ever seen. It hasn't rained since May. It's super dry everywhere. Farmers are desperate for food for their cattle. Some are selling or slaughtering them because they don't have any food. Others are trying to import and many private people are offering up their gardens and ground for people to pick grass from.

There's also fires basically everywhere in Sweden, and that's not me being dramatic. More or less every province except three, last I checked but that could have changed since it was some days ago, have fires going on. Some provinces have many many many and some just one or a few. Some that they doubt if we can even stop. People are evacuating, our SOS has never released so many danger notes to the public, and it's the worst natural catastrophe in modern history.

How awful, and I hadn't seen it on our (UK) news at all. :( Hope you and your family are all safe.

message 759: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments Yeah, Elena, we're supposed to get some much needed rain next week as well. I love rain, so I'm hoping it's more than a sprinkle. :)

Emelie, that sounds awful. Hope that turns around for you guys soon!

message 760: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8289 comments I am so sorry, Emelie. :(

We are also in need of rain, but the situation is nowhere as dire as on Sweden.

message 761: by Elena (new)

Elena | 1403 comments Emelie, that sounds scary, I'm so sorry. And yes, hopefully things will get better soon!

message 762: by Emelie (new)

Emelie | 415 comments Maybe it's not such a big event compared with the wildfires AU and US gets for example so the international media doesn't snap it up.

But thanks for the concern guys! I'm personally fine. Don't live near any fire (yet). They reckon that we would need 2 weeks of rain to quench the fires we have no chance of manually extinguishing. Our prime minister and the top head in the SOS team was on the news today saying it's the direst thing our rescue (or whatever to call it) system has had to work with.

Tricia Schneider (triciaschneider) | 115 comments Hello, everyone! Thank you for the warm welcome! Sorry I'm late checking in. My kids had swimming lessons the last 2 weeks and are getting ready for upcoming summer camp so we've been busy and I haven't been online as often as normal. I have a lot of catching up to do with my reading, too! Life keeps me busy. :)

Morning from Greece!
We've been told that the challenge has been extended till 31 Aug.
Buddy Reads, classes & spells finish on 31st,so we need to finish up any BRs before then, plus any longer replacement astronomy books.

I've started Pillars of the Earth for a longer book there, and I've a couple of BRs still.

Triwizards start on 31 July, and we won't be taking any banked books into it.

message 766: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5922 comments Just making sure Cat for BR 31st August? I have Circe i might get it done this week but more likely next week when i am home

message 767: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments What about BOM? I was planning to read The Tattooist - do I need to finish before 31 July for that too?

message 768: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
Sorry, BRs finish on 31 July.
BOMs carry on through to 31 Aug

message 769: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
So Tattooist will be completion within a month of its starting

message 770: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments Good to know. Thanks.

message 771: by Emelie (new)

Emelie | 415 comments Ah, I thought we could read BR until the end.

Hope you have a good time in Greece, Cat! I hope your not near those devastating fires that are going on there? And enjoy the tzatziki! :D

message 772: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5922 comments Ok so i will get circe done before 31 July

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
I think you'll like Circe, Marie,so hopefully not a hardship!

@Emelie, I am up near Bulgaria, in the North East Aegean, so a long way from the fires. Absolutely horrific! It's been such a bad summer all over, really, with your fires too. (UK got away with just the one, though it was on a peat Moor so went on for a month or more. Thankfully out now)

Greece has been.... Errr.... Fun, in the main. My mum & I looking after two of my niblings - 5 & 3 and utterly annoying and adorable. It's not been my normal summer hol of lounging doing not much, that's for sure! Any reading had been rereading. Plus Enchanted Wood, Olga da Polga and The Worst Witch (on audio, twice).
We are both looking forward to dumping them back on their parents!

message 774: by Katie (last edited Jul 25, 2018 12:53PM) (new)

Katie | 1634 comments Lol! Glad you're having fun, Cat!

So, we've got new spell outs that the mods just added today. They're mainly to use up some of our banked books. I'll start checking out what we've got available later today. :)

How's your vacation going, Marie and Melinda?

The end of the year really just flies by for me. It used to be that we'd get to Halloween and then the rest of the year was gone. Now, we get to mid/late August and things really start moving along. I'll take some time for my birthday on Sunday and then start gearing up for the new school year. Sadly, this may mean I get less reading time.

message 775: by Marie (UK) (last edited Jul 26, 2018 12:13AM) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5922 comments we will be back on Saturday evening - visiting family in Belgium it has been very hot - too hot for me really.

The trouble with the peat fires on the moors is that they will burn underground until we get substantial rain and the ones around rivington - my childhood home were started deliberately. Even whilst firefighters were fighting one lot a group of youths were trying to set others it just makes no sense to me.

message 776: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8289 comments Happy Birthday, Katie! So you are a Leo, too. Lol. My b'day is next Friday. ;)

message 777: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments Yeah, I'm with you, Marie. Anything over 85 is too hot for me. It's just been a roasting summer.

Thanks Melinda! Happy birthday to you, too!

message 778: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments Happy early birthday, Katie and Melinda. 🎂

It always seems so odd to me that the US goes back to school in August - my niblings have only just broken up for the summer, and here Katie is talking about back to school.

About the characters - if we don't want to be bothered to hunt out a Q for Quirinus, I read a Q title book that was used in spells (as the R in Riddikulus). Should be easy to switch in a different book for an R to snag that Q. I can't recall any X's lurking about in my unused books though, unfortunately.

I have an X! lol There's a character Xenocrates in Thunderhead (read July 15). I read it after we finished the first round of spells I believe :)

Katie | 1634 comments If there's only 1 Q, I don't think we need to go back and switch Sarah's book. Surely we'll come across something by the end of the challenge, but Elena's X will come in handy. :P

Anyone read anything particularly good lately? I just finished The Kiss Quotient which I really loved. Which reminds me, I need to update my books.

message 788: by Karla (new)

Karla I am so sorry I disappeared! I started a new job and have had other stuff going on in my life. I suck! I've finished a buddy read for Vicious, it should be on my shelf. Here is my first comment: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I hope you all can use the points. I have to quit, I just don't have the time to read for this challenge. Good luck!

message 789: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5922 comments I am still on Circe I just am struggling to find time to read - is there an X character in that - myths are often good for oddly named characters. I am home from my holiday now but I have to take a friend of my husband's for a surgical procedure tomorrow - then he will be staying with us overnight. I won't get any reading done then because he talks for the whole of the developed nations about nothing. So Circe must be finished today and then Tuesday life takes a more normal attitude

message 790: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5922 comments i have posted in circe will be done soon would love if anyone can pop in and comment - i know you all finished ages ago

How about The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle?

I suppose it is historical, but I also loved How to Stop Time.

I think you've already read most of my top rated books...

message 795: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments Captains - I'm not going to get Pillars of the Earth finished in time to count for the classes. I like it, but at only 17% and 4 hours read already, realistically, it's not going to happen, and it won't add a lot to our points for Astronomy anyway.

It'll still be big book points when I do finish. Better to finish another buddy read instead (even though I think I'll only manage one more).

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5922 comments I don't know what it is Circe is ok but not so good that i want to read read read - yet everyone else seems to have enjoyed it. I think I am challenged out

Yeah, I had to wait ages for both of them.

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 914 comments the Tri-Wizard tasks are posted... they don't look too bad. And I see that there is a third quidditch match as the last part of tri-wizard.

message 800: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5922 comments the third quidditch match starts at 0730 UK time in 11 days - it doesn't say how long it will go on for. I am going to lock myself in the wardrobe for however long it takes
