Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion
Tower Teams VI
>
Team Cedric Diggory

I like the reference to heffalumps in the heffalumpnut, but I don't mind which (or any other names anyone thinks of), they're both great.
I've got The Pillars of the Earth (all 1000 pages of it) on hold from the library, but it may not come in in time, as I'm 2nd in the queue. Or with enough time for me to read it! It could switch out a lower page book if I manage to get it and read it.

No problem! I saw that Elena read Stillhouse Lake which has more water on the cover.

Anyway, we're discussing things in the background, and since what we have in store..."
I'm fine with both ideas. It will be nice for the other reserves to get a chance to play, even if it is only for a few weeks. I'm lucky I got placed :-)

We can definitely use it to bump my Fool Moon book, though it might not end up being in there at the end of the challenge, if Sarah & I both read our mentally pencilled in loooooong books.

@Marie - sounds like an amazing day. I always think it would be a much better experience to actually be there. Eleven hours sounds exhausting though! And such a shame no Murray this year.

nevermind... I must have been tired... the answers are there, I just screwed up a bold tag... what a relief!
Hi Daniela, Roseena! Welcome :)
First things first: can you let us know what your TT shelf is?
Next: where we are in the game.... Basically, we are waiting for Tri-Wizards to start for a whole heap of new fun, but for the moment we are just reading & chatting :)
I don't know how you guys feel about reading and chatting with other people about books, but if you are up for it, Buddy Reads are the best way for us to get points, and usually bring extra insight into the book too. My only word of warning: the mods expect participation, it's not enough just to post once, you have to engage in the conversation.
There are loads of BRs ongoing, or that started since May - and most readers are pretty good about popping back to start up chat even after they've finished. BRs can be found: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... and the thread for seeing if anyone's interested in reading a book you want is here
More structured that BR is the BOM. The rule is that you have to finish the book within a month of the BOM starting, so they are limited to the July BOMs (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...), and any in August too. Again, the expectation is for engagement with the process - either answering the set DQs or discussing points raised by others.
We post our completed books over in the Books Read thread - please please spell out the month, as it makes my head hurt trying to work out the right date, and you don't want to hurt my head, right?!
Once we're friends, I'll send invites to you to find the Badger's Burrow - the Hufflepuff House private area, which we'll be using for Tri-Wiz planning (once the info's up...)
Last bit of admin: Mods've said "If you started it after the start of the challenge 12 May, any book you finish starting 15 July through the end of the challenge can count towards your Tower Team."
I've probably forgotten loads of important stuff, so please do ask if you have any questions!
But most importantly: read, have fun! :)

Welcome Tricia!

So, with new team members, how about some recommendations from your Tower Team reading so far? Any outstanding books you want to urge on everyone? Or howlers?
What books are you looking forward to over the next couple of weeks?

Please welcome your new team member:
Tricia Schneider"
Hi Tricia welcome to the team

I have All My Perfect by Colleen Hoover on my I can not wait to read.
I really want to do a Harry Potter buddy read, but haven't really found a group to do that with. I was looking at the one in this group, might join it.
Roseena, an HP BR here, for this challenge would be perfect - we get 40 points per book for participating! :) and that includes the screenplay scripts too!
Emelie, Melinda, Sarah & I have been going through them - Sarah's at the start of GoF, and I've just finished it, but there are loads of people pottering (hahahaha! sorry. not sorry) through them and chatting too, so dive in!

Sorry for only come here today :D
this is my TT shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
Right now i'm trying to read everything :D
Thank you

It is a tongue-in-cheek romp through 1930s Britain, mainly Wales, and through literary genres (murder, mystery, adventure, comedy, you name it). The MC is also a cross of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and possibly a very clumsy Indiana Jones.
Should you be in the mood for a literary curiosity that is entertaining & doesn't take itself seriously, you may try it.
I am currently re-reading it, later on I'll try to link it properly.
The book I've read during Tower Teams that I rate the most highly is Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie
It's a retelling of Antigone, set in present-day Britain, and explores the tensions of being Muslim in Britain.
Which is a really brief, doesn't scratch the surface, synopsis of the book!
I don't know the original play at all, and the book stands well on its own, but I can imagine that knowing the source material would add to it.
We follow five different connected characters navigating through the ramifications of one decision, building up different views of the characters and reasons for their actions, which end with everyone in shades of murk.
Sorry, I've really not described it well, but it's been nominated - and won - prizes, and is brilliant!
Completely different, but also brilliant is the Greatcoats series by Sebastien de Castell. I listened to these and completely binged on them. Riffing on the Three Musketeers, these have banter, swashbuckling adventures and lots of emotion - I was a wreck listening to the last one! The narrator was brilliant.
Looking forward, I continue to enjoy BRing through HP, and have just started listening to Wuthering Heights (another reread, but it's been a few years since I last read, and the book is always worth picking up. though not for romance!).
I'll sit down at some point in the next couple of days to work out which books to prioritise whilst I'm on hols (Friday, for a week), though as I am with two of the niblings, I don't think I'll achieve my usual volume of reading :-/

I Start reading this book last week, can i count it to points?
Yes.
So far as we've been told, as long as you started it after 12 May, and finish it on or after 15 July we can use it!
I love a good mythological fantasy! I read Circe earlier in the challenge, which was a retelling of Circe's life, and was pretty good. Hope yours is fab!

ok thank you :D

Dark Queen - The Jane Yellowrock series starts out slow...I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue after the first book. However, it ramps up pretty quickly and this most recent book was so so so good.
Not your typical romance, so maybe some of you non-romance readers might enjoy it. :)

i have added this to my TBR but i would have to buy it so may be there a while

New Boy and Hag-Seed both shakespeare retellings
and of course The Count of Monte Cristo
but i have read some real rubbish too particularly when doing Quidditch do not be tempted by It's just four times round the Village: a non runner's journey to her first marathon definitely worse than Death Wore Brown Shorts the last TT howler
Marie, I loved those two too! Have you read Vinegar Girl? It's not quite as good, but worth a try.
I've got Dunbar too, as Well as the Nesbo Macbeth. How did you get on with that one? I totally struggled, and had to put it down, but might need it for SRC

I really liked my reread of A Gentleman in Moscow. If a book stands up to a second reading and is still as good, it's something special. Obviously, all the HPs do this, even my least liked (CoS).
I was surprised by how much I liked Gardens of the Moon in the end. All the reviews said how hard it was to read, and it took until half way to really get a handle on things; but the payoff was worth it. Although I'm a little relieved that the library has no more in the series!

I have read vinegar girl and Dunbar I struggled a bit with Dunbar and i listened to the Nesbo one on audio - i think when the demand for it at the library has slowed down i would like to read it in a hardcopy. It is much longer than the others and difficult when i only listen to audio in car. The narration was excellent in fact i thought it was David Tennant at first

We also celebrate our Ruby Wedding on Sunday so may have designs on alcohol that day - my daughter in law said she won't be offended if we want to go out alone - does she not think i have spent enough time alone with "bless him" in the last 40 years
that'll be a fab weekend, Marie! and having finished SRC, you can relax with some proper good books now too! :)
have a wonderful day on Sunday, with or without Mr M ;-P - ruby is quite an achievement! is that one of the "get a message from Her Maj" anniversaries?

exciting news! Katie & I have chewed over the options we had for cmpleting the classes, and I have now filled in all the arithmancy books, plus the water charm pair (using Unquiet LAND and Stillhouse LAKE)
That means we are done on everything except Astronomy (we need one more, and possibly longer ones too, to up the points) - but I've got a couple of books in my head for that.
Also, we need a name for our magical creature, so I am seeking suggestions!
Info on it:
It is moderately tricky - ranked as 3* = "a competent wizard should cope".
It is found in hotels - the swankier the better, and eats doughnuts
It has a human body, mammoth head (i.e trunk, tusks and ears) with glowing red eyes, bat wings and is feathered (or possibly has feathery chicken legs)
Wizards use it's blood to help make them receptive for divination trances.
Any thoughts?
From me:
the feather-backed heffalumpnut
the greater-nosed doughnupagus
