Considering the era and the Italian culture, could Mrs. Donato have told her husband about the rape?

Phrynne | 605 comments I am pretty sure she could not. Although the fact that he would happily accept a blonde child without any questions beggared belief:)

I agree. She would have been considered untouchable, particularly in the Italian culture and that’s so sad. And her rejection of her own daughter was made even more inexplicable considering her own situation.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1391 comments I do not know much about Italian culture in early 20th century. I think the husband may have turned away from his wife if she told him (after they landed, so he didn't try to kill all those rapists). What a sad predicament.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2239 comments Definitely not! Her husband might have blamed her and either killed her or thrown her out on the streets. She had no recourse but the one she chose.
