Sorcery: The Invocation of Strangeness

FREE TALK AT THE MUSEUM WEDNESDAY 9TH MAY

Irish author Thomas Sheridan will be presenting a special lecture to coincide with the release of his new book Sorcery: the Invocation of Strangeness at the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle.

We will be taken on a journey from the Folk Magic traditions of his homeland, to the world of magic used in media and marketing today. One of the great misconceptions of the Druids’ magical tradition is that the only remaining accounts are contained exclusively within the Classical records. Thomas Sheridan will demonstrate that a vast amount of this mythology was retained with the Irish sources, and how this magical school remained in use for centuries well after the arrival of Christianity.

What part did the magic of Aleister Crowley and William Butler Yeats play in the quest for Irish independence? How did the industrialisation of curses in rural Ireland decimate entire communities? All this and more shall be revealed during the course of this fascinating talk.

Weaving archetypes and archaeology with sociology and mythology, we are promised an intriguing evening of mysteries and folklore delivered in Sheridan’s trademark engaging and often entertaining style. This will be a one-off event in front of a limited audience.
