And I'm laughing at my "100%" because that is such a gross exaggeration. Yes, Andrea, there are many instances of a single year in a title that wouldn't make you think calendar.

e.g. (Harlequin #355)

Not properly, no. The list/table that prevents re-adding a book marked with that link uses ISBN10s.

This can be done by editing the individual book record and replacing the existing primary author with the author NOT A BOOK, or, if all of the items on an author's list are not books, the author can be edited and merged entirely into NOT A BOOK.

can we add a mores specific section on travel guides /other guides
Policy is to use the editor in primary position where known and use a series to link these together

What if the author claim profile in foreign language (in foreign script), do we link to English profile or the Goodread Author profile (in foreign script)?
Note that some author do not speak english.

If the book has won more than one award, list the various awards separated by commas.
The input does this for us, and librarians would be hard put to comply.

Elizabeth (Alaska), I just removed that sentence - thanks for pointing it out!
Mohamed, we just updated the wording for authors with books in multiple languages, here: "Additional author profiles may be linked directly from the About Me section on the author profile."

Here is the discussion link. It's short but too much to copy here.

The rule as I understand it, is: The original record should remain the original record, even if it's not the original cover and should not be swapped with an ACE, even if the ACE is has the original cover.
I reread the manual, but could not find this answer without consulting the discussion page and getting a final answer from a mod

Manual
------------------------------------------------
Adding an alternate-cover edition
If you find that a book with a specific ISBN is already listed with a different cover, it is likely the ISBN was reused for a later/earlier reprinting. If that is the case, you can manually add a new edition to the database that would be considered an 'alternate cover edition.
------------------------------------------------
If you feel, I am the only one who would even think of swapping, then there is no need to add it, as I, myself, now know the rule.

Yes.
Yes.

Acceptable sources for covers - Spanish:
Please delete http://www.publicacionespr.com/cgi-bi... - has been hijacked
Please add http://catalogo.bne.es/uhtbin/webcat - Spanish National Library catalogue, includes covers
Please add Norway:
http://websok.mikromarc.no/Mikromarc3... - public library with very thorough book descriptions, includes covers

lethe, thanks for bringing the out of date site to our attention and the other links - all have been added to the Manual.

Acceptable sources for covers - Finnish:
Please delete: http://monihaku.kirjastot.fi/en/frank... (link is invalid, correct link below)
New link to Frank-monihaku (in English Frank-metasearch): http://monihaku.kirjastot.fi/en/
Also please add this to Finnish Publishers section:
http://www.kirja.fi/
New page (came live in 2014), which collects the newest works of almost all the biggest publishers in Finland in the same place. Also, the publishers manage the page together, so it's legimate source and now most of them use it instead of their own pages to tell about new books published. Unfortunately only avaiable in Finnish.

"default chapters?
(set as default for work)"
Nothing in the Librarians' manual has ever clarified this for me, so I've always just ignored it!
Perhaps now would be a good time to find out?!

In the manual I can only find Anonymous for sacred texts.

We're in the process of updating our Librarian Manual and we’d love your input here! We want to make sure that it’s current, especially when it comes to little-known rules that have been ..."
Hi, Meg! I know this is originally from last year, but there have been several discussions on making changes to the Manual with regard to single comics issues. I understand that this is the proper folder to have that discussion. How do we get Goodreads staff involved? The discussion is in this folder, but over here:

Thanks for your help!

I couldn't figure out how to do it until I found this thread.
The quote concerned was just the word "an"

Maarit, I just added your links (thank you for pointing out the broken one).
^, default chapters are related to an old project, and these will be removed at some point. Sorry for any confusion - it's best to ignore them for now. :) I've added a note that we should clarify this in the Manual until that link is removed from the book edit page.
☆ Carol ☆, we are working on updating our librarian guidelines for quotes, trivia, lists, and quizzes, and we'll post here when that's complete. It's a larger project and may take some additional time, but we'll do our best to get the basics up as soon as possible.
Jim, it looks like you received a response in the discussion you linked to. We are still working on a solution for this, and appreciate your patience.

yaaaay! thank you bunches!

If you want to shelve an edition with your specific cover, . . .
Here is an example of an alternate cover edition of a book: LINK [This is the link where it lead to a page filled with metadata examples]
In the other case of duplicate ISBNs . . .

Oh, I see. Thank you!

2: You should add information about what to do when you come across two one-name-only authors with the same name (for example, there are two authors called Saki). (I know that only super-librarians can separate those, but it would be a good idea to state that in the manual.)
3: Is porn allowed on Goodreads? I've come across a number of all-out pornographic publications (couldn't tell exactly what they were).

All editions of a work should be combined, except adaptations. Adaptations should have the adapting author in primary position so you shouldn't be able to combine them anyway. "Scholars Choice" is a publisher, so there is nothing different about them. Abridged, annotated, illustrated, editions with additional material (such as Norton Critical Editions), and translated editions should all be combined. For nonfiction, 2nd and subsequent editions should be combined with the 1st edition. Collections of short stories should generally have the same stories as each other (I can think of one exception, so there may be others), so be careful about combining such works. Some authors have adapted their own novels as plays, and these should not be combined, but be kept separated from the prose work.

Different authors with a single name can't be disambiguated, not even by a superlibrarian.

These sorts of questions are best asked in the Policies & Practices. This thread is from several years ago, and appears to have served its purpose.

I am *never* suspicious because 100% of the time I see this, it is in reference to the year of publication of a public domain book."
All of the single-year-in-title books I've come across are books that are published annually, such as "best of collections": The Best American Comics 2008, The Best Of America's Test Kitchen 2008: The Year's Best Recipes, Equipment Reviews, And Tastings (Best Of America's Test Kitchen), The Best American Short Stories 2000. (I own a surprising large number of annual cookbooks and yearly anthologies.) There are also some that refer to historical events, such as Victory 1918.
I think the majority of the time, a single year in a title (of an item that shows up on Goodreads) actually is a legitimate book, so I second Elizabeth's suggested changes for the NAB section re. single years in titles.
