Andréa (fernandie) | 152 comments Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: ""A single year in a title (e.g., 2008) often indicates a calendar. Presence of one of these terms does not automatically indicate that the item is not a book, but in most cases you should be suspicious."

I am *never* suspicious because 100% of the time I see this, it is in reference to the year of publication of a public domain book."

All of the single-year-in-title books I've come across are books that are published annually, such as "best of collections": The Best American Comics 2008, The Best Of America's Test Kitchen 2008: The Year's Best Recipes, Equipment Reviews, And Tastings (Best Of America's Test Kitchen), The Best American Short Stories 2000. (I own a surprising large number of annual cookbooks and yearly anthologies.) There are also some that refer to historical events, such as Victory 1918.

I think the majority of the time, a single year in a title (of an item that shows up on Goodreads) actually is a legitimate book, so I second Elizabeth's suggested changes for the NAB section re. single years in titles.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Andréa wrote: "All of the single-year-in-title books I've come across are books that are published annually, such as "best of collections": "

And I'm laughing at my "100%" because that is such a gross exaggeration. Yes, Andrea, there are many instances of a single year in a title that wouldn't make you think calendar.

Deon (deonva) | 3718 comments Imprint information can be added to the edition line, or to the book's description.

e.g. (Harlequin #355)

message 104: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (notemily) | 469 comments I didn't know NABing was different for ASINs and ISBN13s. Interesting. Why is that? Does the "mark as not a book" button not work for editions without an ISBN10?

message 105: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (notemily) | 469 comments Also, what if you want to NAB a calendar but it has been shelved by a user? You can't merge it into the actual book because there is no actual book.

Sophie wrote: "Does the "mark as not a book" button not work for editions without an ISBN10?"

Not properly, no. The list/table that prevents re-adding a book marked with that link uses ISBN10s.

Earlier in the entry:
This can be done by editing the individual book record and replacing the existing primary author with the author NOT A BOOK, or, if all of the items on an author's list are not books, the author can be edited and merged entirely into NOT A BOOK.

message 108: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (notemily) | 469 comments So you don't worry about the people who have shelved it, just change it to NOT A BOOK?

message 109: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
The only other option would be to delete it. Which would remove it from their shelves entirely.

message 110: by Mike (new)

Mike | 119 comments But if it has an ISBN, and you delete it, it will get reentered during the next auto run!

can we add a mores specific section on travel guides /other guides

Policy is to use the editor in primary position where known and use a series to link these together

Mohamed Yosri (yosri) Sorry if I am beating a dead horse, when updating manual, can this issues be addressed clearly:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

What if the author claim profile in foreign language (in foreign script), do we link to English profile or the Goodread Author profile (in foreign script)?

Note that some author do not speak english.

Elizabeth (Alaska) In the section for Literary Awards, the second sentence needs to be deleted:

If the book has won more than one award, list the various awards separated by commas.

The input does this for us, and librarians would be hard put to comply.

message 116: by Meg (last edited Feb 03, 2015 01:58PM) (new)

Meg Paula and Sophie, good point. We'll work on adding a section about travel guides, and I'll update once we've done so.

Elizabeth (Alaska), I just removed that sentence - thanks for pointing it out!

Mohamed, we just updated the wording for authors with books in multiple languages, here: "Additional author profiles may be linked directly from the About Me section on the author profile."

message 117: by Mike (new)

Mike | 119 comments Can the term "bibliography" be added to the first paragraph in the "Page Numbering" section.

Mike | 119 comments Can this rule can be added to the manual in the Creating ACE's section

Here is the discussion link. It's short but too much to copy here.

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

The rule as I understand it, is: The original record should remain the original record, even if it's not the original cover and should not be swapped with an ACE, even if the ACE is has the original cover.

I reread the manual, but could not find this answer without consulting the discussion page and getting a final answer from a mod

message 121: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
The manual specifies that the ACE may be either for a "later/earlier reprinting".

message 122: by Mike (last edited Mar 28, 2015 04:32AM) (new)

Mike | 119 comments Yes, it's clear you can leave the original and make an ACE; however, it does not exclude you from swapping them.

Manual
------------------------------------------------
Adding an alternate-cover edition

If you find that a book with a specific ISBN is already listed with a different cover, it is likely the ISBN was reused for a later/earlier reprinting. If that is the case, you can manually add a new edition to the database that would be considered an 'alternate cover edition.
------------------------------------------------

If you feel, I am the only one who would even think of swapping, then there is no need to add it, as I, myself, now know the rule.

Jennifer (jennifer2025) | 36 comments Forgive me if this has already been mentioned here, but tonight I've been looking through the librarian manual and cannot find an answer to this question: Is the Nook "ISBN" correctly stated in a book's data page when it begins with 294? It's a long number and the computer warned me tonight that it may be incorrect. I've seen 294 numbers several times on other books, so I left it alone tonight, particularly since it said "may be." It was for the book mentioned in this post. The manual mentions the 294 number, but doesn't specifically say if it is valid as the ISBN or not. That is something that would be helpful if you clarified it in the manual.

Yes.

Elizabeth (Alaska) There is nothing in the manual about default descriptions, how they apply, and how to use/change. There needs to be a section on this topic.

Acceptable sources for covers - Spanish:

Please delete http://www.publicacionespr.com/cgi-bi... - has been hijacked

Please add http://catalogo.bne.es/uhtbin/webcat - Spanish National Library catalogue, includes covers

Please add Norway:

http://websok.mikromarc.no/Mikromarc3... - public library with very thorough book descriptions, includes covers

message 127: by Meg (new)

Meg Hey - thanks, Elizabeth. That's a great point and I'd completely overlooked it. I'll add it to my list and update here once it's in the Manual.

lethe, thanks for bringing the out of date site to our attention and the other links - all have been added to the Manual.

https://www.goodreads.com/help/show/2...

Acceptable sources for covers - Finnish:
Please delete: http://monihaku.kirjastot.fi/en/frank... (link is invalid, correct link below)
New link to Frank-monihaku (in English Frank-metasearch): http://monihaku.kirjastot.fi/en/

Also please add this to Finnish Publishers section:
http://www.kirja.fi/
New page (came live in 2014), which collects the newest works of almost all the biggest publishers in Finland in the same place. Also, the publishers manage the page together, so it's legimate source and now most of them use it instead of their own pages to tell about new books published. Unfortunately only avaiable in Finnish.

Hi, Meg! I know this is originally from last year, but there have been several discussions on making changes to the Manual with regard to single comics issues. I understand that this is the proper folder to have that discussion. How do we get Goodreads staff involved? The discussion is in this folder, but over here:

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2280 comments Could something be put in manual about how to edit a quote that doesn't need to be edited by a super librarian?

I couldn't figure out how to do it until I found this thread.
The quote concerned was just the word "an"

message 134: by Meg (new)

Meg Hello everyone!

Maarit, I just added your links (thank you for pointing out the broken one).

^, default chapters are related to an old project, and these will be removed at some point. Sorry for any confusion - it's best to ignore them for now. :) I've added a note that we should clarify this in the Manual until that link is removed from the book edit page.

☆ Carol ☆, we are working on updating our librarian guidelines for quotes, trivia, lists, and quizzes, and we'll post here when that's complete. It's a larger project and may take some additional time, but we'll do our best to get the basics up as soon as possible.

Jim, it looks like you received a response in the discussion you linked to. We are still working on a solution for this, and appreciate your patience.

message 138: by Z-squared (new)

Z-squared | 8576 comments Dunno if I should bother bumping this old thread or posting a new thread... To the How to merge two identical editions section, can a warning be added? Something to the affect of "Before making any changes, please check the librarian changelogs of both suspected duplicates before merging to determine if either cover has been deleted/replaced against Goodreads policies"? And, I dunno, bold it. Or make it red. In 1000-pt font? :D

message 139: by Meg (new)

Meg Hey Z-squared! Please continue posting any suggestions in this thread - we're still monitoring it. And yes, great idea - just added that, and in bold. :)

Joanie Chevalier (joaniec) I wanted to follow the link regarding adding a new cover image but it lead to something about metadata:

If you want to shelve an edition with your specific cover, . . .

Here is an example of an alternate cover edition of a book: LINK [This is the link where it lead to a page filled with metadata examples]

In the other case of duplicate ISBNs . . .

Maja Lange | 12 comments 1: I'd really like for there to be a much more detailed guide to combining books. Explanations/clarifications for dummies. :) Specifically, quite simply, I could use a lot more information regarding what constitutes "different publications of the same book". Should illustrated editions be kept separate from those not illustrated? And what about annotated editions? Scholar's Choice Editions? And so on.

2: You should add information about what to do when you come across two one-name-only authors with the same name (for example, there are two authors called Saki). (I know that only super-librarians can separate those, but it would be a good idea to state that in the manual.)

3: Is porn allowed on Goodreads? I've come across a number of all-out pornographic publications (couldn't tell exactly what they were).

Elizabeth (Alaska) Maja wrote: "I'd really like for there to be a much more detailed guide to combining books. Explanations/clarifications for dummies. :) Specifically, quite simply, I could use a lot more information regarding w..."

All editions of a work should be combined, except adaptations. Adaptations should have the adapting author in primary position so you shouldn't be able to combine them anyway. "Scholars Choice" is a publisher, so there is nothing different about them. Abridged, annotated, illustrated, editions with additional material (such as Norton Critical Editions), and translated editions should all be combined. For nonfiction, 2nd and subsequent editions should be combined with the 1st edition. Collections of short stories should generally have the same stories as each other (I can think of one exception, so there may be others), so be careful about combining such works. Some authors have adapted their own novels as plays, and these should not be combined, but be kept separated from the prose work.

Different authors with a single name can't be disambiguated, not even by a superlibrarian.

These sorts of questions are best asked in the Policies & Practices. This thread is from several years ago, and appears to have served its purpose.
