Kathryn Casey | 66 comments Thanks, Gem. Good to hear. Yes, Eric's ego played a big part in this tragedy.

And thank you again Lady Belleza, for inviting me to participate. I didn't realize that this is your first group read! Very cool.

My pleasure. I picked up Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders today at the library to read while we're traveling. I hope Bugliosi's writing is a well done as yours, if not I'm going to be disappointed!

Kathryn Casey | 66 comments Oh, Gem, thanks so much. That made me smile. I think you'll love that book. I read it years ago, and it is very good. Enjoy your vacation!

Kathryn Casey | 66 comments By the way, I love libraries. One of my favorite haunts.

I didn't want to say, I got your book from the library, in my defense, I live in studio apartment in Manhattan. Not a lot of room for books. And yarn, and I love to knit so ........

Kathryn Casey | 66 comments That's what libraries are for, Lady Belleza! I'm glad they had the book for you. I don't know how to knit, but that sounds like fun, too!

I once heard an author say that libraries accounted for 40% of sales of his books. Do you agree, Kathryn?

message 158: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Casey | 66 comments No clue, Koren, but that's certainly possible. Libraries are just wonderful places. They're like the temples of books.

Fishface | 18848 comments That's a good way of putting it.

There's knitting books in the library. Just sayin'

Kathryn Casey | 66 comments Very true! I should do that while I watch TV with my husband in the evenings. It's probably better than playing word games on my iPad.

I love to knit. I'm not got at it yet, but I'm making a lot of dish clothes for practice. I'm taking some knitting on vacation too.

Fishface | 18848 comments If you find you don't like knitting, try crochet. Knitting and crocheting are like geometry and algebra -- people normally like one or the other, not both.

Erin | 376 comments I tried Crocheting once, it was not for me. I've been meaning to try knitting though.

True, don't love geometry, but love algebra. I'm sadly not patient enough for knitting or crocheting.

I have In Plain Sight right next to me, but good golly I've got a lot on my plate right now. I'm in the middle of relocating and the best laid plans has me short on reading time this month.

message 166: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Casey | 66 comments No worries, Stacey. I hope the move goes well.

True, I can knit practically anything, but crocheting is a chore. I'll do it for things like swiffer dusting pads, but I don't enjoy it.

Fishface | 18848 comments I feel the same way about knitting that you do about crocheting. It makes my head hurt just thinking about it.

I used to crochet a lot when I worked night shift. I must be burnt out on it cause I just cant seem to get back into it.

Finally finished the book. And I declare this group read a success!

I have one comment, in the book someone said they didn't understand the prosecution of Eric because he wasn't a 'repeat offender', except he had previously been disciplined for misappropriation of funds. So wouldn't that make him one?

I haven't written my review yet, but I did give the book 4 stars.

Fishface | 18848 comments IIRC, he was disciplined but not adjudicated, meaning not (yet) criminally prosecuted. There's a shade of difference. In the hairsplitting mind of an attorney, it would be a much, much bigger difference.

Career criminals see it the same way -- legalistically. They can be raping children or robbing banks all the livelong day but they don't describe themselves as felons until it's in black and white on their rap sheets.

Kathryn Casey | 66 comments Wonderful to hear that you enjoyed the book, Lady Belleza. Thanks everyone for the ratings!

I enjoyed the knitting conversation. I should try it!

Eric was never tried on the misappropriation of funds for the law library. He'd been charged, but it was never adjudicated. The theft of the computer monitors actually came first. Despite Eric's conviction for the monitors, Mike was still talking about trying him on the law library charges shortly before Mark was murdered.

Finally took this back to the library, which reminded me I never wrote my review. Also had to pay a hefty fine. Gah! Could have bought the book for what I paid.

Erin | 376 comments Haha! We've all been there. I think my library paid for its new wing with my late fees.

Koren (koren56) | 1601 comments Erin wrote: "Haha! We've all been there. I think my library paid for its new wing with my late fees."

Our library doesn't have fines anymore. I used to worry about getting books back in time but now if they are a few days late I dont worry about it and the computer automatically renews them. They started this the first of the year. I wonder how it is working out for them.

Also apparently you can pay in installments on your fine. Anyway, this time I wrote in my calendar to return my new book so I hopefully won’t run up a fine with this book.
