Robin P I'm new to this group and I see you recently finished this book. I listened to it read by Colin Firth. Of course he was great and I agree that the writing style is masterful, but I also agree with those of you who found it sad, the characters self-destructive, and that the ending was sort of "cheating".

A series of books about religion in ordinary life that is much more interesting is the Starbridge series by Susan Howatch. The characters are often church leaders and she writes so that you can see the characters' development as being directed by the divine - or not. And they are page turners!

Don't know them, but they sound interesting!
I'll look for them then; some titles to begin with?

Thanks found. Don't know when I'll be able o reading t, but I've got it!!!!

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) I am finding this book stifling. It's two-dimensional world. And very very 1950's. These people apparently are limited to living in self-induced pain, or living in guilt pain with god. They can't see beyond any choice which does not involve self-flagellation.

Sacrifice is their highest calling. Balderdash.

Did Greene wear hair shirts?
