Yes, and that's even more proof that Morpheus belongs with Alyssa, not with Ivory. Moth wings and butterfly wings match better than moth wings and swan wings. Just imagine if Morph and Ivory ever had a child, how the poor creature's wings would look like?! Not that we know it is even a possibility for them to reproduce. We still know nothing about how full-blooded netherlings are born, if they are born at all.

With Morpheus and Alyssa there wouldn't be such a problem, because moth and butterfly wings look alike. Opaque black and gauzy white, shadow and light, but the shape is very similar, and A.G. said the jewels on Alyssa's wings can also display her moods, which is yet another thing she has in common with Morpheus, because that way they will be able to read each other's moods. I'm really curious what kind of wings (view spoiler)

I can so see Alyssa getting completely jealous of the poor cat because Morpheus is lavishing all sorts of attention on to it, ignoring her in the process and the smothered cat in turn is trying to run away from all of the love . Morpheus just being oblivious to it all.

message 218: by Natalia (new)

Natalia (natalia_g) | 809 comments Morpheus is never oblivious to anything. Oblivious Morpheus would be OOC. Also, I don't think Morpheus will ever ignore Alyssa over a cat. She is always his first priority.

message 219: by Liz (new)

Liz | 46 comments I agree that it would probably never happen, but in my head I like to think of their life slowed down a bit. I mean like currently they are just beings full of sexual tension and have such a hot relationship that is going to continue for years (and aren't we all going to be so happy for that ;) ), but maybe when they have the baby.
Having someone else in their little love bubble would change their dynamic some giving us more sweet and tender moments instead of pure sexiness. I am definitely not complaining though x)

Anyway that was kind of where my line of thought was coming from, but i know that Morpheus would never be that careless with Alyssa.

A.G. Howard (aghoward) | 1618 comments Natalia wrote: "either they are not born in the "traditional" sense of the word, like you said, or they are born with minds of adults, skipping the childhood altogether. Because even when Morpheus "became" a child, his mind was still not a child's mind. Whatever the book said, he didn't think and act like an average boy. He was too focused on his goal, too adult-like. "

Nailed it, Natalia! Except for one thing, like @Nessy said, Morpheus *did* think like a child (view spoiler).

So mentally he was a child (although he never lost sight of why he was inside of her dreams), so there was an innocence to their relationship which allowed him to experience playing and games in ways he wouldn't have as an adult.

(view spoiler)

This "childhood without being a child" is touched on/explained a little more in Ensnared, too.

*Some* netherlings (though not all), may be born in more natural ways and look like miniature versions of what they will be, but they're cynical, maniacal and manipulative from day one. They lack innocence.

So to get really technical? It's the "childlike" imagination that they're lacking in that world. Yes, they can come up with strategies, fantasize about how they want things to be, even design fancy clothes. But that's not the same as a child's imagination. When two children are playing together and imagining things, there's a magic being evoked that is lost sight of in adulthood. It's the innocence and imagination combined that sparks this powerful magic.

And if you never experienced that, then you can't recall it and use it (view spoiler).

Wow! Haha. Long answer there, but it was fun getting all of that out in writing so you guys can see my world as I did. ;)

Also, if you take all of my explanation above and apply it to this Carroll poem, it has a whole new meaning to it:

A childish story take,
And with a gentile hand
Lay it where Childhood dreams are twined
In memory's mystic band...

:D

Is there supposed to be another riddle to this poem?

Again, @ A.G. thank you for such a detailed reply! And if not all nethelings are born, will we ever learn how they come to be? Did Ivory really hatch from an egg? Because she can turn into a swan... Because, obviously, Morpheus wasn't born in a traditional way, since he came from a cocoon after the metamorphosis.

And, in the light of the September teasers/quotes, I hope that part (view spoiler) doesn't mean that you can just easily replace Morpheus with Jeb in the prophesy and call it a day. Please, A.G. don't do this to Morpheus! It will kill him! And (view spoiler)

And Alyssa actually met Jeb when she was 11 and he was 13, so it's *sort* of considered their childhood.

A.G. Howard (aghoward) | 1618 comments Aw. He was as innocent as he could be, considering his horrible childhood. (view spoiler) It's all going to be subjective according to every reader's own definition of things, according to who they like most, you know?

Something I said on my FB threads, and I still stand by it, I'm pretty sure that the intensity of the mothlings hatred for Jeb has less to do w/him as a person and more to do w/the fact that he's the one thing standing in the way of their guy getting his girl.

And they all want their Mothman to be happy. Which they should want that. But I do think Jeb gets dealt a pretty tough hand sometimes over things he doesn't necessarily deserve.

True about being biased. It is very interesting how different people view the same characters in such different, often polar ways. And I don't measure immortals the same way I do humans.

Almost all supernatural guys we read about in YA are either hundreds or even millennia years old. And I love when they act that way. It is never plausible when they appear to behave like teenagers. Immortality must take its tall on characters.

It certainly adds to the hatred a great deal, I won't even deny it. But I Splintered we meet Jeb before we meet Morpheus, and even back then I didn't like him at all. Sorry, I don't want to upset you, but I want to be honest.

Overprotective human guys of the "longtime best friends" variety in fantasy books just don't work for me. And they always choose the most inopportune moment to declare their feelings to the heroine, just when there is the perspective of a mind-blowing, chemistry-packed romance with a supernatural love interest. Of course people/fans feel threatened.

And Morpheus is one of the best supernatural characters/romantic interests in all of YA.
AND HE IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE.

message 240: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Stender-moore | 36 comments @ Natalia
I second that wholeheartedly. What's the point of a supernatural love interest if you don't choose said love interest? I just want to shake the main character and show them how crazy they're being.

"...the intensity of the mothlings hatred for Jeb has less to do w/him as a person and more to do w/the fact that he's the one thing standing in the way of their guy getting his girl."

Well, yes, but why do we want our guy to get the girl?

Because we hate Jeb. :S

A vicious circle, that is. Vicious and teethed. With jabberlock boxes. I'm going to stop before I spoil something XD

Then again, my personality is against his advice-giving a lot of the time. I don't like people telling me what not to do. I'd rather someone told me to do something than not do something. If that... made sense... Which it didn't.

Random terrible analogy- Rather my mother told me to take out the trash than to not go online and talk to you lovelies.

I'd rather be told to do homework than to not date someone. Even though I'm not dating anyone to begin with.

...Why do my analogies end up like this.

So maybe the problem isn't even either of the guys, it's the fan's personalities clashing with Jeb's or Morph's. Some people just like a certain type of guy better because the way they act matches theirs or their abs are nummy

Um... Yeah.

Well, I kind of disagree. I may hate Jeb because he is standing in the way, but it has nothing to do with why I want "our" guy to get the girl. message 245: by A.G. (last edited Sep 03, 2014 07:04PM) (new)

A.G. Howard (aghoward) | 1618 comments WOW. Did I open a can of worms. Okay, so, since we're all being honest here, I'm going to tell everyone how I feel about both guys. This is a one time post only, and I won't get pulled into any "debates" over who's better. It's just I want you to see, from the characters' creator's perspective, what I intended w/these two guys.

The way I wrote Jeb was never meant to be construed as pushy or oppressive to Alyssa. Even though he’s protective, it's because he saw his mom and sister abused for years. Of course that kind of violence would shape someone. It would either make them violent themselves, or make their defensive tendencies overblown in an effort to keep everyone safe. So it comes from a place of sincere concern and love and trying to overcompensate for not being able to help his family. Not because he wants to control her.

And just so no one thinks I'm taking sides, I've had to defend Morpheus plenty, too.

Some readers say he's "a horrible person" because he's manipulative to Alyssa, always lies to her and pulls everyone's strings. But, he isn't exactly a human, so that's why he makes a *horrible* person. Being a netherling means an entirely different world view and an absence of mortal ethics. Netherlings are of an ends justifies the means mentality. Although Ivory appears to have risen above that, and even Morph has moments of compassion and empathy, especially where Alyssa's concerned, if it doesn't interfere too much with his plans. ;)

I no longer visit the Team threads, and try not to defend either guy too often, because I don't want to be a part of a big huge discussion (if this leads to one, please keep it on the battlefield/Team threads--not here where it's all about the characters' fun, sexy, or cute quirks, and not in the Ensnared quotes threads, PLEASE. I have to be able to go there and post teasers safely *coughs*).

This was just a glimpse inside my writer's mind. This is how I meant for my guys to be perceived when I wrote them. What people read into it and take away from it, I have absolutely no control over because it's all subjective and very personal to the reader.

But now you know how *I* see them as the author, and their strengths and weaknesses only make me love them more. ;) Both of them.
