Jim | 21809 comments Interesting blog post from somebody caught up in the Amazon Prime Reading Program

He got the following email (by the way the links don't work)

"Hello,

We’d like to invite you to include the title listed below in the UK Prime Reading programme on amazon.co.uk for a 90 day period. Prime Reading is intended to promote authors and their books to Amazon’s most engaged customers. As part of this promotion, Amazon Prime members are able to borrow an unlimited number of books, from a frequently rotated list of titles at no additional fee beyond their Prime subscription. We have a limited number of spots available in the UK programme and are delighted to offer you the opportunity to increase visibility for your title. If enrolled, you will be notified via email when your title is included. In lieu of royalties for this programme, we are offering a one-time payment of the amount listed below, to be paid following the completion of the promotion.

Title: Undercover: Operation Julie – The Inside Story (ASIN: B073ZK8JHW) || Payment Amount: £200

In order to participate, the title must be enrolled in both the programme and KDP Select for the duration of the promotional period. While you will not receive royalties for Prime Reading, your book will remain available for sale and will still qualify for unit sales royalties and pages read compensation for Kindle Unlimited. If a customer is in Kindle Unlimited and a Prime member, the pages read will count towards Kindle Unlimited. While included in Prime Reading, your book will not be available in Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.

To agree to participate in Prime Reading, please go here: https://books.au1qualtrics.com/jfe/fo..., enter this unique code: ZAGK7V4XPGYMX and select “I agree”. Please review this link and indicate your response by Monday, October 30th.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out via: https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishin.... We appreciate your discretion in not sharing details of this programme. Thank you for your time. We look forward to introducing your work to even more readers.

Sincerely,
The Kindle Direct Publishing Team"

Obviously I'm not somebody Amazon wants to promote

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments I guess the trick is to somehow get one of their editors to discover you - and propose you for inclusion.

This used to be the God-like power of agents. Now it's anonymous Amazon editors who can't be influenced by a direct appeal, however well queried.

I sometimes feel like the pit is getting deeper.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'm sure you're not the only one feeling that, Alicia,

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments Well, there ARE more books for sale every day, and with Amazon, they don't disappear from the 'shelves' after 3-6 weeks, as books in bookstores do.

It is still true that most people read the books they buy or borrow only once, and that they need more! new! stories! to feed their appetite.

It used to feel as if an author didn't also have to be a shill (whether that was true; probably because the publishers used to do a better job of publicity for the preselected few authors they published). But now we all have to become hawkers. Even the authors published by traditional publishers are complaining they get little in the way of publicity from them.

From the reader side, I am having a hard time finding books I like - from an ever-widening selection. I think I'm getting cantankerous.

Jim | 21809 comments Yes I know how you feel.
I confess that whilst I buy books off Amazon, I don't go to Amazon to find books.
The two fiction in my heap are both by personal recommendation, one from Patti and the other from a friend not on goodreads.

In no case did I look at any reviews or ratings because for me they'd been reviewed and rated because Patti had said, "I think you'll like it"

But there are countless millions of books out there that I'll miss. And looking on Amazon is a waste of time.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Only two in your heap?

I know of a shed load of books you'd enjoy, Jim. ;)

Jim | 21809 comments these are the top two
And it's the non-fiction pile
The non-fiction pile has ground to a halt because I got two books to review and it struck me that I ought to read two others and review them as a foursome!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Now that's just kinky.

absolutely
and given the nature of Spartan life, probably the only frisson of excitement anybody will get!

Darren Humphries (darrenhf) | 6903 comments Visibility is key on the internet in every way. There are more opportunities than there ever were, but it's getting increasingly hard to be heard over the crowd unless you have paid people advertising it for you. That's the new job for publishers.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments Possibly more work on marketing to the right niche? I can't believe how many readers are out there.

I wish I could figure out how to market to the readers who didn't like The Goldfinch, but only for certain specific reasons - not liking the end, thinking it went on too long in certain areas, a couple more like that (read the negative reviews for the unsatisfied customers).

Those readers bought it, thought they would like it, and found it lacking in particular ways.

I'm not saying I'm sure I can satisfy them - just that it would be an awesome demographic to be able to market to directly.

I hope that becomes more possible!

Joseph | 19 comments Interesting about that payment amount - does anyone know they only select already well-selling books (i.e. making more than that in sales in 90 days) and bank on the exposure/fact that these are a different pool of readers to get the uptake?

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments I find this very interesting but I don't know what to say that would make headway in this ongoing and increasing dilemma of invisibility. I think, as someone has probably already said, there must be a case for people setting themselves up as personal marketers for authors. They could have 20 authors and take a 10% cut.

Any takers?

Or does this just mean that hardworking writers have yet another expense?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I reckon Rosemary and I should share 1% of all of 'our' authors sales.

In ten years would could treat the group to an entire donut!

Plain. Not jelly.

:D

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments Is that a shared doughnut? Or do we all get one?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Shared!

Donut shavings!

If you're offering, or know someone who is, PM me. I'd be interested in someone who would execute a marketing plan, and be able to write copy and know how to runs ads. NOT someone who just wants to tweet or do their own thing. I'm getting a customized marketing plan, and I don't know where the energy will come to execute it.
