In the one book I remember there is a golf tournament and the prize is a boat. The dead body is found on the boat. The sheriff has just found out that she is pregnant by a cop in another town. She lives in a small apartment over a store of some kind. While solving the murder she is trying to decide what to do about the baby. She has a tough relationship with her mother. I think her mother owns a bar or works in one. She doesn't really like her job, but feels like she is unable to do anything else. Not sure when I read this book but it has been a number of years.
