The Giver
discussion
At what age did you guys read this book?
I read an excerpt when I was about 12, but I didn't read the book before I was 16. I really enjoyed it even though it's a children's book, but I haven't read the last three books.
I read it last year, when I was 12 years old. A really good book, that's truly good for all ages. The minimum age limit would probably be 10. I think no one younger should read it only because of the mention of death. From there, all ages 10 and up are recommended to read it. It's a good book that will have you to the end.
I read this book when I was 12 and in sixth grade for school. Immediately after that I read the rest of the series.
I read it when I was in grade 8 (14 years old) it was assigned reading. Unlike the other students at that time, I thought the book was great.. then in the last 3 months i have discovered its series! I'm planning to re read The Giver again. So excited to get started on it! (I'm 17 btw)
I read it in Fifth Grade, so I was probably 10 or 11. Re-reading this book is probably a good idea as there are probably a lot of things that I missed, and other things that I could've taken away from the story.
I read this book when I was 18 years old, and I think I understood what the author was trying to convey in the story.
Read this in my 7th grade English. I was able to understand its moral and also saw the movie adaption which was not really accurate to the book

I'd seen the telly adverts, and the put me off seeing it, but I am still somewhat curious about it. I wonder though, if they missed, in the depiction, the moral and societal quandaries to which the author alluded, as is my guess. Could you (or anyone who has seen the film) speak to this?
12you have to read in this order
The Giver(Giver series)
Gathering Blue(Companion to the Giver)
Messenger (Gathering Blue sequel(companion to the Giver))
Son(Giver Series)
I just downloaded the other books and am looking forward to continuing in this story. I understand it was for school age children to start minds thinking. I want my grandsons to read it and tell me what they think.
I think I must have been about twelve/thirteen maybe eleven. I never read the others and since I'm now twenty I probably won't. Its a really good YA novel though.
Its worth reading at any age for the record I'm just probably too lazy six years down the track to bother. Particularly since from what I hear the squeals aren't as good.
I read the Giver for the first time in 5th grade. My English teacher had recommended it to me since I love Gossamer. Then, in seventh grade, we read it as a class.
I first read this in 1st grade with my best friend. At the time, I didn't understand it and thought it was a wonderful book. Over the years, I have read it at least three more times. It's even better now that I have met Ms. Lowry in person.
Once at eleven and then again at fifteen
I read the book a few months ago, back in the day when I was 14. But I did not like it. It was way to slow for me. I couldn't continue and I think that if I read it at an earlier age I would have enjoyed it better. But that's only because my tastes have changed over the years.
