Melissa I read it in college, in preparation for working with a class of Freshmen at a local high school. I read it really fast because I was so absorbed by it. Read Ender's Game for that same school, but a different class.

I was 14.

message 107: by Bodhi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bodhi I guess we read it in school for 6th grade. I was 13. It was a fine age, but I got more understanding from the story when I was around 16 and reading it on my own.

message 108: by Emi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Emi Glass I was in second grade, so I was 7 or 8.

message 109: by Bodhi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bodhi The perfect window is 12-18. I think it has the most impact on those people.

Hafza 10 years old. I read it in book club.

Are you home-schooled?

message 116: by Ashlee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ashlee Willis I read it when it first came out (1993), when I was still in grade school. It was an immediate favorite, and one of my inspirations for becoming a writer myself. I've read Messenger and Gathering Blue (both good, too!), but haven't yet had the chance to read Son. Definitely looking forward to it!!

I was in a book club at ten, too. Not home-schooled.

Zara I believe I was 13 when I read it. My brother found it somewhere in our house (to this day we don't know to whom it belonged or where it came from) and read it. He told me it was reaaallly good and that I should read it. It was summer and I had nothing to do so I decided to just give it a shot. It. Was. Amazing. I just loved the originality and the whole idea of a world without color or pain. It truly is a book I would recommend to anyone. Planning on reading it again before I see the movie. Lol, Its been 4 years so im a bit fuzzy on details.

Natalie Read I first read it when i was 9, before that i never really cared about books, this book made me love reading.

Alessandra Pacheco The first time I read this book was in the 6th grade, about age 11. I am now 16 and have read it about 3 times.

message 124: by Saray (new) - rated it 5 stars

Saray I read this when I was in fith grade so like 11 or something.

Michelle It's required 6th Grade reading at our middle school, so my son read it last May-June and I finished it (at age 49) over the summer so we could talk about it (and before the movie came out.) We both thought it was a great book.

We finished Son on audiobook together this July, really enjoyed it too.

May see the movie this Labor Day weekend...

When I first read The Giver, I was 13. Personally I think that people should read it at 11-13;it's a great book for a school reading assignment. But like the Lighting Thief, people can read The Giver at any age.

Ladasia Bryant i was 9 actually... i did not read it by choice of course i was in accelerated reading group at my school and this was the book we read. But i loved it so much i finished the other two books soon after and i re read the books all the time! (i have not read son yet tho i want too!)

Jennifer I read it when I was about eleven (five years ago), and then I read Gathering Blue (supposedly book two) the following year. Honestly, there seemed to be a major disconnect between the two stories- Jonas isn't in the second book, for example, and it's about a different society than The Giver was about altogether...I don't know, maybe reading the last two books would clear things up a bit, but I just haven't gotten around to it.

Destiny so right now i'm thirteen and i read it last year so .....12

message 130: by Emily (last edited Sep 07, 2014 03:06PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Emily Nicholas-ornbaum I read it in the Sixth grade when I was 11 years old... (I'm now 14 and a freshman)

I understood the entire book completely from references to themes..

Sara I first read The Giver in fourth or fifth grade. Actually our teacher read it to us and it was AWESOME!!!! I read it again in middle school and it was still awesome!!!!

message 132: by Amber (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amber I read this book at the age of 12 and I loooved it!

message 133: by Alex (new) - rated it 5 stars

Alex D First time I read it I was 9, and it stayed my favourite book for years to come. Since then I've probably read it another 7 or times.

Jamiere I read it just a month ago and I have to say I loved it as a stand alone book.

message 135: by Mary (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mary McDonald First read it a few weeks ago. I'm in 40s. My kids both read it in High school at 15 and 16.

message 136: by Tammy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tammy Powell I read The Giver in my 30's and it is my favorite children's book. I did not care for Son as it did not seem to fit with The Giver and came much later than the publish date of The Giver. I liked Messenger and Gathering Blue, but to me, The Giver is more of an independent stand alone book.

I had my son read it for the 1st time and he just started 6th grade. He says it is now his favorite book!

message 137: by Eva (new) - added it

Eva I read this book last month, and I'm 14.

Heather Iagulli I first read it in 7th or 8th grade so I was about 12 or 13. I remember being upset with the ending and just recently found out there are more in the series so I think I'm going to reread this one and then read the rest.

Laurisa Reyes About 36

message 140: by Susan (last edited Sep 11, 2014 01:57PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Susan Bernhardt I read this to my sons when they were in elementary and middle school. I was in my early 30's then. I loved this book! I gave it 5 stars.

It was best as a stand alone.

message 141: by Megan (new) - rated it 5 stars

Megan Maloney I read this in 8th grade so I was 14... It was an amazing book! Love the movie!!

message 142: by Amanda (new) - rated it 4 stars

Amanda 12 for a 7th grade class read

message 143: by Nancy (new) - added it

Nancy Yob I read it last week in two days because my 15 year old niece had read it and wanted me to see the movie with her. I'm 53. I thought the book was great. I didn't agree with some of the changes that the movie made, but of course, I rarely think that the movie is better than the book!

message 144: by Ammo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ammo 13
also the rest of the series has nothing to do with jonas......its because its a quartet not really a series as such
