13summer reading project that i was reluctant to read, but once i started it became and remains one of my favorite.
I read it in college, in preparation for working with a class of Freshmen at a local high school. I read it really fast because I was so absorbed by it. Read Ender's Game for that same school, but a different class.
I guess we read it in school for 6th grade. I was 13. It was a fine age, but I got more understanding from the story when I was around 16 and reading it on my own.

Are you home-schooled?
I read it when it first came out (1993), when I was still in grade school. It was an immediate favorite, and one of my inspirations for becoming a writer myself. I've read Messenger and Gathering Blue (both good, too!), but haven't yet had the chance to read Son. Definitely looking forward to it!!

I was in a book club at ten, too. Not home-schooled.
I believe I was 13 when I read it. My brother found it somewhere in our house (to this day we don't know to whom it belonged or where it came from) and read it. He told me it was reaaallly good and that I should read it. It was summer and I had nothing to do so I decided to just give it a shot. It. Was. Amazing. I just loved the originality and the whole idea of a world without color or pain. It truly is a book I would recommend to anyone. Planning on reading it again before I see the movie. Lol, Its been 4 years so im a bit fuzzy on details.
I first read it when i was 9, before that i never really cared about books, this book made me love reading.
The first time I read this book was in the 6th grade, about age 11. I am now 16 and have read it about 3 times.
It's required 6th Grade reading at our middle school, so my son read it last May-June and I finished it (at age 49) over the summer so we could talk about it (and before the movie came out.) We both thought it was a great book.We finished Son on audiobook together this July, really enjoyed it too.
May see the movie this Labor Day weekend...
When I first read The Giver, I was 13. Personally I think that people should read it at 11-13;it's a great book for a school reading assignment. But like the Lighting Thief, people can read The Giver at any age.
i was 9 actually... i did not read it by choice of course i was in accelerated reading group at my school and this was the book we read. But i loved it so much i finished the other two books soon after and i re read the books all the time! (i have not read son yet tho i want too!)
I read it when I was about eleven (five years ago), and then I read Gathering Blue (supposedly book two) the following year. Honestly, there seemed to be a major disconnect between the two stories- Jonas isn't in the second book, for example, and it's about a different society than The Giver was about altogether...I don't know, maybe reading the last two books would clear things up a bit, but I just haven't gotten around to it.
I read it in the Sixth grade when I was 11 years old... (I'm now 14 and a freshman)I understood the entire book completely from references to themes..
I first read The Giver in fourth or fifth grade. Actually our teacher read it to us and it was AWESOME!!!! I read it again in middle school and it was still awesome!!!!
First time I read it I was 9, and it stayed my favourite book for years to come. Since then I've probably read it another 7 or times.
I read The Giver in my 30's and it is my favorite children's book. I did not care for Son as it did not seem to fit with The Giver and came much later than the publish date of The Giver. I liked Messenger and Gathering Blue, but to me, The Giver is more of an independent stand alone book. I had my son read it for the 1st time and he just started 6th grade. He says it is now his favorite book!
I first read it in 7th or 8th grade so I was about 12 or 13. I remember being upset with the ending and just recently found out there are more in the series so I think I'm going to reread this one and then read the rest.
I read this to my sons when they were in elementary and middle school. I was in my early 30's then. I loved this book! I gave it 5 stars. It was best as a stand alone.
I read it last week in two days because my 15 year old niece had read it and wanted me to see the movie with her. I'm 53. I thought the book was great. I didn't agree with some of the changes that the movie made, but of course, I rarely think that the movie is better than the book!
13also the rest of the series has nothing to do with jonas......its because its a quartet not really a series as such
i first read it last month. because of the movie. i enjoyed the story but felt it was over to quickly. i also didnt know it was a series.oh...i am 29
