Remember these are spoilery discussions - so stay away unless you've finished this section! Also, please keep spoilers to the things we know in this section of the book.

What are your thoughts on this section of The Shadow Rising?

Need a reminder? Here are the chapter summaries.

Favorite parts: I loved running into the Tinker's again after learning about their past in Rhuidean in the last section. As I've mentioned, this whole Two Rivers story line is one of my favorites, so I love all of the Perrin chapters!

Happy reading!

Do you think their deaths were required to develop Perrin's character?

Also... the people who put on JordanCon every year have put in a lot of time in showing what the actual characters would look like. I found a great photo of a guy dressed as Rand, with a Maiden of the Spear wearing Cadin'sor. It kind of demonstrates how effective the coloring could be at hiding in certain terrain.

I had never considered that. In reflection I do think the death of Perrin's family is what made him want so strongly to send Faile away.

I liked Geofram Bornhald. He never delighted in the hurting of innocents and completely sacrificed his own life to push back the Seanchan. I keep wanting to see Dayne live up to his father... but he is so consumed by mindless hate at this point. The Whitecloaks just represent the holier than thou people in the world. I hope that changes later in the books.

That's a great photo Donald! The cadin'sor blends into that wall SO well!

I suppose Perrin's family's death does contribute to character growth, and while I was sad for him when it happened, we as readers were never exposed to his relationship to them since he was living with the Luhann's at the beginning of the series. I think their deaths would have had more of an effect on me as a reader if we had seen more of them at some point.

Yes, I was definitely sad about Bornhald go. The Whitecloaks add an interesting element to the politics in this series with their own factions within them. I'm sure this has been discussed elsewhere in the fandom, but they remind me of the Crusaders!

Scott Flicker | 107 comments I’m sort of curious how the whitecloaks are financed. I’m sure it would take a lot of cash to support a group that appears fairly large and spread all over the world
