Elizabeth (Alaska) This is the weekend our local Friends of the Library has their annual book sale. With Covid, they had to change plans and have been holding short 1-day sales the last couple of months. I forgot the last one on Paperbacks. Not sure what they might have offered, but I'm sure I missed some gem or two I shouldn't be having to live without.

Today was Thrillers. It's not really my genre, but I also know volunteers sometimes mis-categorize things and, besides, everything is $1 and it's my favorite charity. I managed to come home with "only" 7 books, mostly new-to-me authors - 4 noir (Ross Macdonald, 2 by Andrew Crumley and a Raymond Chandler) and 3 probably truly thrillers (Andrew Vachss, Martin Cruz Smith, David Mark).

Ed, in another of my groups, there was a notice that GR has turned off notifications for the present.

Here's the link to the announcement: notification announcement

I think not just phones, that it was poorly worded. It would appear they disabled the entire notification system.

Yes! I was sooo pleased to see a little red 1 at the top of my screen!

Elizabeth (Alaska) We're just past halfway. Are you just past halfway in your reading for the season?

I have Power of 9 well in hand, but enough hoped for titles left to me that I'll have to keep focused.

message 1811: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 4364 comments I am only about one-third through the tasks. I'm enjoying the books but I don't seem to be fitting in much reading time.

message 1812: by Valerie (last edited Oct 17, 2020 10:27AM) (new)

Valerie Brown | 3298 comments It depends how you look at it! ha, ha. If I just count uncompleted tasks, then the answer is yes it's going well.

However, I'm still making my way through Our Mutual Friend, which I am reading slowly partially to (slightly) experience it as a novel in instalments (as it was published) and because I am the host for this book as a quarterly read. So, I've been jumping around as I please while giving Dickens a rest, which is fun but doesn't always stick to the plan.

message 1813: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I hope you're enjoying the Dickens. I think it might be my favorite of his.

Valerie Brown | 3298 comments Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "I hope you're enjoying the Dickens. I think it might be my favorite of his."

Yes! I really am. In a way, it's a bit of a shame that I was overcome with the need to volunteer to host the quarterly read. I would just love to sit down with this book and take it in in big gulps. However, slow and steady is fun too.

I haven't read much Dickens because I let my dislike of Austin and Bronte(s) take over. I know they are earlier, but I keep lumping all those English authors (I know.... I shouldn't). I like so many of his contemporaries that I really should bite the bullet and read all of his novels.

message 1815: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I'm not a fan of Austen and the Brontes either (although I've been encouraged to try the lesser known The Tenant of Wildfell Hall).

message 1816: by Anika (new)

Anika | 2815 comments I had high hopes of a MegaFinish this season, but it's not quite working out that way...between the backyard disaster that still takes up a fair chunk of time (can't hear an audiobook over the chainsaw), being back at work which cuts into my reading time (I'm so sad that we don't have red eye flights anymore! They gave me so much time to read!), and trying to get four quilts (gifts) done before Christmas, I don't think a MegaFinish is in the cards for me. :-(
That being said, I've read some FANTASTIC books so far this season so it's not a total loss ;-)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments Is anyone else having issues trying to edit posts? If not, does anyone have any idea why I don't seem to be able to edit any of my own posts?

message 1818: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I am doing some post editing now, and am having no trouble. Other than the sitewide problem a month or so ago, the only time I've had trouble is when I've left a thread open overnight. Refreshing the page usually clears the problem. If that doesn't work for you, you can contact support either through the contact us link on the help page or email support at goodreads dot com.

Big Thanks!!!! to Elizabeth and Kate for thinking up or reviving the challenges. It means a lot to me.

Rosemary | 4364 comments I just want to say that I think it is despicable of Goodreads to block everybody including group moderators from opening a number of threads. People who have been members for many years and/or run popular groups like this one shouldn't be treated like spammers. You contribute so much to their website! I know they closed the feedback group because they don't want our feedback, but I sent a message through the contact form anyway to say what I thought. Is there anything else we can do?

message 1831: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Nov 19, 2020 07:22AM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Thank you, Rosemary. Goodreads has a terrible time with Spammers. While I don't like this solution, I can sympathize with the problem. They recently had a problem with a very active librarian who, for reasons I'm not privy to, lost librarian privileges. The member then went on a retaliatory binge. I think this was the GR solution to that never happening again.

I used to report bugs and the like to an email address. I preferred that method because I had a record of my correspondence. They've closed that email address as well. I suspect for the same reason from the same (now former) member.

Well, that's too bad. It's a PIA for you two.

I've noticed the spammers, hopefully this will help with that. However, it's disappointing that former librarian felt the need to put fat on the fire. I understand being angry and upset, but it's just never worth burning bridges (other than in your own head!).

I suppose if it becomes too onerous for you two, you can reach out within the group and we can brainstorm some type of solution.

message 1833: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Nov 19, 2020 08:39AM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) As I understand it, the limit to creating threads is 3 per hour. I don't think there is any limit to the number of posts. So that would only mean Kate having to stretch her postings over a period of time. Kate, with her own time constraints, would find this problematical. But as you have seen, we think there is a workaround. She will delete my placeholder posts. I don't know what this will do to your notifications.

message 1834: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5297 comments I did notice that nothing seems to have changed at SRC. The posts seem to be coming up as usual, so their mods might be able to help with a work around. Thanks so much for working on a fix!

message 1835: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Nov 19, 2020 08:49AM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) It isn't the posts that are a problem. It is the number of threads created, or so I understand it. Yesterday when I created the Season posts, I had to tick a box 'I am not a Robot' but today I did not. In any case, we'll continue to make things go more smoothly for Kate when it comes time to post the challenge.

message 1836: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 4364 comments They have replied that they do appreciate the need to whitelist group moderators :) although all they say is they have sent it to the program developers and "hopefully this can be implemented."

message 1837: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Yay! Thanks, Rosemary.

message 1838: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Karen Michelle - I took a moment to look at the time stamps at SRC where the mods had opened a thread. There was lots of time between threads being created, so of course they would not have run into this new policy.

message 1839: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5297 comments I didn’t mean to belittle the problem either, sorry. I just hope it isn’t too tough on you and Kate 🥰

message 1840: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) It's OK Karen. I haven't talked to Kate about how she actually goes about doing her posting. I know what I would do, and that would be to create the thread and posts in my secret group, checking the links. Then I could come here and create a thread and posts. If she does it that way, there are more threads created in a short amount of time than is apparent.

It's not a problem (for me) to create the threads ahead of time, so that she can make the posts.

I also found this very annoying having to post a new challenge but spreading it out over 3-4 hours to get all threads up.

Just a thought and may or may not help in any way... create a user that is shared between you & Kate (eg. RwS Mods) and then you can post, using this login, threads as placeholders sporadically throughout the day. And when Kate has the time, she just has to edit those, obviously using this same login.
