Ed, and all. Just a reminder that we have a list of all the Agatha Christie novels, and the list includes the Lexile when BPL has a YA shelving. What prompted this note is that Murder at the Vicarage has a YA690 note, so won't work for Ratings Game.

Ed wrote: "Thanks..I was just checking that and replaced it with Little House in the Big Woods which has a 930 Lexile...that seems screwy...but ok."Lexile looks only at sentence structure and vocabulary, not content or age appropriateness. Christie is pretty easy reading, which is why some of the Brooklyn schools are using her. I'm guessing - and it's just a guess - that they are using them for kids who are having trouble reading, but that they are absorbing reads (as we all know). This must be encouraging for those kids that they can read more adult books, and maybe buy into the idea that reading is not only fun but something they can do.
Ed, great photos! And I see from your Facebook that some time ago you did a summer programme at Magdalen College, which I walk past all the time when I go into the city. My mother worked there as the college archivist from the late 1980s until she retired, and I sometimes go to the chapel services :)

I have a hope that I will be returning to Ireland and the UK in the next few years...and I want to spend a day or two visiting Oxford again.... just to see how much I remember. I had a good time there...but we were such poor students...poor....in the sense that we had so little money.
I can tell you a little story about our Summer at Oxford.... four of us from San Diego were in the program and we decided to buy a keg of beer to host the rest of the students (from all over the globe) to celebrate the US Independence Day (July 4). We had forgotten to buy cups! duh. We just told everyone that it was an American tradition to bring your own cup...and everyone accepted that and dutifully went back to their rooms to retrieve a cup.
Ed wrote: "We just told everyone that it was an American tradition to bring your own cup...and everyone accepted that and dutifully went back to their rooms to retrieve a cup.."LOL - I can't believe you actually tried to get away with that!

I love your pictures of Vancouver, Ed! It looks like you had a really good time. We have been to Victoria more than Vancouver and it looks like it might be time to go back Vancouver way!
Karen Michele wrote: "I love your pictures of Vancouver, Ed! It looks like you had a really good time. Maybe there will be a next time.
Ed wrote: "Karen Michele wrote: "I love your pictures of Vancouver, Ed! It looks like you had a really good time. From here going to Victoria is easier. We can get a fast ferry from Seattle. I remember once when we went from Victoria to Vancouver and were unprepared for how long it would take. We usually do those trips separately. My daughter likes Vancouver better and driving directly there is pretty easy, too, except for the border often takes forever. Both are great cities!

I was on an Alaskan cruise....and Victoria was the last stop...but we had been having such bad weather that we didn't get there until dusk. So, I had only about an hour of sunlight to explore. Need to see those gardens.

My daughter had her granddaughter over for her first sleepover Saturday night. First birthday coming up. Anyway, my daughter said how much Brielle loves books, that she points and turns the pages. As you can well imagine, this was almost the best Mother's Day story I could have had.
Ed, there are different editions of Arabian Nights. I'm not sure if the one you linked is an abridged edition or not. The MPE for that *does* have over 500 pages. There are multiple other editions in varying length, but Lexile has a high enough score that any of the editions are qualified. There is also this group of editions,The Arabian Nights, which appears to be more complete. I just mention it, because of the 1001 books challenge.

I just noticed that no where on the GR page does it indicate that it is Volume 1..... that is why you probably thought it was abridged.

I have both volumes in my possession...clearly labeled as such. Volume 1 has an ISBN OF 0-451-52542-6 and Volume 2 ISBN 0-451-52749-6 and that one IS in GR as Volume 2.

Reverted title and cover to original. I own this book. It is a single volume, not volume one of a series. Please double check ISBN numbers before making changes.
Volume II is identified as such. I can't undo another librarian's work.

Wow! I thought ISBN numbers were sacred like SSN numbers!
This is not to talk about politics but just the book. The Mueller Report is out now but I am so confused. I bought a copy but it is not THE Mueller Report. Apparently there is not one official Mueller Report? There are so many different editions. Some give the author as Robert Mueller, some give the Department of Justice, some give The Washington Post, some have analysis. I just want the official one without anyone’s commentary or explanation or opinion or analysis. Just the report. Does anyone know which one that is?
I just downloaded a pdf from one of the news outlets on the day it was released. Then I claimed the MPE for credit after checking that it was ok to do that.

LOL...I wish I was losing weight!!! Unfortunately...due to an overstock of fruits and veggies, I've been baking and cooking....a ton of banana pancakes, cornbread, banana bread, etc.
Karen Michele wrote: "I just downloaded a pdf from one of the news outlets on the day it was released. Then I claimed the MPE for credit after checking that it was ok to do that."I saw you gave it three stars. For being a dry document?
Guess what I got from my three children for mother’s day? I’ll give you a clue. My oldest daughter has a part time job at Books-a-Million and gets a discount. From her The Overstory
From my son The Perfect Horse: the Daring U.S. Mission to Rescue the Priceless Stallions Kidnapped by the Nazis
From my other daughter Where the Crawdads Sing
Hope I can fit them in next challenge. Maybe they will all fit in different ratings categories. It’s hard when they all get me a book. If I read one then they they want to know when I’m going to read “theirs”. And if I wait too long, they think I don’t like it or something. Siblings!
Yes, the three stars on the mueller report were because it’s a document, so although the writing was clear and complete it just felt like 3 stars. It is well worth reading for yourself and I was determined to do just that.

Your kids have good taste in books. I loved The Overstory and Where the Crawdads Sing. I haven't read your third book, but it sounds exciting.
Well, I didn't do as well in the Spring Challenge as I usually do. These three months have been unusually dramatic in Real Life, including the happy (my youngest daughter has graduated from college AND married her long term beau) and the sad (my mother's year long decline into dementia and poor health has ended). I went for comfort reads rather than challenge reads -- although I did read 2 slim volumes of Mary Oliver's poetry (and I UNDERSTOOD it! Yeah!)
Rebekah wrote: "This is not to talk about politics but just the book. The Mueller Report is out now but I am so confused. I bought a copy but it is not THE Mueller Report. The Washington Post's version includes additional official documents related to the report, a glossary explaining legal terms for the non-lawyers reading the report, and their analysis of various topics related to the report. The analysis is in a completely different section and very skip-able. The report itself has big chunks blacked out, which makes it entertaining to guess what is under the black marks (or so my son tells me).
I'm sorry about the loss of your mother, Deedee. You're so right that Mary Oliver's poems help us understand the circle of life with its joyful and sad times.Congratulations to your daughter on her graduation and marriage.
Deedee, comfort reads were exactly the right thing for such an emotional few months. I'm sorry for your loss.

Thanks Connie and Tien
I’ve already put them into my plan for the sub challenge next season to make sure they are all three read in the same time frame. My oldest did guide the twins on which books to get. She was in high school when I started my quest to read all the Pulitzers (for fiction) so she had planned to get me the winner. The other two were based on reviews. My son and I share a love of history and I love horses so I’m sure that’s why Carson picked that book

It really hit me harder than I thought when my mother passed, knowing she was very ill, I still wasn’t really prepared for it. It must have been very difficult for you with her dementia and caring for her. Just be real good to yourself now. Comfort reads are great especially with milk and cookies or a slice of chocolate cake to keep the dementors away.
And congratulations on your daughter’s graduation and marriage! Lot of planning in those two happy events! Which subject did your daughter take her degree in?
DeeDee, I am so very sorry for the loss of your mother. May you find comfort in good memories. And, congratulations on all the happy events - graduation and marriage.
What a rollercoaster life has been for you these past months! Please be good to yourself and allow yourself the time and space you need to process all that has been.

I read Fair Game: My Life as a Spy, My Betrayal by the White House by Valerie Plame Wilson and it had a lot redacted which really seemed unnecessary since much of it was already leaked when she was outed as a spy. Sometimes it seemed the censored words might have been as simple as “I went to my car” or something like that.
Karen, Please let us know when you cook that Wolf dinner. I believe we would all like a review on it.
