ABANDONED. shadow protectors, ice, and Rin?

I read a book in elementary school that I really want to read again, I just can't remember the title. I remember the mc was Rin, I think female but unsure. S/he got th a certain age where they get their own shadow. So they go in this shadow realm thing and captured a shadow monster buddy thing. Then I remember another sort of tribe or people or something who lived in darkness and were like Eskimos sort of. They didn't have shadows, and didn't like people who did. Rin somehow gets to them and travels with them, maybe trying to get back home? That's all I remember.
