Adam has hurt Meredith by distancing himself from her since their one sexual encounter. He did this at the urging of his AA sponsor, John Kasper who was working with the killer. Why did they make this a priority or even an issue?

The killer hates both Adam and Meredith, doesn't he? Kasper would do as told, and he had enough knowledge and influence to steer Adam to clean up his sobriety to suit the bad guys' needs.

Wyatt was just evil. There was no reason to do this. Shame on Kasper. He didn’t have to go that far.

I think Wyatt was doing everything he could to isolate Adam and muck up his sobriety. I know AA doesn't recommend starting a relationship, but Meredith could have helped, not hindered, his progress.

A good sponsor would have seen that Adam was suffering because of his distancing from Meredith and changed things. He/she would have seen that she could help.
