The protaganist has no name but is bullied for being ugly. Later has a talent for calming down the flying animals that drive the aircrafts. Escapes as a stowaway on an aircraft and meets a redhaired man with a treasure map. He saves the main character when ‘he’ is revealed to be a girl. They follow the map up a river and are unable to open the gate.
The girl climbs up stairs every day to play a game of chess which ultimately lead to the gate being unlocked. I beleive the redhaired man was injured or something and couldn’t go up the stairs. Anyways they find the treasure and bring some back with them to the redhaired man’s home. I think they name the girl something like ‘Ellie’. The treasure belongs to the king so they have to go and report it to him in the capitol. Ellie gets tricked by a wizard who tells her that he can heal her skin but it gets worse and she loses a lot of money. She somehow ends up living with a witch in the forest who restores her beauty to her and she arrives in the capitol as a mysterious lady.
A bunch of royal intrigue happens and then she gets some kind of honorary title for bringing news of this treasure to the king. I believe the red haired man is betrayed by some of the boys he hires to go with him to loot some of the treasure before reporting it and he’s believed to be dead for a while. There is a love interest that I can’t really remember but there is something about a city to the south that is ruled by an evil dragon or something and he had to run away from his kingdom? And there’s a girl in the mountain with goats and she’s always shrouded in a bunch of cloth. I believe the second book in the series focuses on the girl with the goats and her story. ‘Ellie’ gets another name by the end of the book, I think it starts with a ‘g’ or something like that. She decides to go back to that forest city to find out more about her origins. I think it was possible she was a kind of princess or something???
