I just had a flashback to a book I read maybe 2 years ago, though I remember absolutely nothing about it except there was a guy who at some point took over a position as the 'watcher, seeker, archivist' (some specific title I can't remember) in the woods full of tortured souls.... and there's a girl... I think it's dual POV.

Sabaa Tahir's An Ember in the Ashes series?

The first book has a male and a female narrator and in the description for the third book we are told "in the land between the living and the dead, Elias Veturius has given up his freedom to serve as Soul Catcher. But in doing so, he has vowed himself to an ancient power that will stop at nothing to ensure Elias's devotion–even at the cost of his humanity." I'm guessing that he might have taken on the role in book 2, published in 2016
