Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments Celaena actually kills the mercenaries in this novella. Why did she kill them, but not Rolfe's men in Skull Bay?

Melissa (melissasd) | 194 comments Celaena had quite a bit of pent up rage after what happened between her and Arobynn in Rifthold. She was itching for a fight and I think that seeing the 4 of them team up on Yrene made her snap. They were foul men who she felt deserved it.

I agree abut her rage and the mercenaries being foul, but were they more foul than Rolfe who was trading in human beings? I have a hard time reconciling Celaena's actions here and in the first novella where she spared Rolfe and his men.

Melissa (melissasd) | 194 comments You have a point, Lauren. They really were just as foul as Rolfe and his men.

Lieke | 83 comments But she didn’t have that rage in that first story, so I think that made a difference in her actions.

She continued to need Rolfe’s men (help navigate out of there) and to have killed them in what was supposed to be a barroom brawl would have aroused suspicions. She had no problem killing those who were after Sam. Killing Rolfe, a powerful man, would have maybe gotten her killed by Arobynn.

She killed the mercenaries here because they not only deserved it but because there would be no repercussions.

That's a very good point, Jonetta

Christina T (crysteena73) | 180 comments I never really thought about the differences between her actions here and from the first. Probably because I see her character as a child no matter how skilled. She does what she wants without thinking about the repercussions. She didn't feel like killing Rolfe and his men in the first one but this one she had rage from her punishment and temporary banishment. So since she can't kill the person she is most mad at she found surrogates. Also, she might have known what kind of men they were.....one escaped and brought help. If she would have just incapacitated them they would have come back harder and meaner.
