I read a book several years ago (2010ish) which was about a group of survivors that were living after a vampire or zombie apocalypse...I can't remember which. The children were kept secluded from the adults (in a school building I think) and on their 18th birthday were sent to live with their families and told the truth about the zombies/vampires. I also recall that one of the characters couldn't see very well and was in desperate need of glasses.

Justin Cronin's The Passage is a 2010 Book about a vampire apocalypse. One character, Elton, is blind and some children do live in a sanctuary/school where they are kept ignorant about the vampires until they are old enough to cope with the reality - and their parents only visit for a little while at bedtimes.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6...
